Post your tricked out CM QFRs
« on: Tue, 05 March 2013, 23:49:53 »
I only have a stock one but I have caps in the mail. (will post pics when they arrive)

I mainly want to see what everyone has done to theirs to give me some ideas/ inspiration. My overall goal is to do a full swap of keys on my QFR and turn it into a very custom board with altered modifiers, custom WASD cluster and custom F row.

Post your pictures por favor!

I find the stock QFR just way to heavy, so I did a lightweight mod to remove all the excess components of my QFR, functionality was slightly impacted, but overall I'm happy with the mod.

Is it a tricked out QFR if it has a Phantom PCB? I'll have at least one when ever the Phantoms arrive. I might still do another one with a WFD plate before that happens as practice/warm up.

isn't it then, just another keyboard in a QFR box?

This is nice looking.

I would imagine that model primer would be the best option for this kind of things as it pretty much soaks into the plastic.

I think if I stripped the keyboard and painted the frame black I would get the stealth keys with the lettering on the front facing side. I really like that look for a keyboard.

This is a really nice looking keyboard though. I love the clean blank key look on these.

How was the LED swap? After I get my QFR back I'm considering getting a vortex filco case and moving the leds over to the circles filco keeps em in, and maybe a color change while I'm at it.

All you gotta do is desolder the LED's and put in the ones of your preference.

Did you take any pics of the connections? Are they just standard LEDs that sit in the slot in the switch?

Also, does anyone know what size LEDs Filcos use?

I first sanded the case with incrementally finer grit sandpaper and then painted it with Krylon fusion.

I assume you did the sanding to remove the rubber coating mainly.

Haha, thanks.  It's actually cyan, but cyan seems to be one of those colors that's really hard to get right when you're photographing and even harder to edit properly when your monitor isn't quite calibrated correctly.

Why not?  I love my QFR.  When I was looking at swapping the LEDs I was pretty impressed with the build quality of it.

Right now I'm on my laptop (T500), but the QFR is my go to board when I'm on my desktop.  That may change when I need to start typing more and I finish my RK9000 Clear mod that I'm currently in the middle of.

So far I've desoldered all the Reds from the board, sanded away the red powder coating from the top of the plate and painted it white and sealed it (I should have powder coated it, but I didn't think of it until too late), tested all my Clears since they were used, and painted the top half of the shell white, clear coated it, and PlastiDipped it.  On the list to do is sorting out the Clears to use since some of them are ugly, probably swapping them to the Red housing since they're plate mount and the Clear housing is PCB mount with a diode, stickering the switches with white stickers for aesthetics, swapping in some 65g Korean springs (assuming I can ever find some), probably lubing the switches, and mounting and resoldering the switches.  A pair of PCB lands were mucked up at the time of manufacturing it seems, so I have to either repair them or bridge them when I resolder.  I'll probably do the latter since it's easier.  After that, it's saving up for one of these awesome blue, red, or pink keycap sets.
