Hey,
I've been working on this project for a little bit, since I got a $27 G80-18xx on ebay as have a few other community members.
The PCB is almost done on KiCad, I just need to finish up the traces. It'll fit the G80-1800 case for sure, because I printed it out 1:1 and laid it over the original PCB to check the mount holes.
Layout:

Features:
1. QMK firmware -if anyone has experience with bootmapper client maybe that too
2. atmega32u4 support (V2 will hopefully have atxmega32a4u once I can figure out how to port it to QMK, or start on my own firmware)
3. No in-switch LED (I'll add the in-switch indicators though, I think)
4. Common layouts (above)
5. Both a mini USB port and pads to hand-solder a cable to the PCB
6. Hybrid diode footprint, allowing either through hole or SMD microMELF diodes.
A few things I'd need:
1. confirm that the G81 case has the same mounts as the G80
2. Dolch PAC indicator LED positions
3. probably something else.
I have ~10 people who've expressed interest in helping cover prototyping costs in exchange for a working PCB. Once I have the PCB finalized I can get pricing to them and get the first prototypes going. I'll be doing the SMD soldering, at least for the prototypes.

Split it on two different rows. You can make half of the backspace as a F13, since you have room on that row. I use this trick and it works.

Hey, quick update
Someone (pwner) was gracious enough to send me a G81-1800 case, and it's the same as the G80-1800 case.
I ordered the proto PCBs, microcontrollers, and other stuff I need tonight. Should get to me in like, 2 weeks max?

If I remember correctly, the Leeku PCB fits G80 cases, so that might mean this pcb would fit a tx1800 case. I can try it out once I get mine if we don't have an answer before then.
Is this the appropriate thread to ask about case options? I'm wondering what colours and finished will be available and info on MOQs for colours.

There’s two small issues I’ve found:
- The mount holes are slightly too large, this gives a tiny bit of wobble (up-down movement) to the board. I’ll fix this on the “1.0” version by switching to ¼” holes from 6.3mm. I’m going to explore ways to mount it a bit more securely (tape, etc). Someone could also use 2 or 3 screws to screw the board into the G80/81 cases, since there’s a few holes for that. I’ll figure out what size those threads on the case are.
- I used a through hole footprint for the 6x6mm reset switch, instead of an SMD one.. I ordered SMD 6x6mm switches. I’ve already ordered through hole 6x6 switches from eBay, I should have those in 2ish weeks. Worst case they may delay me shipping the boards a small bit, but they’ll be super easy to solder on once I have em so I don’t see it being a big issue.

Consider adding a breakout for the USB so to solder a cable. Not everyone is fond on drilling holes into their rare Goupil cases.
EDIT: Looks like the USB breakout is above the F12 key.
BTW, you have two F2 and two F6 on your silkscreen.

Very interesting. Since the case of the g80-1800 isn't very solid, I think that many would be happy to purchase some sort of laser cut rubber mats pads. This mat will be placed inside the case to reduce the wobble of the pcb.
The PCB should be very thick, to make the typing experience more enjoyable.
Could the PCB include Holtite Sockets For Switches, to allow hot swapping, and installation of the switches without soldering?

Currently the PCB is the standard 1.6mm. I could look into doing a 2 or 2.4mm thick one, if it'd be desirable by the community, for future versions. Looks like the thicker they are the more expensive they are (duh), but I'd be cool with offering both a standard thickness and a thicker one for a little bit more (like $2-3 more)
A mat is a good idea. I learned that putting some heatshrink on the two large locators in the case helps with wobble a lot too.
I don't have Holtites and I don't think I'll personally supply them, but you should be able to put them in yourself if you'd want to.

Hey all. Another quick update, there’s good news and bad news.
Bad news first: I’m an idiot. I did not set up the switch matrix correctly in duplex and now every two switches are tied together. My mistake. As I’ll say below, I have to re-order the PCBs once I fix them, so everything will be delayed about a week. This isn’t horrible as I’m waiting for a few components to come in anyway (2.4k resistors, other small caps). I aim to get everything shipped out to you/the proxies the week before/after Christmas.
Good news: I decided to return the stuff I bought on black Friday for myself in order to order new PCBs at no cost to any of you. I’m going to fix the matrix design and adjust the small things that were wrong with the first batch then order the new ones ASAP. They will still have a black solder mask finish with white silkscreen. It will be a quick fix and I’ll triple check things again (along with passing the schematics to a few others once again) to ensure that everything will be fine.
Things I’m fixing/adding/changing:
• Switch matrix
• Small silkscreen issues (2x F2 and F6, and 10 instead of 0)
• SMD reset switch
• Bootloader flashing pins (thanks Lief!)
• Resizing the large mount holes to better fit the locating nubs
• Adjust the SMD/through hole combo diode footprint to have less pad exposed

Thanks! The footprints I use have a 1.5mm hole. Think that'd be too big, or would it still fit well? Mine are modified from The Keebrary which is pretty widely used.

