Title: [IC] budget96 PCB and Case - mmm, QMK?
Post by: donutcat on Fri, 19 January 2018, 16:05:30
GB is now open! GB thread at https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=95390.0

Update 4-20-18
Checked in with the manu on a hunch to ask about gold immersion finish, got confirmation back this morning that we'll be able to do gold immersion finish on both the colors of PCBs for no additional costs!

Update 4-5-18
Quotes received on the PCBs. Both Matte Black and Purple will be available for $30 at 50 MOQ each.

Update 3-27-18
Strawpoll tiebreaker for PCB color at https://www.strawpoll.me/15374972

Update 3-3-18
A new IC form is available for deciding on PCB color. The manu got back to me after Chinese New Year and confirmed that as long as we get over 50 orders we'll be able to select a custom soldermask color for the PCB.

Info is in the form but I'll post it here for ease. This is a simple IC for a budget 96key PCB offering, as well as the potential for a budget case option. The boards run on ps2avrgb firmware and use BootMapperClient for programming. They come with RGB underglow LEDs and diodes persoldered, as well as resistors for backlighting LEDs. The layouts support ISO, split backspace, 1800 numpad, and several bottom row options that I'll make up a diagram for soon. Additionally, the mounting points on the PCB appear to let it fit in a variety of cases, but this is not confirmed currently.
Sample pics:

(https://i.imgur.com/C5rqjqB.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/C5rqjqB.jpg)

My sample is red, but the PCBs will be black with silver.

For the case, this will most likely be an acrylic sandwich style case from a community maker, and will likely resemble the below sample:
(https://i.imgur.com/wqpz2fi.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/wqpz2fi.jpg)

PCB pricing is currently estimated at $35-$40 based on bulk shipment cost to me, case pricing is loosely estimated at $60 since I don't have numbers on that.

Lemme know what you think.

Need an option in the form for just 1 case! :P

But at that price point, I'm highly interested.

Any chance for a split spacebar option in the PCB/plate?

Well, the wording in the form options is meant to be more humorous than serious. Split spacebar is highly unlikely since I'm dealing with a preexisting design and the manu will most likely be unwilling to adjust their design.

For the case, will there be an option for different colors on each layer?

And I'd like to see hex screws instead of philips head.

Different colors may be available, but that would understandably increase the cost of the case. And yes, I'm aiming for allen head screws as well since they're very nice on my wkl case.

Cool. The only thing that would hold me back from this one is Bootmapper Client. I'd much prefer TMK/QMK support.

I'd also be down for split spacebar and acrylic colour choices but at that pice I'd probably buy one regardless.

I'd be in at that price point if the sandwich case could add an additional layer on top to act as a lip and make it more high profile

Title: Re: [IC] budget96 PCB and Case

Unfortunately the design of the PCB is set in stone currently with USB mini since I'm using a design that the manu already has available as opposed to making my own. This contributes largely to the budget nature of this project.

Currently working on communication with the manu, which is slightly hard than anticipated. The approach of CNY is also making me a bit nervous about the timeline since at this point the GB period would need to be longer than the week or so until CNY.

New IC form at https://donutcables.com/budget-96key-ic/ and https://goo.gl/forms/cUYFtUlWglLxsnE82

After no communication due to Chinese New Year, I've finally heard back from the manu that they will allow a custom soldermask color if we get at least 50 units ordered. Additionally, we may see bulk discounts that I wasn't certain of before, but that's also dependent on order quantity.

Some more progress, got some more sample boards in shipping and I've just ordered the first test batch of FR4 plates. I'm really hoping this batch works out since I'd like to show them off at the San Antonio meetup, and it'd be nice if the design worked well for the GB as well since that would further drop the price of the kit.

Can we get those SMD LEDs for caps and num to be a neutral color like white?

I'm currently testing FR4 plates to see if we can replace the more expensive and time consuming to cut acrylic plates with them. I chose to try them mostly for having a more durable plate material that can be thin for a snap in fit, but another benefit is that there will be some color options. We're still going to be going with matte/frosted middle layers if we can source them economically enough.

I've bought stuff from this manu before, it's good stuff.

Can we get those SMD LEDs for caps and num to be a neutral color like white?

I can check, but part of the reason the pricing is low is because we're not modifying their design any, so I'm not sure if that would mess with our current pricing or our potential lead time.

