[IC] - CU70 (Concept Stage)
« on: Fri, 14 May 2021, 06:46:25 »

Hi Everyone!

Over the past few month we have been exploring different keyboard layouts and we believe that the one above is the most unique.

The CU70 builds on the CU65 and features multiple layouts on the same hotswap PCB but also features 6 keys and a macro pad on the left.

We are looking at different plate mounting systems and would love to hear your thoughts on what you would prefer.

In addition to this we would love to hear your thoughts on colours etc.

The dial will be that same as the one on the CU1 and CU7!

Dial on the left is great! Top mount seemed the easiest to achieve but gasket would be lit

Obviously everyone and their mother will recommend gasket mount but honestly top mount would be nice too, and obviously easier to engineer

Top mount would be great. I think the rounded look on the left side is a bit too much considering the knob size. An interesting idea would be offering also an option without a knob at all and just have 2 macro columns. Also it would be great for the bottom row to support 7u spacebar.

Looks good!
Some bigger bezels would be nice; they look quite thin as they are now.
I like the asymmetry with the round corner where the knob is.
Also, when I first looked at this board it whispered top mount to me.

I'm still very new to the hobby so I don't have much of an opinion on mounting options . But i'd love to see more colours+ knob combinations as well as a discord server to keep up with the project

How about symmetric (equally thick) bezels?
Top mount or gasket if affordable

Colors: bright yellow, dark green, gunmetal

I like almost everything about this. However, I agree that making the bezels uniform width (the width of the upper bezel and blocker) might improve the look. Maybe something to try with a render.

Do you have any idea what ballpark the price would be for the current concept?

Really really love this! Simple in design but different enough to stand out with the left knob and the rounded top left edge.

Glad to hear it will be hot-swappable. Will this have QMK/VIA support?

I'm hoping the pricing will be similar to your other boards too. $150-$175 is my price range before accessories.

As for colors, I feel like white is always a great choice - Basically all keycap sets looks great with a white board, I think.

Any thoughts on adding RGB? I always like the option to have it. I'm not sure how much this would impact the price though.

Color suggestions!
  • Olive anodized.
  • Orange anodized.
  • Robin's Egg Blue cerakote.
  • Polycarbonate  ;D
Although the easy ones are always going to be white, black, and grey.

that bezel honestly looks a bit small to fit top mount  '
i suggest at least making top and bottom bezel uniform .  you don't need to make all sides, just top and bottom, because right now it looks weird with asymmetrical bezels  ~
and you will want to chamfer the part next to the knob so it's the same as the other sides

Other than that, I think it will look quite cool once finalized.
Colors: silver and black  should be good for almost everyone,  you can add a special color if you really want.

I would like a top mount or sandwich mount.
It feels like everybody is doing Gasket Mount nowadays and it became more of a marketing term.
I like the rigidity and consistency of the other styles way better and it's kind of the thing we tried to achieve with all those brass plates.
(No offence - it's preference ;D )

Gasket of coarse, but also take a look at tadpole mount.

I actually really love the shape of this! It is definitely unique, and the dial/macropad combo will always sell it for me. I just agree with the other commenters on evening out the bezel on the top and bottom of the board. I don’t have a gasket mount keyboard yet so I do want to try one, but top mounted would be my next choice.
