Title: [GB] XDA Oblique (complete)
Post by: dr_derivative on Thu, 05 July 2018, 11:51:32
(https://i.imgur.com/hcLi3Tl.png)

IC thread link (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=93586.0)

XDA Oblique is a keyset inspired by the keycaps of the AEK, M0116, AEKII, and similar Apple keyboards. The font used in this keyset is Oswald Light and is angled at 17°. This is a very close to Univers 57 Condensed Oblique, the font used on the AEK. I have modified/resized some of the symbols to match the AEK. Even Univers 57 isn't an exact match to the AEK's font though; it is slanted at a smaller angle and several of the symbols are different. The colour will be Pantone Cool Grey 2 U, which matches Apple's colour very well.

Now to decide whether to get base or katakana alphas. Tentatively in for alphas, text mods and accents.

Fantastic! Already ordered a number of sets for my TKL.

Will texture be same as Canvas? I'd prefer smooth feel like AEK.

I think since it's PBT plastic, it's got the traditional treatment, which I believe Canvas has as well. If you notice from the zoomed in samples photos (https://i.imgur.com/okrisAs.jpg), you can notice the texture.

There is no stepped centre-stem capslock/control?

Should've asked in the IC. It's a very uncommon key though. I'd bet most manufacturers don't have a mold for it.

I think it does exist for XDA IIRC, although I can't find it on any of Massdrop's XDA drop pages. Maybe Canvas R1 or Milestone used it?

Anyway, as xondat said if it had been asked a couple weeks ago I could've added it, but it's a bit late now  :(

... And when does ordering end?

The 5th of August ;D

Yes, XDA has a slight texture; it'll be the same as Canvas.

Milestone (the first XDA set) had a centre stem stepped caps, that'd be why! Terribly uncommon key, though.

Not for XDA sets. I bought a blank XDA set that came with a centered stem stepped caps and an off center stem, and I'm pretty sure the xda canvas set came with one:

I didn't realise that all 3 stepped caps were off-centre stems during the IC D: Oh well, maybe for R2! Anyway, the just-concluded XDA Canvas R2 had centre-stem stepped caps in the Hobbyist kits.

Yep, all vendors will have price drops.

Out of curiosity, which manufacturer is producing this set?

I'm not sure what they're called to be honest, they may well not have an English name. zF have done most of the communication with the manufacturer.

Curious why it is cheaper to buy it from the Chinese GB on zfrontier. Could we make the prices consistent according to the exchange rates?

It is cheaper for zF to ship keysets to Chinese buyers, so that's reflected in the price. Also, they wanted to have the international prices consistent with Dixie Mech's which include the extra shipping and tax and stuff for shipping China->US.

Just an FYI, those numbers on DixieMech (and afaik all other vendors) are for units sold, and are there to help buyers see what level of quantity discount they will get.

These group buys generally mean everyone who pays and signs up for certain kits gets them :)

Just realized I totally misread/misunderstood these posts :|

Is there a difference between 2u vertical and 2u spacebars (and the 1.5u verticals and 1.5u blanks)? I have an XDA blank set that I've used on my Ergodox and there's no difference for that set; will that be the same for these keycaps?

I'm trying to figure out how I can get 4 2u blanks for my Ergodox. I'll probably pick up the 'dox set anyways, but just want to check first before I pull the trigger and join the GB.

Are the order counts up on Dixiemech inclusive of all the other vendors?

Nope, they're just the US orders. I'll get a spreadsheet up in the coming days to properly track total orders across all vendors.

Is there a difference between 2u vertical and 2u spacebars (and the 1.5u verticals and 1.5u blanks)? I have an XDA blank set that I've used on my Ergodox and there's no difference for that set; will that be the same for these keycaps?

1.5u and 2u verticals are just 1.5u and 2u keys rotated by 90°. Some sets use 2u spacebars, but the ergodox users I spoke to when designing this set said they preferred regular 2u keys.

Why is the modern M0110 kit only available on mykeyboard.eu ?

The M0110 kit is an add-on for the Modern M0110 GB so it's available with the vendors running that GB.

Any way to get a 1.5u Esc for Race 3 people without having to get the whole Ergodox set?

