Forgive me for not having a big enough Nerd Card here, but what franchise/film/game is this inspired by other than Commander Keen for the Galactic Alpha keys?

Not too big on the colors, but I'm going to get a couple things anyway just because of the work you put in on this. I mean from the theme to the renders, this whole project is just very well put together. Good job bro

[Oooh, a mono kit with alpas the same as the mods.  That actually be badass.

I thought Drac had an alt set worth of material (Err base?) too. Same feeling here.

I typically don't post and I made this account for the sole purpose of this feedback, I just really dislike that modifier text color.... it clashes with the kit itself and with the membrane kit which looks amazing and should've had a few more for the bottom row for support reasons.

Makes it a hard pass from me. If those 2 things weren't an issue it would've been an instant buy. Just my thoughts tho. I like the design direction of the kit and wish you the best (8

Nobody can beat your renders, as always.

Sadly, it's a bit too warm for my taste. Might be in for Membrane.

Any RAMA caps planned?

I may or may not be able to afford this when it gets released, but I have to compliment the promotional material's aesthetic and the effort that went into it. Great stuff.
Alice bars in base kit should be the rule, not an exception.

I didn't like the look of the translucent keycaps at all when I saw them on GMK Laser, but here they work really well as it actually looks like they're infested as you've stated! I got the impression that maybe the whole theme was built around this idea?

The medium does not allow a whole lot of room for creativity, but that's actually a really cool detail that goes beyond the normal color picking.

And big thumbs up for the top notch presentation again!

Others have pointed it already, but I'd also like voice my thoughts on this because I'm very concerned that people are getting themselves into something not knowing what they should properly be expecting.

I really, really, REALLY suggest you make the disclaimers around the Membrane kit more prominent. While I like the idea of the Membrane kit a lot, if the execution ends up going anything like it did when MiTo tried it for Laserwave, there is going to be a lot of backlash. IMO it would be dishonest and unethical not to warn people about how the Membrane kit may potentially come out. MiTo significantly overpromised and underdelivered and Drop was at significant fault for not providing sufficient disclaimers on the product. There are even fewer disclaimers on this than there were on Laserwave, which I find extremely concerning.

The transparent Laserwave caps had a slew of problems with their production, namely that the plastic was fused in a way customers did not expect nor were given proper expectation for.  MiTo and Drop provided insufficient warning as well as zero expectation of how it would differ from renders outside of a few cherry-picked samples. The image below displays the fusing really well:

270440-0

Unless you can promise in writing that the Membrane kit will not have these same issues, you MUST put a more substantial disclaimer in this thread and on the group buy pages than just a single tiny blurb in the corner of a single image that just says "the visible inner structure of the keycaps may differ slightly in the final product." Nowhere else in the entire group buy or description is this mentioned outside of comments in this thread from other people that personally experienced what happened with Laserwave.

270442-1

This disclaimer insufficiently describes the gravity of the sort of discrepancy that is likely to occur in the final production, and still needs to be significantly more visible. I am positive there are a significant number of people that are going to join this group buy (a) not seeing the disclaimer due do how small and unprominent it is (i had to blow up the image 2x times to be able to read it) and (b) not knowing the history of the design when it was attempted with Laserwave. They are going to be extremely disappointed and are going to blame you for the problem.

I strongly suggest adding more sufficient disclaimers about how the membrane kit may come out (potentially including references to Laserwave). It would be extremely dishonest and unkind to do what MiTo did, which was basically just say "lol you idiots didn't read, not my fault" when the disclaimers were totally insufficient and samples were cherry-picked to only show really good examples that were unrepresentative of the actual product upon production.

I'm sure many people will be happy with them even if they come out like Laserwave did, but there are also many people that won't. You lose nothing providing better disclaimers. IMO leaving things as is would be poor practice and an insult to the community.

We have all the history necessary to avoid these mistakes, please don't repeat them.

Others have pointed it already, but I'd also like voice my thoughts on this because I'm very concerned that people are getting themselves into something not knowing what they should properly be expecting.

although I agree with what you said regarding the keys and how the membrane will look in real life, how you described the laserwave situation is not fully accurate. the problem there is because like you I thought the keys were delivered damaged, when it wasnt the case. they really look molten like that. Before the group buy mito wrote a blog post in his website (which I missed) explaining the idea and showing some samples:

https://mitormk.com/2017/12/22/lets-make-things-clear/

physical samples of the keys were shown pre GB (how common is that) and during GB on the drop page. if i recall correctly they didn't have samples of the WASD, just the sun logo, so the samples werent cherry picked, they showed what they realistically had to show. I participated in the GB as well cause I enjoyed the concept. he replied to me (https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-x-mito-laserwave-gmk-translucent-keycaps/talk/2115672) and although I was disappointed he did not seemed dishonest or unkind everyone was addressed and massdrop allowed who wasn't happy to refund which I did not end up doing. I also found this post GB reply where the situation is explained a bit more in depth. at the time there is nothing else they could of done to make things different, it was a new concept

