Why won't logitech just remake the G9X?
« on: Mon, 30 May 2016, 03:22:38 »
Tried g502 and g303 for months as daily mouse, back to G9X. This thing is definitely gonna die soon. I stopped playing counter strike so I don't need the super accurate sensor anymore (though I can still feel the inaccuracy...) so I'd rather not hurt my hand. Sigh ~

It looks cool but the off-center sensor bothers me, like if my car steering wheel weren't centered to my body. I'd try a remake if they fixed that awkward design flaw.

I'm not sure what philosophy dictates that companies should rarely, if ever, release revamped versions of old designs. You're definitely not the first I have read who wanted this released again.

I ended up buying several NIB G400s's recently because I like the shape since it fits my hand perfectly. I classic shape but, oh no, now the corporate design gods have dictated they can never use it again for eternity.

if you really like it that much, just make it a habit to look for used ones.
you can also get replacement feet and even replacement cables. and replacement switches!
what makes you think it's going to "die" soon, though?

here's two auctions with reasonable prices:

Been trying to replace mine for ages as well and just can't find anything as good. So also hoping mine doesn't die, it's done some funny things a couple times...

depending on your skill, you might be able to put a different PCB into the G9x. it would probably require very heavy modding, though, and possibly soldering.
afaik there has never been anything released that truly satisfied G9(x) users. your best bet is googling for a bit to see what others deemed a worthy successor. (but you won't find a G9-like shape with the 3360 sensor i'm afraid - from what i've read the Corsair M65 Pro didn't turn out so well.)

I feel your pain. I have a brand new G9x that's just lying around because I can't get over the sensor, which I find frustrating, because I love the shape and how stable/grounded (for a lack of better terms) it feels.

Luckily, I don't game very much nowadays, but I recently went back to using my G9x with the wider grip and I didn't realize how uncomfortable it was. Within the past few weeks, I just ended up buying 3 new G9Xs off eBay to get the precision grip (feels great now) and spare mouse in case mine ever craps out. Maybe you can mod it with a better sensor? I don't know, but it is a little more jittery compared to my G602 so I keep both plugged in and switch mindlessly lol. The G602 wheel takes a lot to activate compared to the G602 also.

If you haven't tried the G602, you may like it if you use the precision grip. I feel it's not as wide as the G9x with the wide grip though. It's more ergo if anything.

What's wrong with your current G9X?

I just replaced the cable on my G9. It's going strong and I don't want to replace it because there's nothing good on the market.

On another note, there's someone in my city that I found on Kijiji who is selling a very slightly used G9 for $45 CAD. A bit compelling but it's really a 10 year old device =\
Not sure what to do.

well, the fact that it's 10 years old goes both ways. its internals are outdated, yeah, but if yours ever breaks then you'll have to get lucky finding a(n affordable) replacement.
it's safe to assume that logitech will not make an updated G9x, so if you love the mouse as-is then you might want to get a backup, sooner or later.
$45 isn't cheap though, so you could consider letting it slide and just keep an eye out for other sales. most sites allow you to save searches so that you get e-mailed if new auctions have been put on.

personally, i just try to imagine if / how much i will regret not getting something.
i give bonus points for 1) nothing is missing 2) everything still works 3) there's no damage 4) it's in good shape (little wear)

afaik there has never been anything released that truly satisfied G9(x) users. your best bet is googling for a bit to see what others deemed a worthy successor. (but you won't find a G9-like shape with the 3360 sensor i'm afraid - from what i've read the Corsair M65 Pro didn't turn out so well.)

I actually looked into that since the G9x is easily my favorite shape and it's sadly pretty difficult.  The G9x has a ridiculously low, cramped interior due to its design (the weight compartment and such).  I tried a fair number of PCBs and they were basically all too tall (a byproduct of the lens since it's really low profile in the G9x but not with other mice) or too wide in the front, not to mention the plungers that hit the M1/M2 are offset in the G9x so you'd have to figure out something for that.  Basically you need to find a mouse that is small and very low profile, but those are the mice that get bad sensors.  The side buttons also provide a challenge due to having a weird design so you'd probably have to be fine without those (and there's no chance you could use the DPI buttons).

It's a real shame that logitech is convinced a G9x refresh wouldn't sell.  I do think it's true it wouldn't sell gangbusters since it's not a shape for everyone, but there is absolutely a niche of people you could count on to buy it so they could just do a limited run or something.