A Race 3 Esc is pretty non-standard, so it's not supported out of the box. You can get the blanks kit to fill that position, or use any other 1.5u key if you don't mind an incorrect legend.

Just ordered Katakanas, Accents, Novelties, and Spacebars!

Sorry for the noob question, but which sets(s) would I need to fit my Vortex Race 3? I know it has some funky key sizes.

Either set of alphas, either set of base mods, the compatibility kit for 1u bottom row keys and 1.5u delete.

The 1.5u esc isn't included (unless you buy the ergodox kit for just one key) because it's pretty extremely non-standard. You can get the blanks kit to fill it with a blank or just use any leftover 1.5u key if you don't mind an incorrect legend.

It may change depending on the vendor, and folks can correct me if I'm wrong, but if you've been charged, you'll get refunded the difference once payment is collected.

Other vendors may place a $0.01 holding charge that later gets amended to the proper amount; I'm pretty sure that's how restaurants do tips, but again I'm a little out of my jurisdiction here.

I can see on dixiemech that the base alphas have hit the 2nd price break already, and that's just for them.  This is great!  Where do the overall counts sit across all vendors?  Could we already have hit price breaks for some of the other kits?

Woo! I'll probably be joining the Blanks kit before the GB closes, so hopefully that one will hit MoQ.

I think OP said he was going to update the DM image with all vendors' numbers, not sure if that has been done yet; but I'd be pretty shocked if the UK/Intl kits didn't at least hit the first MoQ…

I have current numbers for Dixie and zF, and I have numbers from MyKeyboard which are a bit out of date. Dave from MechKeys is understandably pretty caught up with the Espectro GB, so I don't have their numbers.

But based on just the numbers I have, everything but the homing, ergodox, UK, and intl kits have hit MOQ. Those kits, especially the UK and intl kits, will hopefully get a big boost when I get MyKeyboard's numbers. I'm not super worried about any kits not hitting MOQ at the moment. We have ~160 base alphas sold, so it might even reach the 250 MOQ before the end of the GB ;D

Hi there, definitely gonna get this set for sure.

I am currently based in Asia right now, but will be moving to London later this year. Will it make sense for me to order it through zfrontier's site and wait till I head home in Dec to collect it or order directly from mykeyboard.eu and pay the customs? It seems like the pricing on mykeyboard.eu is higher and I am not too sure what the UK customs duty will be like.

You won't have customs duty if you order from mykeyboard.eu, what you pay is all you pay.

Maybe, although it won't happen any time soon. I'm generally not a big fan of groupbuys that run a second round only a year or so after the first round ships.

Here are the final sales from the GB:

Base Alphas397
Katakana Alphas146
Base Text Mods240
Base Icon Mods186
Accents237
Numpad133
Compatibility197
Spacebars161
Homing46
40%59
Ortholinear131
Ergodox31
UK15
International14
Novelties204
Blanks69
Total2266

In addition to this the vendors will be buying some extras to sell after the GB, so we're at >2.5k sets including extras.

I'm really happy with how well this GB has gone; I had never thought we'd sell this many kits, especially considering we were running alongside DSA Milkshake (which also sold >2k kits). A week before the end we'd just hit 1k, but the numbers crept up very quickly after that. We sold nearly 500 kits on the last day alone. ;D

Thank you to everyone who joined the GB and made this set possible :-*

@ dr_derivative: What kind of sets did vendors purchase? I'm thinking of joining the Tokyo60 drop and want to grab a Spacebar kit if possible

They bought extras for all the kits that sold reasonably well, so getting a spacebar kit shouldn't be a problem.

Huge congrats, man. Great numbers for your first GB. While waiting for November to arrive, I bought a placeholder XDA set for my weird board, and its stellar dye-sub quality allows me to be very optimistic for XDA Oblique.

Thank you ;D

@dr_derivative could we get an update on the status?

I emailed Dixie inquiring about price drop refunds and was told they would be processed after the invoice has been paid. I don't know if it's a normal thing for the invoice not being paid after almost a month of the buy period ending, but just a quick update on the situation would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Looks like they replied to you before they replied to me :)) But yeah, payment to the manufacturer is being done through zF since it's a Chinese manufacturer. They're super busy at the moment because they've had a bunch of groupbuys all finish at the same time.