I wouldn't think doing white in the quantity you're talking about would be any issue

Got one put together to check for fitment. One thing we overlooked was that the FR4 plates wouldn't have countersunk screwholes like the acrylic tops would, so you'll notice they aren't the best fit. We'll be looking into resizing the holes or changing screw types before the GB run.

As it sits, the case is 11.4mm thick and weighs 404g.

If some of the last few buys I've seen are representative of anything people perfer getting colorful cases whenever a "big" keyset drops (Laser) and generally they get one that matches one of the main colors for that set. Otherwise they go for more muted options as they have a higher chance of matching something that comes out in the future.

This is for the color of the PCB itself, not the case. For the case I'll probably go with black or white as a neutral color, but I may open the choice for a additional color.

Makes sense. I like to plan for the future by anticipating a keyset that will eventually match my case. I don't want to own too many of the same color boards right now, while there are still so many to explore.

We're most likely doing FR4 plates, so we'll have to use what coppermask colors we have available. Note that these colors will be more restrictive than the colors for the PCB since it's through a different manu.

The main reason for moving from acrylic plates was due mostly to the durability of acrylic in relation to thickness needed for switches. Most newer switches are plate mount and really need to snap into the plate in this case setup to hold the PCB where it needs to stay, but 1.6mm acrylic is pretty weak while thicker acrylic keeps the switches from staying in place and leads to the issues I currently have with my rev1 proto. FR4 is much stronger at 1.6mm, gives strong snap in fit, and is cheaper to have plates made from, especially in bulk.

Good news lads, there's a lovely stack of PCBs on my desk right now
(https://i.imgur.com/mpwBIKx.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/mpwBIKx.jpg)

Haven't had a chance for advanced testing, but they seem to function correctly from simple testing, and there's even more good news with some adjustments to the design:

 - Numpad Enter and + switches have been oriented 90° to the others. They used the be the same as the others, causing the LED pads for those switches to be absurdly tiny and meaning that the switches there would not be able to click into the plates using our current plate and PCB mount stab compatibility. The rotation fixes both of these problems.

 - Indicator LEDs are white instead of green. This didn't me since I don't use the indicators, but someone had mentioned a ways upward that they would prefer something more neutral colored than green. Wish granted.

I'll be able to give these a proper rundown this weekend while I'm showing them off at the San Antonio meetup.

does it fit LSv2? :o

I myself don't know. The PCB should have the mounting points to fit the majority of cases available, but I'm not familiar with what's needed for everything.

Not usually a fan of sandwich cases, but the look of the green plate and the engraving mixed with the 96 layout just really works for me

Any chance of there being different color switch plates? Even black would be great.

Not a GB yet, just an IC.

Moving on, it looks like matte black pretty solidly won the current poll
(https://i.imgur.com/lmwqj08.png) (https://i.imgur.com/lmwqj08.png)

But I think I'll give you guys a shot at a tiebreaker since there wasn't much difference between the two numberwise. Once I figure out how I'll setup a poll here on the GH page and leave it for a few days to get a conclusive result.

In the meantime, I'll be working on ironing out the last few issues with the cases, mostly the screwhole situation, the stabholes being too snug, and looking into hipro case bits since someone suggested a pretty simple way to implement it. Also, I'll get some MOQ price points for some more options for colored plates for the case since people were interested.

The winner from this tiebreaker will determine the PCB color for this run. Potential future runs could have different colors.

Poor purple is trying so hard

I might propose a possible solution to this battle, the option for both purple and black PCBs. I haven't asked the manu about it, but I don't see any reason they wouldn't do two colors as long as the 50 moq for custom color is met for both of them. What would probably have to happen is I give the option for either color, but if one of them doesn't make it your order defaults to the one that does hit or has the higher numbers at that time. Considering the price point of the PCBs is quite nice, I don't see this being a problem, but I do have to worry about people dropping if their PCB choice doesn't make it. Lemme know what you guys think on the matter.

Sounds fair, I would be okay with staying in, if purple doesn't reach MOQ, and getting a black board. Just want purple because it looks better imo.

Agreed with BlindAssassin111. I just want a more fun PCB color for pictures taken while building it. It's not like I can see it once it's inside the case, as far as I can tell from the pictures you've posted.

It's visible with the rev2 protos since they're using clear middles, but I'm looking to move back to the frosted middles. The frosted is a more expensive material, but it does a much better job of diffusing the underglow lighting than the clear does.