What is it about the G9X that you just can't do without ? Is it the shape ? I had one a while back and I liked it but I saw someone asking $185 flipping dollars for a few in the marketplace. That blows my mind.

g9x is a ripoff. I wouldn't pay 200+ for 2 buttons and a laser sensor. That little screen is slick, but who's gonna use it? Wish the g502 was a g9x with g600 buttons and a g502 sensor with g502 weights. Same for g9, crappy laser and stingy macros for 200+.

die? what do you mean, disconnect issues? switch or wheel problems? in 99% of the cases those are fixable. if you really really love that G9(x), just open it up, clean it, fix whatever's broken
there's still not a good 1:1 replacement for the G9 shape. there are somewhat similar shapes out there, but still there are obvious differences

I too loved the G9x for many years...
I am now using the G Pro and I really like it. It's about 1.5cm longer, about the same height, and about 8mm wider than the G9x. Main differences are the good sensor, weight (No cartridge, and its very light), and how its shaped (G Pro is an ambi while the G9x slopes down from left to right).

Maybe try out the G Pro and see if its right for you?

Only get it if you love using the G3 series.  It's perfection for those that loved those older smaller shapes.

Currently using it and it's a delight to move across the mouse pad  :thumb: .

I picked up a g900 from Ebay, coming from a g502... I thought the shape would be garbage, but it's actually pretty good. 22 RWS every game, no lie.
I generally hate all keycaps. Keycaps are for poofs. Real men touchtype on stems. Non-functional artisans are awesome, I use them for the ESC key ... escape is for cowards anyways, real men go frontal assault.

I actully hada g9x, i got it in 6 or 7 years ago and went through one each year cause the stupid sensor would wear out, or the wheel would break, or the screen would crack, it goes on and on. One just wouldn't take power. but when g9x VII broke I said screw it and got a g502. Never been happier. Honestly it surpasses the g9x in sensor, macros, coustomization, being a mouse  :D and extra features. The dang thing was way too tiny., and the sensor is like ripped right from this logitech mouse I use at school-

so that's kind of sad. It was just not very ergonomic, it was cheap, and when my 7th gave out (wouldn't click) I wanted to dump it in the trash. IDK why I bought from logitech again as i hadn;t been too rough on my old one, but I did. The grips and screen were cool tho. I can't imagine using any other mouse, but a g502 like remake would be great. I think that was nutty of me. In fact my only beef with the g502 is you can't get 1 color on multiple dpi profiles. Oh yeah, fun fact i raged at my 7th when it lost power,  took the circuts out used it as a cat toy. And I STILL was not rough on it, I used it with utmost respect.

The gpro is too tiny. It's like a really downgraded g502. If you dont mind iffy battery, g700s is a good idea.

I disagree about the GPro being too small. I used to use the G9x without a shell before it died and the GPro has been a great substitute.

Still on my first G9 (no 'x') going strong for 10+ years of fairly heavy gaming.  Wouldn't use any other mouse (unless they brought back the Logitech MouseMan shape with updated internals and a wheel).  Got a spare G9 new in box should anything go wrong, but so far all I've had to do is shoot some air into the scroll wheel from time to time when it stops registering reliably.

Same here, the G Pro has a far more advanced sensor inside it that it Golden Showers the G9x, in every way possible.

alright i'm buying g pro on friday wish me luck.

No Luck needed, just make sure to get a SN: 1639LZ version because it's pure SEX without the downsides (like gaping, bruising, smelly sweat and pubes in mouth).

k just got home with it, way better than g502 or g303 but still no g9x. it's pretty nice though but i miss that angled slope. looks like 403 has something similar but it's too big.

weight on the g pro is really nice.

How many years have you've been using the G9x?

Getting your hand and wrist to use something other than the G9x is going to take time and reconditioning.  If after a week it doesn't suit you, take it back and get a refund.

this middle mouse button is so slow...

and for many years but i switched over to g303 cuz my g9x died

EDIT: yeah okay I can't use this mousewheel/mouse buttons. It tracks and feels so ****ing smooth though... sad to say I'm gonna be returning it and going back to G303 for now.

I understand your frustration with discontinued peripherals.  I've been looking for backup Ultra X boards which IMHO are the best keyboards Logitech ever made.

sucking it up because this mouse is too nice to not use just because of the ****ing scroll wheel, but it's too stiff man it actually hurts.

might try a 403 next?

Get a Logitech Trackman. Yes i know it has no sort of scroll wheel and that sucks, but it's the best mouse related input device I can possibly think of, for any purpose.

BTW Can't you replace the USB wire, and if that isn't the problem, the controller board inside of it with one from a different mouse..

Middle mouse button on the G403/G Pro is better than the G502, but still lackluster compared to the G602/G402/G303.