Oh wow, great job! Looking forward to receiving the caps!!!

Hello everyone - noob here,

This is one of my favorite sets I've ever seen, especially since I'm a mac user. I'm purchasing my first mechanical keyboard soon and I'm bummed I missed this. Does anyone know if there will be any shops selling these after the group buy? I'm in the US. Hope this goes smoothly for everyone.

Yeah, I've been waiting for a set like this for most of my MK journey! I haven't seen any names mentioned, but it's been said in this thread that some vendors have bought up stock so you should see some pop up not long after the sets start shipping. Keep an ear out at the end of the year, I'd say.

If you're in the US, dixiemech.com is where a limited number of sets will be available.  These won't show up in their shop though until after they've shipped everything out to the group buy participants though.  I'd recommend signing up for their mailing list to keep up to date.

There might be a slight delay because it took a little longer than expected to make payment to the manufacturer. I don't know how much that will affect our timeline though since we'd still have been waiting behind other sets in the production queue.

Other than that I believe we're still pretty much on track.

Delays are a normal part of any keyboard-related GB. I don't think I've ever joined one that didn't experience a delay of some sort. This is par for the course and not cause for concern. I'm not even sure I can call it disappointing since I was never expecting it to hit its original deadlines to begin with.

I'll ask. I still haven't heard back whether it was the canvas delays that caused our delays in the first place, but I'll follow up on that.

Blanks are definitely the same factory, there is only one factory with XDA moulds. I'm not sure what dyesubber Canvas is using though, but it may well be the same too.

This is why you put deadlines w/ claw-backs into production run contracts.

Good luck getting a factory to sign up for that.  Not for the small time money these runs make them, no way

Agreed, that's pretty much unheard of in the community, all we get are estimates. It seems like it wasn't really a promise in the first place, just that they were hoping to be done by CNY. So far the delays are reasonable, that's what we all signed up for.

Got another update from the manufacturer today. Their productivity was not as high as expected with people taking holidays early for CNY, so they won't be finished before the Chinese new year :( . Their new delivery estimate is the end of February.

They did send some photos of the production sets though (albeit in ****ty factory lighting):

Been thinking maybe the modern M0110, depending on which switches I end up going with. I tend to like pairing XDA with light linear switches.

It's been my intention to put these on a Modern M0110 (Light Sand Cerakote) well.  Interestingly enough, both projects seem to be progressing at about the same pace in production which has worked out alright.

My plan remains the same, as in I will put it on my weird-ass Katana60 (https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/95wrna/fearful_symmetry_my_endgame_katana60_is_finally/).

Funny thing is, after this GB, for some reasons this type of italic legends has picked up steam elsewhere. I have one of these on the way for my HHKB:

I put Canvas XDA on my Tokyo60.

While not quite italic, I feel Canvas is somewhat related to Oblique in nature.  Like these keycap sets are descended from alternate timelines out of the 80s.  There's just something about them on this form factor that is quite visually appealing.

It's a fully customize board, I "designed" the PCB base on Mitosis, now it's an hot-swappable board, but the PCBs are no longer reversible.

Then I designed and 3d printed the case.

Well "Oblique" literally means italic, so not really. But they are thin in nature, so that is related.

Also, the success of Oblique basically lead to the use of the original Oblique legends of the vintage Apple boards. This is a normal thing in this community. Something does really well and everyone copies it. Look at how many different versions of 9009 released this last year after GMK 9009 R2. Its just something that happens.

> Well "Oblique" literally means italic, so not really. But they are thin in nature, so that is related.

In typeography Obliques and Italics are actually different, but similar, things. They both achieve the same effect of emphasis but go about it in a slightly different, but important, way.

Italics are not just angled versions of their 'Regular' siblings. They are genreally new letterforms that are more caligraphic.  For instance consider this sample of a variant of Garamond.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/60/GaramondSpecimenA.svg

You can see that especially the lower case characters exhibit this 'new calligraphic letterform', an especially obvious example being the lowercase a which goes from a regular 'two story' a to a single story a with italicized. Also you will notice that the counter of the a (the enclosed area) detaches from the stem much higher up, you also see this on the q. Similarly the shoulder of the r (the bit on the right) separates from the stem similarly, gradually lower on the stem unlike the regular where it's abrupt right near the top.