Another poll for you guys https://www.strawpoll.me/15384352 this one is to gauge interest in a high profile addon option for the cases. This would be just an acrylic slice, same as the middle, that would sit on top of the plate to make the case hipro. Someone suggested it so I figure throw a poll up and see. The acrylic bits are the easiest parts of the project to modify since they're coming from JOlimon and don't have to meet an moq.

Interested in the hipro addon so long as it's optional during assembly. I can see myself using it with some keysets but not others.

Yeah, the hipro section would be an optional addon that may put the kit cost over $100 and would include the hardware for both lowpro and hipro configs.

In other news, I was checking over layout compatibility for the budget96 PCB and I thought you guys should know that it supports 1.25-1.5-1-6.25-1.25-1-1.5-1.25 bottom row

I don't know. Chances are it's a side effect of the "normal" bottom rows that just lines up for some reason. I think this particular one is using the 1.25u from normal ansi bottom row, the 1u is in the spot that a 1.5u would be for 7u bottom row, the 1.5u is where the 1u would be for 7u bottom row, and the last 1.25u is from the normal ansi row again. So this entire thing is kinda the ugly lovechild of 6.25u and 7u bottom rows. I'm looking forward to all the pics of this bottom row meant to make people uncomfortable :P

Just some really crazy colors I don't know if such a thing would cost more or less but would just be fun instead of the same old.. Red, Black, white, green options.

Good news mad lads, got the quotes back on the PCBs and it's even better than anticipated. Previously I had estimated PCB cost at $35 apiece, but now even with the "fancy" soldermask colors we're looking at only $30 apiece at 50 units MOQ each for both the Matte Black and Purple. Not much of a drop at higher units, $28 at 100 units each, but that's fine with me since the starting price is so low. This also means that the total price of the kit will be lower, so I'll work on finalizing that next.

Alright, so JOlimon is touching base with his supplier to get detailed quotes for the frosted acrylic pieces for the middle and hipro layers. Additionally, I have the pricing for the plates of the case. As mentioned, we're gonna allow ordering the plates in each color, so they'll each have their own MOQs, which are as follows:

10 sets(bottom+top) - $25 each
25 sets - $20
50 sets - $17
75 sets - $14
100 sets - $13.5

I'll be putting an option on the order form that will give you a backup in the case that your first color doesn't hit MOQ, most likely one of the two "main" color plates, black or white.

You're going to need switches, caps, and some stabilizers at the very least. The final cost of the build is going to vary greatly depending on how much you feel like spending.

You'll need your choice of switches, stabilizers, and keycaps. I'll be running a mini-GB for stablizers alongside the boards, switches you can get from somewhere like https://novelkeys.xyz/ , and keycaps can be had from a bunch of different places. Depending on what you're looking for in switches and keycaps, it should definitely be possible to get this completed board for less than $200.

For example, you could buy Gateron switches for $0.20 ea (https://kbdfans.cn/collections/swtich/products/gateron-swtich-3pin-or-5pin?variant=35765199245)
Or Zealios switches for $0.85 ea (https://kbdfans.cn/collections/swtich/products/zealio-swtich-tactile)

And you can get a keyset pretty cheap (https://kbdfans.cn/collections/keycaps/products/npkc-pbt-keycaps-104keys-side-print) or very pricy (https://www.originativeco.com/products/sa-hyperfuse). It's all up to how you want to build it.

thanks for the info! i was hesitant in asking but glad i did. I knew I'd need switches and caps but I had no idea what stabs were. looking forward to see this gb happen!

one more question, how easy is it to screw up and ruin your everything? or is there some room for error?

cant wait for this to drop!

my plan is:
frosted top and clear all the way down
or
black fr4 top and clear all the way down for that underglow magic

Good news for everyone looking for photogenic PCBs, as well as those that just like a little more bling in their life: both our PCB colors are now coming with gold immersion finish for no additional costs! Now we're just waiting on confirmed pricing for the acrylic bits and we're good to get this show on the road!

Just another small update while we're still working on this, we're still waiting to hear back on frosted acrylic pricing to finalize case pricing. Additionally, after finding out that QMK support is possible on ps2avrgb boards, I'll be working along with the wonderful mr mechmerlin in order to try and get QMK working on here. I figure that there's really no harm in getting it QMK functional and can only help to get more people interested in the board.

Alright, so we've hit a "good news, bad news" situation here.