https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-x-mito-laserwave-gmk-translucent-keycaps/talk/2113745

also found someone who made a review, in retrospect I also felt like this for laserwave and will feel like this for membrane

https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-x-mito-laserwave-gmk-translucent-keycaps/reviews/2115930

what happens is that they sold us the laserwave kits showing samples they had + computer renders (which  are perfect), we thought the WASD keys would like like the renders and of course that did not happen. the situation itself was handled well at the time and I did not refund my kit. having actual pictures of the exact kits being shown, none of the bad reviews would of happened, but then again these things are never sold with final sample pictures

I agree with you, a disclaimer should be more evident here for the membrane kit. way more evident as the keys will not look like the images. at least we should be thankful for laserwave starting this concept and show us how it will look, these keys can look cool (i think it was the first time for laserwave). I will be getting Membrane, one of the feel sets where a kit like like this makes sense, but a more evident WARNING is required.

I don't disagree. The problem was that much of the information pertaining to the Laserwave caps were never given to people until after the group buy ended via Drop's discussion threads (Drop never sent a single communication about anything related to the group buy) and people weren't given the option to refund until after a bunch of people complained rather than saying up front and even then Drop still denied a lot of refunds. Additionally, and I can't speak to the validity of this as I wasn't present in the server, so this is hearsay, but I remember people mentioning MiTo being less than constructive in his Discord server when people brought it up and that his collected response on Drop was post-mortem damage control.

With regard to not having WASD samples, personally I'd consider that cherry picking. The sun design will inherently look the best because most of the underlying grid is covered and more of the legend is peaking through compared to the other caps. This was a new process and MiTo made it clear in his blog post that he knew it was experimental and prone to variation, and yet it didn't dawn on him that maybe he should get a full kit sample to ensure consistency? The whole thing was literally 8 keys (5 if you exclude functionally identical keys), getting more samples shouldn't have been that hard or expensive. If it's a new process, he should have been aware that there could be significant discrepancies and that a sample of only one of the molds would not be enough to validate the quality of the product as a whole, let alone be sufficient to show the customers how it would come out. MiTo is smart enough to realize this. Everyone was expecting that all of the caps in the kit would be comparable to the samples shown by MiTo and he should have known that's how it would be interpreted. IMO the job of a designer is not just to design a product, but to set proper expectations for its production and ensure they do not overpromise and that customers know what they are purchasing in full.

All that said, there's definitely a degree of bias here and I'm probably going harder on this than is reasonable. I'd just really like this not to be repeated, because it has all the hallmarks that it will.

My beef with MiTo and Drop aside (since it's tangential to the topic at hand), I agree there are people that like the fused look more and frankly I think the fused look will probably work better for Membrane, at least compared to Laserwave imo. My problem is that that having only one tiny disclaimer on an inherently unrepresentative render is less than insufficient; it feels like a cop-out. Even in the case of Laserwave they attempted a degree of damage control and most of the faults in the disclaimers came down to Drop's poor phrasing. This has even fewer disclaimers than Drop provided. It's begging to cause drama. This set only shows the renders of the Membrane kit with a pristine grid, which is just unrealistic and the designer should know better than to release such an unrealistic render with such a miniscule disclaimer. I'm not suggesting redoing the render with the fused grids, but at least provide a link to a thread about the Laserwave caps. I think it's unreasonable to expect anyone, especially with the influx of people new to the hobby, to already know the history of the design with Laserwave, so it shouldn't be left to the customer to dig through this thread to find it (especially given many people don't even look at GH threads). I doubt this is what the designer intends, but it feels like a cop-out so the vendors and/or designer can say "there's nothing wrong with it, you just didn't do your research" when people start complaining rather take a slight hit to purchased kits because people know how the product will actually come out. Imo it's poor practice and frankly unethical.

I really like this design, and I trust that the designer has the best of intentions, but from an image standpoint this isn't the sort of thing I think is acceptable to take lightly, especially given that there's already history for it. Again, I'm probably being overly-aggressive about this, but this problem is extremely easy to solve; a more prominent two/three-sentence disclaimer containing a link to information about when it was tried with Laserwave is probably enough. Expecting people to read between the lines or do their own research is not the play here. A product is being sold, it must be accurately described.

You guys are making a good point, not trying to mislead anyone here.

We are adding a more apparent disclaimer to the Membrane kit image as well as extended disclaimers on product pages. The extended disclaimer also includes a link to an album with various examples of caps previously made with this method to get a sense of what to expect.

Including just 4 additional keys in the Standard Galactic kit would have saved me $124.99 on an already expensive collection of kits necessary to outfit my Planck. That's too bad because I'd have bought the Sequence kit too for a Preonic.