Here below is a sample of univers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Univers#/media/File:Univers_sample_2015.png

As you can see here the oblique characters are simply 'tilted' versions of their 'regular' siblings. Sometimes there are slight changes in the line weight to correct for some visual weight, but generally that kind of change is very subtle.

Generally speaking you will see italic versions of serif typefaces and obliques for sans typefaces. But that's not 100% the case, I've seen a few weirdos in my day.

Just a little education from a type nerd.

The page on Oblique typefaces on wikipedia is pretty good at going into more detail.

I just got word that the manufacturer will be sending some production samples to zF next week to check if everything is good with the final sets. This means they have at least started production :)) .

They haven't given any estimated completion dates this time, so I have no idea when they'll be shipping at this point. But considering how inaccurate their previous estimates were I don't think it makes much difference anyway :)) .

Sorry about all the delays everyone has had to sit through. At least there does seem to be some progress even if it is slow. I hope it'll all be worth it in the end.

I'm not too concerned about delays or wait times! It happens for sure. My biggest issue is the complete radio silence from MechKeys.ca... I can't get a response from them and if they don't change my shipping address this set will be delivered to some strangers who probably won't appreciate what they're receiving at all.

Ok, so I some good news for once ;D

The manufacturer sent more than just the production samples they promised to zFrontier. They sent 5 huge boxes of keycaps, which should be a good portion of the total order.

There seem to be at least both types of alphas and mods, as well as spacebar, numpad, and blanks kits. I won't know for sure which kits and how many until they have been properly sorted.

It doesn't look like any of the kits with coloured keys (accents, 40s, ortho, and ergo) are present, so I assume they're still in production.

Looks like we won't be waiting until December after all :))

Awesome!!!

Sweet!
I wonder if zFrontier will start shipping each order as soon as the sorting is finished, or if they will wait for all the kits before sending then all to the postal in one single trip.
And yeah, I did not buy any kit with accent keys  :)

I blame XDA Canvas and their re-design delay which consequently led to our delay ;)

and xda canvas is being run again, so soon!!

Too soon IMHO, but it's mito's decision really. Last round's caps are not warm on my fingers yet.

I'm not sure, but there is a lot of sorting to do first. The GB sold like 2.6k kits total, so it could take a while before they start shipping regardless :))

Hope they use some sort of tray to hold the caps. XDA Canvas was a mess as lots of people got wrong keys.

Ok, so zF have received the full order of regular & katakana alphas, text mods (and I think icon mods too, but they didn't say), numpad, spacebars, and blanks.

They also sent samples of the accent, homing, 40%, ortho, ergo, UK, and int kits. There is also a sample of the M0110 kit (although technically not part of this GB).

They said that the blue accent keys look less saturated IRL than in the photos. Also, the orange keys are done in a different orange. Here's a pic of the orange accents next to a correct colour sample.

The remaining kits are still in production. The factory estimates 2 weeks, although we all know how accurate their previous estimates have been :))

I'm currently confirming if they'll start shipping now or whether they're waiting for the full order.

The remaining kits should be shipped from the manuf to zFrontier tomorrow. Sets bought from zF should hopefully start shipping pretty soon ;D. The rest of the world will have to wait a little bit longer for international shipping, customs clearance, etc. but hopefully that won't be too much longer.

The remainder of Oblique has arrived at zFrontier. They're already starting to ship kits out to the other vendors, after which they should start shipping to customers.

...

So am I expecting more or less than a month more if I ordered from Dixie Mech?

I'll ask him for a rough estimate. Shipping from China to him should be pretty fast but I've no idea how long it'll take to clear customs and for him to sort and ship everything.

Does Dixie put up extras after they receive the shipment and the main orders are shipped out ?

That is what usually happens. I'll post here on the thread when extras are up (if nobody else beats me to it).

Sorry peeps. Not much of a GH-er. I have received the sets, confirmed that we were shipped the correct number of every kit and have packed about half of them as of tonight. I am going to grind it out tomorrow and Friday and try to get them all done to try to have them shipped out Friday. These take a bit longer to pack than GMK, as you can image with 18ish kits to sort through. Remember that we do have about 1300 of the 2000+ kits that were ordered, so we are going to take a bit longer to finish than the other proxies, who have much smaller numbers. But we are heavily into it and are working hard to get it all out to everyone.