My mistake, I misinterpreted what you were saying earlier about PCB thickness for the through-hole size. The tester PCB I received from another user only had 1.45mm, 1.4mm and 1.47mm holes (which probably got rounded to the nearest .05mm anyway) and I played it safe by picking 1.45mm.
There are holtites on my VE.A, Leeku 1800 (wish I saw this earlier), and custom PCB. Using my digital calipers, the final size of the holes on the Leeku and custom PCB are 1.51-1.53mm. On the VE.A, final size is closer to 1.45ish mm and the holtites were noticeably harder to press fit without lifting pads. The final size of the holes on my old ZZ96 PCB were right around 1.60mm (http://i.imgur.com/WCT2cKl.jpg) and holtites fell through. It might work, but with different tolerances between manufacturing houses I cannot say anything with full confidence so take this information as you will.
After writing this I have realized that I have done everything but answer your question. Hope this helped!

Seems like 1.5 should be good then. It's 1.4985 IIRC to be exact, which is only .0015mm difference so it doesn't really matter lol. But yeah I assume these should work well with holtites based on your measurements. I don't use them anyway, but someone might :p

Do you mean the Serial Peripheral Interface? That's not necessary unless you use ATMega32u4RC which comes without a bootloader but, as far as I know, they are not being produced anymore.

Yeah, for ISP/JTAG programming in case the bootloader gets corrupted or something. I'm using a regular 32u4-au so it'll come with one installed.

The standard plate that's been floating around does not require much cutting, and provides a pretty good solid reinforcement for the keyboard itself, it is possible to have three separate mini-plate, and thus require no modding at all to the G80 case, but I think that somewhat defeats the point of using a plate in the first place (reduce the 'cheapness' feel of the plastic G80 cases)

The difficult part will be fastening the plate to the case, i think. there's a few screw mounts in the top-middle of the case around 3/4 and backspace, but they won't provide super good support for areas far away from em.

A plate is held by the switches so no need to mount it, like many 60% keyboards.

Yeah that's the other option. Makes sense, I figure securing it to the actual case itself will provide more rigidity though.

Updated/fixed PCB protos have been ordered
Here's an IC form for the first run of "production" boards. These will hopefully run in a month or so, maybe Feb. Timeline depends on how things with the new controller go. Main purpose of this IC is to gauge interest in a thicker version (2.0mm instead of 1.6mm) for more stiffness and a black-on-red silk/mask Cartel Keyboards version, as opposed to the "standard" white-on-black.

Put one together and whipped up a quick firmware on kbfirmware.com... IT WORKS
I've noticed two of the indicator LED silkscreens are backwards, not a huge deal. And the solderable pads for a cable aren't labelled which I'll make a note of in the "user manual". I need to solder diodes and get the indicator LEDs in, but aside from me checking them it's fully working.

After looking at a few of the PCBs I don't recommend using ALLPCB for stuff like this. 4 of the 5 in the pack I opened were scratched to hell and back:

The original broken protos were done through EasyEDA, and have no scratches. I will likely be using them in the future.

Never tried ALLPCB myself but I can vouch for EasyEDA's quality.

I've used EasyEDA and PCBWay before - both have been solid. I'm somewhat partial to PCBWay because they can also do assembly, and the GB for these will feature boards fully assembled from the factory.

Mechboards has acted as a proxy for quite a few GBs recently, he is available on the MKUK Discord if you want to explore the option of having an EU based proxy for bulk shipment!

Nope, all protos are claimed atm. Hoping for a full run of these in the next month or two.

Shipped the European ones out last Thurs. Today I sent the rest of the international ones (two Aus, one Japan) and about half of the US ones. I'm going to get the rest of the US ones (all of the soldered diode ones) out this week.

Update on the Euro orders: My contact moved from Great Britain during the transit of the package to him. It was supposed to reach him by when he moved, but was held in customs. It was released with the condition he'd have to pick it up, in person. Since he's in the Netherlands now, he cannot do that, so they will be returned to me. I'll ship them out to the Europeans as soon as I can once I have them.

The LED's go on a separate PCB. So you just solder them into the standard 1800 LED holes.

