Staryu (An Open-source 5-key Keypad)

I designed this 5-key keypad just for fun and now I'm glad to share it with all who are interested.
I published the sources of Staryu here: https://github.com/kairyu/staryu

All keys--though 5 keys--on Staryu are programmable. The firmware is based on the famous "TMK keyboard firmware", and the default keymap and fn settings are like the following.

User can customize its own keymap by using TKG and tkg-toolkit which are made by me too.

Actually I have no Staryu on my hand yet. Here are some photos by other users.


Prototype PCB of v1.2 and v1.3 (The manufacturer made a mistake so some silk on bottom side of v1.3 was missed)


Assembled with a simple clear acrylic bending case.


Someone also made a simple anodized aluminium case for Staryu.


You may have noticed that there is a RGB LED in the top-left corner of Staryu.


And off course Staryu has full backlight and several light effects.

That makes a nice nav cluster complement to a 60% in that layout.

Wow that's very cool Ryu, perhaps a possible mini GB in the future? I like the idea of a separated arrows keys, the function button is nice to add a lot more functionality. :thumb:

Are both cases carbon fiber or the one with the symbol aluminum?

Since Staryu is completely open source (pcb, firmware, software and also the case), anyone can make a GB of it.
Regarding the cases, I'm getting the permission from gen.s and the carbon fiber case will appear on the repo later.

Can I evolve this thing with stone and if so does it gain 5 more buttons?

Glad to hear that a group buy will be possible? I'm definitely interested and may even be able to run a small GB if necessary.

Actually I reserved the codename Starmie for an evolved RGB version of Staryu.
P.S. Ryu played the POKé FLUTE.

PCB only: 10 pcs less than $50 USD (<$5 each)

PCB with components pre-soldered: 10 pcs less than $400 USD (<$40 each)
I think larger volume will reduce the cost further, however, the shipping cost ($15 [asia] - $30 [europe]) may be higher than the PCB itself.

I might end up order a small batch and hand-solder the SMDs, though I am not sure about my SMD soldering ability....

i just bought one of these on taobao. Hope I don't **** it.

My tkl isn't programmable at all and doesn't have media keys on the fn layer. Hopefully this little guy will fit the bill =D