Also, the missing blank 2u cap has been added to all the ErgoDox kits so they have all been fixed.

As 1 of 31 who ordered the Ergodox kit, woo! Thanks for the update.

Hey, uhh...

Were any extra ErgoDox sets made in order to meet MOQ? Looking for someone to take one off your hands? ;)

We didn't order any extra kits for MOQ reasons, we just dropped to a lower MOQ on some kits. According to the spreadsheet exactly 31 kits were ordered at an MOQ of 25 :(

Oooof looks like there won’t be any ergodox sets on dixiemech after the sets have shipped. Oh well, I should’ve gotten it during the group buy

They're in the process of shipping at the moment. Moridin (two posts up) got his from mykeyboard, at least that's what he said in his reddit post.

In my experience it can take a few days for them/their courier to send out shipping notifications, so yours could even already be en route ;D

I sent them an email about my order 10 days ago – still no response. And I never received any kind of refund for the MOQ either.

Hopefully once they receive the sets and start mailing them out, they'll break their radio silence 😛🙏

Curious observation:

XDA Oblique feels much more premium that my GMK WoB set. The keycaps sound better, they appear to be thicker, better made... Quite frankly I don’t know what I paid for getting GMK.

Otherwise, amazing keycap set.

There are extra F and J keys since both homing and non-homing keys were included. If you look closely one should be slightly deeper than the other.

And the extra \|ム key is to cover a split left shift.

I’ve been using XDA Canvas on my main board for awhile now, and coming from more sculpted caps it took me a little while to get used to.  But it’s pretty nice, and certainly looks great as a profile.
Just my opinion, but I feel it seems more ideal for smaller boards than larger ones.

Oblique will be my 2nd XDA though, and can’t wait to get them in my hands.

Agreed about XDA working better with smaller boards (like DSA IMO). I used XDA on my daily driver for about 6 months. It's kinda meh. I don't love it, but I don't hate it. You get used to it but after switching back to Cherry you realize what you're missing in terms of good ergonomics. I'm still hyped for this set though. Looks soo good.

Good news is, I can’t believe both this set and the Plaid kit arrived in the same week.

Bad news is, I did not anticipate getting into ortho and so did not purchase the ortho kit.

Good news is, thanks to the novelties, no big deal :)

In the same boat from mechkeys :( Nothing from them since the email asking to confirm my address almost a week ago. I've reached out a few times over the past few weeks about shipping and other things (MOQ refunds), but they haven't responded. Mechkeys has unfortunately been pretty poor with communication during the whole process. Quite disappointed in that aspect of this GB. But the caps look worth it 🙏

Same here , love SA (DSA not so much) and XDA took some getting used to. It’s the uniform profile than anything. I have xda canvas on one of my boards and after using some risers to give it an angle, it’s quite enjoyable. The surface area of the caps are larger, I make fewer mistakes

I ordered using mykeyboard.eu and got a few bucks back today, I think the production costs for the sets ended up being a bit lower than planned. Nice of the GB runners and proxies to give that money back instead of pocketing it.

There are some huge dealbreakers for me:
- They are using EnjoyPBT beige white, not grey white like this set or the OG.
- Icon-only modifiers do not look good with the AEK’s thin font.
- Dat shift icon. Ouch.
- The Japanese set has the sub-legends below the main ones and not side by side. Just no.
- The novelty set, while kinda fun with that coffee cup one, actually looks pretty boring and not at all retro-Mac-themed. The iPod? The iOS notification? C’mon!
Maybe I’m just too much of an Apple fan, but yeah, no.

I think if I were to run Oblique again it would be in a sculpted profile. Not sure about Cherry specifically, but definitely something a lot nicer to type on than XDA. I can't see it running any time soon with ext 2048 running now though. And it is priced very nicely, so it might be a nice set to tide you over until sculpted Oblique happens. I'm considering picking up a set myself ;D

But it does not have the beautiful color mods like Oblique. Looking very good and competetively priced, though. Plus, Cherry is nicer to type on, more than I thought when I thought at first. :-)

They're shipping sets at the moment, I think some people have already received theirs. In my experience it can take a few days for their courier to email out tracking numbers though.