Update on the Euro orders: My contact moved from Great Britain during the transit of the package to him. It was supposed to reach him by when he moved, but was held in customs. It was released with the condition he'd have to pick it up, in person. Since he's in the Netherlands now, he cannot do that, so they will be returned to me. STILL waiting for the EU prototypes to get here from the UK. I know they sent the package with their economy/slowest/cheapest service, but three weeks seems a little long to me. I'm hoping to receive them soon. As far as I'm aware everyone that isn't in the EU has received theirs, and those I've talked to seem to really enjoy being able to program their 1800 ;D
I've started working on "v2" of this project, incorporating more features like in-switch LEDs and a more efficient (size-wise) matrix. I'm thinking about adding RGB, but not sure if it'd be worth it just because I personally really don't care for it - if the demand is there, I can toss it on. The USB port location(s) are also being reworked to make it easier to integrate the PCB with a standard G80/1-1800 case. I have files ready to order a small Pro Micro-ish board to test with a handwire circuit first, then once I work out the kinks I'll get going on the legit board. I still plan to attempt a thicker-than-normal board (probably 2mm), but I'm concerned about stab mounting. I may have to ask some manufacturers about their cavitation abilities, because that'd be the best way to still be able to mount stabilizers.
I'm moving in a few weeks so progress may be a bit slow til after I'm settled. I've also recently switched over to Altium from KiCAD since my new job has some licenses available, so there's a little bit of a learning curve. So far the software has been super powerful and easy to get used to. Either way, I'm aiming to have the next round of these for gb/sale this summer. A super small run (like, 5) protos will probably be done first just for me to personally verify that everything works. Once that's done, I'll open the sale up for however many people would want. I'm aiming for a minimum of 25 of each variation (regular and thick) to make it viable on my end. Obviously the more the better, and I feel like there'd be a good demand for these.

Do keep us updated on this, I can't wait to use my TX1800 with a non-Leeku PCB.
Am also interested in whatever you have cooking up for v2, but please do keep the USB location (at least keep the pads there as an available option for the USB port because it allows people to use it with Kustoms like the TX1800)

Update on the six seperate European orders - the original rejected-by-customs package has returned to the US and arrived at my parents' house today. My girlfriend is coming to visit this weekend and is going to pick it up on her way and bring it out to me. Barring any delays, I should have each one sent out individually by the end of next week with no cost to the customer.
Update on the "big buy"/V2 - I decided to focus on a simple replacement FC980M as my first project within Altium, I should be ordering protos for that next week. I plan to order my "test boards" for the decoder-assisted matrices alongside those, and once I have one of those built/tested/verified working I'll work on the next iteration of the G80-1800 boards. I've also considered using the AT90USB1286 like others have used on the 1800-layout PCBs, but I'm really trying to avoid using a ~$8 USD MCU on these. I'm pretty confident that the decoder + ATMEGA32U4 will be plenty good enough.

I am assuming this will be a full PCB because the chip is on the main PCB. Will you also be making a new plates to accommodate new layouts?

The FC980M is a personal thing for now so I'll just be modding the existing plate. I'll have probably four extra PCBs from this project so I'd be willing to mod other people's plates too if they'd want to buy one.

With the new job and being between paychecks and crap I didnt realize both car payment and rent were due this paycycle, so I wont be able to ship the remaining Euro PCBs until next week (25th). They'll go out that day. I apologize for yet another small delay. :(

You can if you want, yes. Otherwise you can solder the cable right to the PCB and route it out of the original hole in the case.

I also ported QMK to it because I didn't want to use the GUI so I'll probably push that to QMK's github repo somewhere next week. Soldering everything was pretty easy but I'd have liked to use SMD diodes instead of through-hole ones.

Gonna be prototyping using a newer controller (either an stm3203 or atmega32u4+decoder) to add some io. Once that's done I'll continue/finish work on this. I'm hoping to get the controller stuff done in the next 2-3 weeks.

Interested to see how the 'production' version comes out.. as it seems that it was confirmed that it will with a g81 i will probably be looking to get at least one.
if given the choice between features and price, id go with cheaper controllers.. as for me the main appeal is being able to take an older board without a ton of use (a g81 my) and turning it into something that is pretty serviceable, with myself having no need for LEDs/much anything else beyond filling up the status lights that come standard on the 1800.

Just got my PCB (prototype rev2) in today. Where can I find the QMK source for that board?
Also, for soldering a connector to the board: Is the pitch 2.54 mm (JST XH) and are the pins in the same order as on the mini USB next to it?