I'll start with the good news:
 - QMK support is on its way, I worked with the lovely mechmerlin last night to get the matrix and pinout of the PCB all traced out, so now he's working on getting that plugged in where it goes before I'll be test-shoving it onto one of the protos.

 - JOlimon finally got numbers back on the frosted acrylic mid and hipro sections, which leads us to

Bad news:
 - The acrylic bits are pricier than I wanted them to be, especially the hipro sections. Frosted 9mm is so pricey that it's actually cheaper to get frosted 3mm and put the time into cutting 3 slices of it to use, which brings us to the current discussion point: single 9mm slices or triple 3mm slices.

While it would be more inline with the budget-oriented nature of this build to go with the cheaper 3mm slices, I know that I personally would be willing to pay the small bit extra for the appearance of the single 9mm slice, though others may prefer the small cost savings of the 3mm slices. Additionally, the hipro layer may not be viable with the 3mm slices. The cost difference between the options would be less that $5 per case.

I've got this poll here https://www.strawpoll.me/15578311 to see what the general consensus is going to look like for this.

I think it depends on how much more the single middle piece would be compared to the three stacked pieces. If it's not that much more, I would 100% be willing to pay that extra for the single piece of acrylic.

Yeah, can we get the actual estimated price? If it’s really only a $5 difference - I would totally rather have the single piece.

Same question here. $5 isn't a problem but I'm curious to see where the final total is atm.

For rough pricing, since it's not quite finalized yet, we'd be looking at ~$37 per 9mm middle and ~$33 per 3mm middles, both at 15 moq.

Honestly, I'd pay the extra ~$4 for the 9mm piece. It's such a small difference.

Same. Sounds like it would save on production time as well? Not having to cut the individual 3mm pieces.

If hipro tops could be done with the 3mm slices, which I'm not certain they could, the price difference would be less, closer to $2-$3, due to not being able to nest them like the middle slices can be. Right now the pricing for the hipro tops is around $47 for 9mm, unfortunately higher than I was expecting due to higher material usage from being unable to nest and the costs of the frost material.

So using the highest estimates right now, what’s the cost of a full board looking like? I assume it’s still under $150.....maybe still under $100?

So at 15MOQ for the middles, which uses the 10MOQ price point for the plates, we're looking at:

PCB - $30
Plates - $25/set
Middle - $37
Hipro - $47
GMK Screw-in stabs - $10/set

So you're looking at $92 base, $139 with hipro, $149 with hipro and stabs, all at the lowest MOQ. And all things considered, this is pretty much ready to move forward. We've got all our pricing and some last details can be worked out during the buy period.

I know MOQ was discussed for the plates, anything for the acrylic? Also is there a possibility to buy just plates and pcb (no acrylic) and run naked?

Both middle and hipro are the 9mm frost. MOQ points for the middle and hipros will be 15, 30, and 60 units each. Depending on how our hardware situation turns out defines if the middle will be optional for the build.

102 + cost of switches.. you can get a complete non Hipro set.. which is a insanely good deal.. if nothing more it be fun to practice with. I know you most likely answered this before does the board have RGB glow under it? and is the middle/plates going to be frosted I guess Middle will for sure be some type of plastic.. not sure what you worked out with the plates. Either way really interested cause it just seems like a cheap fun way to try out some new switches and practice soldering.

Middle will be frost acrylic for the built in underglow, FR4 with several color options for cheaper and more durable plates.

Probably not any substantial amount, which is one downside of the FR4 plate. Backlighting should light it up well though.

That depends on which hardware we're able to use. We have 2 different standoffs that should be available to us, a skinnier one and a wider one. The wider one is the one we need due to the wider holes in the FR4 to accommodate the countersinking screws, but the shipment of those wider ones has been delayed so far. If we have to end up using the skinnier standoffs, they won't be able to be used without the middle section. I'm hoping we're able to use the wider ones since I like the extra durability from them as well.

Quick question before this gets locked:

I see the PCB supports the layout I want (3x1u right of the spacebar vs 2x1.5), but the plate/case does not as depicted in all the pictures.

Am I gonna have to come up with my own top plate solution?

Title: Re: [IC] budget96 PCB and Case - mmm, QMK?
Post by: donutcat on Mon, 30 April 2018, 11:14:56
The initial protos of the case only had a single layout since we weren't focusing on the layouts at the time, plates for the GB will support at minimum the common 96key layouts and we're aiming to support everything the PCB supports if it doesn't compromise the plates.