I don't know I feel about the epbt extended 2048. I kind of want oblique in cherry profile, but the 2048 font kind of looks off and not as good as oblique

All true, but still... it's Cherry profile. XDA is just so much harder to type on

TKC's Katakana was close as well.

True. There's also KBDfans' italic XDA set which is sort of similar; and stock magicforce keycaps are AEK-style now too.

Even though ext 2048 existed in IC form even before Oblique, I like to think I started a trend ;D

Well, first I bought a Preonic, then I got deathly ill and spent a month in the hospital. During my time there, I realized that life is too short for stupid bull**** and why should I have to deal with a number row - the very definition of "stupid bull****" in any sort of technical work - when I could instead have a numpad, which is not stupid bull****. And would make a totally boss looking extended Planck-style layout.

Nobody made it.

So I made it. Designed the PCB, iterated it through testing myself and testing with other people, and now I have a 4x16 board with underlighting and audio. Runs QMK. I call it Stand Aside.

I'm working on its successor, Hard Light, which features per-key RGB.

Just got my set last week (Dixie) and finally had time to install it yesterday. Was dismayed to see I didn't have enough to cover a full KBD75 layout. My fault for not ordering a (compat?) set (or just everything tbh). Anyone have 1.5u cmd and option they'd be willing to part with?

Also throwing my hat in hoping for extras. Set is dope.

Mine was scheduled to be delivered on Friday but now has a Canada Post tracking status of "Item redirected to recipient's new address" which sounds like despite messaging MechKeys directly on Facebook; emailing; contacting on discord and responding to the address confirmation email that was sent out before shipping, they still sent it to my old address and it is now en route to be sent to my dad's new address in a different city. I wonder if I'll ever see these caps or a refund should they not arrive. What a nightmare.

Ouch. That is incredibly frustrating. All of my attempts to contact mechkeys also went unanswered, I guess I was lucky to at least receive my set. Let me know if you ever hear from them or there's anything I can do to help get their attention.

I also suspect that we won't be seeing the MOQ refunds from them, which is a shame.

Really unfortunate that their communication was abysmal during this process. Definitely won't be doing business with them again.

If you have any extra 6.25" spacebars, please consider selling those as a separate kit. My spacebar came marked up and it bugs me, so I will be trying to find another 6.25" spacebar.

Overall really nice set and GB, even with the production delays.

If your spacebar came like that you should probably get in contact with your local vendor to ask about a replacement. I believe the factory made some spares to cover those kind of issues.

Got mine in! No action pics yet since I'm still waiting on a few pieces for the build these are going on. Back when this was first announced I bought a set of XDA blanks on aliexpress, and so I thought I'd do a quick color comparison between them and Oblique. The left upside down key is from my blanks,  and the right is from Oblique:

Definitely different shades, but it's pretty hard to tell without fairly bright fluorescent/LED lights. They should work great for what I have planned, dying some blanks for color-coordinated accent keys.

On the off chance anyone is not using a set that can fit a KBD75, I'm looking to get another set to duplicate my setup at work. Open to icons or text, color or no color, just want to cover the board with correct sizing.

Atleast until a sculpted rerun is done (I'd vote for Cherry profile or SA!).

I'd be interested in another run as well.

Thanks, but I'd love the japanese characters.

I'm kicking myself that I didn't get the compatibility kit for HHKB layouts :/ Luckily I believe I have a majority compatible keys aside from the spacebar.

If XDA is at all possible for another run, I'd definitely be down for another kit or 2 fwiw

If anyone is interested, I am still trying to get rid of the last kit that I was unable to sell last year: 40%. Not sure if there is anybody who just needs that kit, but figured I would include it here just in case.

Thanks for the heads-up! Always appreciate people who post these here; if you had the Spacebars or Compatibility kit I'd have no choice, but looks like I've got the kits you're selling.

Best of luck!

That's the plan. I'm working on TA Origins right now, so maybe late this year or early next. Not sure yet ;D

Would be very interested in a Cherry profile re-run.
