Hey Topre lovers,
jchan94 here with a small proposition of a project I'm looking to run. It's not really a "IC", more like a "Yo. This is happening, just wanted to let you know".
Story
So I've recently acquired a RF/HHKB/NT, and I freaking love it. I'm not huge on keysets (as much as others....) personally, but I do like having options.
So I tried on /r/mm to find a few artisans for Topre, and low & behold... I found 2 keys from HKP for about $35 (expense). So being the person I am, I decided to drop a project or two that I was working on, and jump on this as soon as possible because this is something I'd love to make a reality.
What I want to do
We're looking to make Topre modifiers that are fully compatible with RF/HHKB.
Where I'm at now
So I've done a lot of legwork already because I like to know what I'm getting myself into and this is what I've done so far.
- Obtained all the keys necessary for the full mod pack.
- Talk pricing + the sampling work we need to do to ensure the product, and the process we need to take.
- Establish contact with 3 factories in China that can make the mold + PBT injection molding
What I need to do
- Remake Topre Keycaps into 3D files
- Adjust the thickness and walls of the keycaps to be thicker, and not have that "cross bar" in the stem side.
- Verify the integrity of the multiple keycap files
- Make ABS CNC'd samples of the keycaps to insure we have a good model before making a mold.
- Distribute CNC sample to a few people who know their Topre
- Pay for the mold to make initial production sample
- Distribute samples to more people who know their Topre
- Run GB for initial Purchase (limited sets for R1)
- Then GB things later
Pricing
The most important thing of all is pricing. After the factory specifications I gave them, it was determined that the full price of the mod set that is 100% compatible with HHKB & RF, would be $50.
Our MoQ is 100 sets per color, made of PBT.
4 colors have been chosen for R1: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Purple. We'll finalize the actual colors based on pantone soon.

Some Answers 2 your Questions
The Most Important Part
Quality will always be the top priority of this project. With all the sampling/people I've reached out to, I think that this project will go really well. The approval of the community members I've talked with about this project is vastly important to me, and important to the success of this project.
What factory is this being made at?
I have 3 lined up that have done work for: Hitachi, Asus, Hamilton Beach & Masterlock
Is it really $50 for HHKB/RF compatibility?
Yes
Spacebar?
Nope. I believe that we have to respect each other's projects in the community and that Matt3o is entitled to everything that the Topre Spacebar project was, is, and will be.
What about Alphas?
We have to finish this one first, but later it will happen. a WASD + ESC pack is highly probable, or even just an ARROW pack :).
What will the keys be made of?
Single Shot PBT with at least 1.3mm walls
What about double shot?
That will run the mold cost up by about 3-4 times.
Will Dye Sub legends be an option in the future?
Yes, but the current project is just PBT blanks.
We already established contact with a dye sub factory that can do PBT, but QC/QA is a huge thing we have to tackle for non-fuzz legends.
Can I get a sample set?
A sample set costs $600 to produce (this is the cost for one off samples with the mold), so if you want to swallow that and have the possibility of "bad keys", fine by me.
Who's gonna help you QC this stuff?
I've already reached out to Topre lovers & fanatics about this.
And I've reached out to someone who is very good at making prototypes/3D things to give me a hand.

I'd say you shouldn't attempt to thicken the walls (or at the very least get non-thickened samples), as it'll likely make the keycaps feel noticeably more weighted than the stock ones that they're paired with.
That is very true, but if we attempt to make all the Alphas as well, it'd be great to have some thicker keycaps.
But maybe we can just start with making replicas, then later adjusting it to make a full set.

with the 100 moq per color requirement, you'll probably want to branch out and advertise to the country-specific communities (like enjoyclick, kbdmania, etc). yellow/magenta/purple (and cyan to an extent) are all pretty polarizing colors, so just getting 100 from GH/MK/DT alone might be challenging.
Most definitely! We will work with international communities to reach the moqs and hopefully get more colors.
Feedback shows that we will need to add red, blue, and green! Hopefully this works out.

Interested. I would also echo the previous caveats about thickness. Something I have admired about Topre keycaps for RF and HHKB is the way that the caps form an integrated functional unit with the Topre switches. It would be important to ensure that changing the thickness would not be detrimental to this functional integration.
Of course, if we adjusted the thickness, it wouldn't change the function of the cap with the profile of the stock caps.
However, we chose to stick to oem!

I'm still in for at least 2 sets and with the option to purchase some singles (additional 2.25u left shift, and R1 1u) I should be able to get this to work on 660C's.

I'm interested. PBT mods and at a good reasonable price of $50! Hot Keys is running a GB now but I'm guessing his is more hand made vs factory made. I hope the colours made by Joseph will be different so we all have many choices!

The only issue I foresee is not enough injection points and that the PBT will cool too quickly. Is it just that single injection point in the center?

We don't have all the 1U's for each row :(
Other than that, we are held back 2 days due to some adjustments to the mold. We had a thickness issue with one of the caps so we have to make an adjustment. Also, all the caps are going to be polished + have a finished bottom that is nice and smooth. The texture should be identical to all existing topre mods.

Of course. Our 1st sample comes in soon.
Then we confirm the structure and quality of plastic.
After that, the factory will texturize it it.
Confirm again (send out samples to people).
then hit production if all goods. Should take 3 weeks or so for this process.

Here's a photo. Some issues:
1) Bottom left Ctrl had issues with the stem (it was 90* tho)
2) Some other stems had issues with keeping straight (noticable on right side)
3) Some sink marks are noticeable (ribs).
We're addressing these issues and we'll have it finalized within a week or two.

The molding takes time and updating the mold is annoying but of course, necessary in order to make this the right way.

To support it you need at least one more R4 1u and 3 1.25u (a shape that isn't currently in the mold). That would still leave you with a mismatched numpad. You'd need the two different numpad 2u (new molds) keys and 4 more R1 1u keys to even it out. That's 10 more keys (with 3 new key types) in total to support the 980c. Now, you could argue that Realforce fans would benifit from the four extra R1 1u keys for their function row, but if you want that 'complete' look on the 980c it would clock in at 14 keys total. The fact that there isn't a set of keys for the Function row in the current mold makes me think that chances are extremely slim of getting any more keys added for the 980c :)

My guess is that they're both busy with their own projects and collaboration and this project is not really their priority.
Jchan's busy at the XDA keycap set, the new GMK muted keycap set, and many other products on his web store.
Rama has his aluminum case projects, and is getting deeper into the Artisan scene - which sells at lower volume but of much higher profit margin.
I hope this set has the TMX cap stems - and hope they can also fit the Novatouch MX compatible stems.
Hope they understand that this set can be manufactured in mass volume and does not require as much labor intensive key-by-key work.

Based on the sample photos, and info from jchan, it seems that Rama allowed a couple of his designs (wave, X, and O) caps to be included in the set. Not sure about him making them available separately though.

The Topre set area is so barren right now, everything kbdfans puts out for alphas look like garbage except for the blank modifiers.