Good luck reaching MOQ!

i dont disagree with what your saying about the transparent keys, but again, some of the information you are sharing about laserwave is just false and a bit exaggerate, likely because it was long time ago or because as you said yourself you have a beef with the guy and drop for some reason. you know that having full samples of a kit is unrealistic, GMK doesn't do that for anyone. there is nothing they could have done other than adding a WARNING in the RENDERS (cause the standard footnote is not enough, lets be honest). as a laserwave and regular drop customer I can attest that they did send an e-mail offering the option to cancel and refund to everyone, together with explanations, I remember vividly because I contemplated returning for a while. I was really thorn about the keys, but they grew on me. these keys are now my favorite tokens from the laser collection and I gave up on the refund. it is standard policy, they grant refunds no question and I feel protected buying there. the reason I mention this is because people dont seem to realize how good that is - it enables us to support risky ideas such laserwave (or in this case membrane), if all goes to **** we can at least get a refund instead of being handed a GMK necro pill that we have to swallow for good. this is why i dont buy the drop slander that people disseminate, although their communication shortcomings is a fact they at least allow returns if you dislike the set. lastly im in mito's discord for the weekly updates and giveaways, theres only mention of laserwave a couple times, I think the server didnt even exist at the time of laserwave. from what i witnessed he's always helpful when people have problems and legit questions so at least give them the benefit of the doubt for trying something new

that being said looks like omnitype has a written disclaimer on their regional page (maybe I missed it earlier) regarding the discrepancies of membrane that we expect. drop also state that final product may differ, and that didnt really help. if I could guess the other vendors will follow up and add the warning. but like you said, I have to repeat and make it clear they could improve it and have a VISUAL disclaimer on the render of the kit itself, something along the lines of WARNING THIS IS JUST A (VERY GOOD) RENDER, THE GRID ON THE KEYS WILL BE RANDOM AND WITH MOLTEN ASPECT, in bold and red. this way everyone is guaranteed to read it and accept it. I can imagine people being surprised for not reading the disclaimer once the keys finally come, and screaming with disappointment at pikku allu and omnitype later (like was done with mito, drop and the 9009 swirl keys). this can all be avoided, just my 2c

You guys are making a good point, not trying to mislead anyone here.

We are adding a more apparent disclaimer to the Membrane kit image as well as extended disclaimers on product pages. The extended disclaimer also includes a link to an album with various examples of caps previously made with this method to get a sense of what to expect.

that’s what I’m talking about, lets goooo

Forgive me for not having a big enough Nerd Card here, but what franchise/film/game is this inspired by other than Commander Keen for the Galactic Alpha keys?

Same here, when I saw Symbiote, I thought maybe it’s a take on Venom or maybe even Alien, but I’m scratching my head. Looks cool, but I wonder how complex it will be to execute well.

It's not based on anything specific, I wanted to create something original. Of course I've been inspired by a lot of different sci-fi media, but GMK Symbiote is not any single thing.

standard galactic is missing keys for a complete swap of alphas (without number row ofc). So you still end up with < > ?

also the only 1,75shift is in the basekit, just to force people into getting that

I noticed there's a R4 "lock" key in the Anomaly kit, maybe that might help in a pinch?
also I think SGA just replaces the letters, not the punctuation.  So you're left with < > ? but also ; " [ ]

It does look exactly like my wife's running shoes tho...

I'm super stoked for this set.  Dropped three hundo on it.  Plan to put it on my silver Xeno.  I suspect I'll have the caps before the board.

I really hope more sets utilise the membrane style keycaps in the future.

The concept here is really cool and I'm super into the idea of the standard galactic alphas but the mods being English text + icon kinda ruins that for me. I'd prefer fully icon mods as a way to lean into the theme and allow the galactic standard alphas to shine without requiring new molds.

Including just 4 additional keys in the Standard Galactic kit would have saved me $124.99 on an already expensive collection of kits necessary to outfit my Planck. That's too bad because I'd have bought the Sequence kit too for a Preonic.

I just want to echo this sentiment. I don't understand the decisions behind this.

The standard galactic kit is awesome and something I would never have expected to see in a GMK kit. But having those mod legends just breaks the theme for me.

As a non-standard layout user, buying that base kit would make no sense for me and novelties don't cover my needs.

I would have happily bought the alphas kit as a standalone so I could at least combine it with other mods or blanks. But here we are.

I can see your point of view, but it's not easy to consider the needs of every possible non-standard layout that only a small group of people use. The kits simply can't support every niche layout in order to keep the price affordable.

The thinking behind the Standard Galactic kit only including keys from A-Z is that it's designed to supplement the base kit and to include only the minimum amount of keys needed to keep the price low. The legends all require new molds as well which does affect the pricing of the kit. I'm am making a note of all this though and will be considering better support for non-standard layouts in the future for cases like this.