My Castor has one of the better middle mouse buttons of the past few years, and the cable while braided isn't stiff - similar in flexibility to paracord with it's internal core removed.

I know this is old but there probably shouldn't be more threads.

I'm not sure why logitech hasn't released a modernized g9x yet. They perfected their sensor/switches/firmware ages ago and pump out tons of weird and awkwardly shaped mouses with it. The g9x is for sure the best shaped mouse for fingertip gripping ever released, and I suppose logitech thinks the g303/g502 are proper replacements for it when they are not at all similar.

I've always hated inadequate sensors or firmware with smoothing/random acceleration/delay and what not but I still use the G9x over the dozens that I've tried. (EC2a, ninox aurora, ZA13, G-pro, G303, G400, FK2, WMO, abyssus, kinzu/kinzuadder)

From my understanding of the G9x sensor, the ADNS-9500, I will give some advice that might make using it more bearable. Laser sensors jitter a lot on bumpy and uneven surfaces, such as low-quality cloth mousepads like the QCK. Firmware is used to negate the jitter and this results in about 5% negative/positive acceleration at random. From my experience using flat surfaces lessens the acceleration quite a bit. I'm not really sure what the flattest kinds of mousepads would be but I'm currently using a frostpad (which is a glass mousepad similar to the icemat).

I'll make a list here of what are likely flat mousepads, starting from the flattest:
icemat/frostpad (the only issue with glass is that it degrades your mouseskates faster, you likely would need a few replacement ones)
any hardpad (I'm not fond of these at all, maybe some people would be)
artisan (the semi-hard/semi-glass ones such as the shiden)
artisan (cloth)
zowie GS-R (this mousepad is high quality & manufactured to be quite flat/durable, unlike the QCK, I am unsure if laser sensors perform any different on cloth pads though)

Another thing is that the G9x tends to jitter significantly if the sensor lens is dirty. You can test if there is any jitter by setting your G9x to the highest dpi and opening paint, switching to the pencil tool and drawing lines/circles. If it's dirty the jitter will be quite noticeable. To fix this just get a q-tip with isopropyl alcohol and rub the sensor. Usually the jitter isn't noticeable at low dpis but maybe it increases acceleration.

Lastly, the bigger shell is better than the precision one. Seriously

For some reason Logitech only now sells one fingertip mouse out of their dozens of gaming mice, and it's symmetrical (yet only has side buttons on the left so lefties can't use them anyway). Dumb... The vast majority of humans on planet earth who use a computer are fingertip mousers.

So someone made a straight clone of the G9/G9x with a centered 3360:

https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?&id=570009774507

Do note that there's no guarantee they'll make another batch so if you're tentative about spending the money I'd just go ahead and do so.  Found out about this weeks ago but it was no longer for sale, so I'm pretty happy they decided to do another run.

So I received that G9 clone today (which I'll call the G9c). First thing I'll mention is that interestingly, the G9c's mousefeet are actually smaller than the actual G9x. I don't have my original G9 anymore but I'm pretty sure they were the same size as the G9x, so for whatever reason they simply decided to make the feet smaller. Along the same lines, the weight tray is actually slightly different on the G9c too so they aren't interchangeable (though I'd be surprised if anyone here will be using that). Next up is that while the Precision grip fits on the G9c, for whatever reason it sits very slightly lower than it does on the G9x, which causes it to drag with the stock feet. I tried replacing them with some generic IME3.0 feet I had but it wasn't any better, so unless my unit is just out of tolerance then you'll need some slightly thicker feet if you want to use a grip.

As far as the stock DPI steps go the lowest DPI step is 800, with the next ones being 1200, 1600 and 2000 (didn't check further than that since I don't care, but there are 7 total). The taobao page does mention 200-12000 DPI so perhaps there is some software to customize the steps? Cable is not amazing, though I have become spoiled by paracords and wireless mice anyway. But luckily this thing uses the standard size connector that most mice have rather than the smaller one the G9x uses, making it easy to swap out with any cables you'd already have.

Complaints out of the way, I'll move onto what I like. First is that aside from the aforementioned dragging issue, the actual G9x precision grip fits just fine (I'd say it's more secure actually, but that could be just due to my G9x wearing with age). Mouse wheel is actually pretty decent and the middle click is way better than the actual G9x. There's a bit of pretravel on the LMB/RMB but not too bad, and the clicks are fine (some type of blue Huanos as you'll see in the pictures below). The side buttons and DPI buttons are streets ahead of the original G9x; instead of whatever the mushy buttons Logitech used, they feel and sound distinctly mechanical on the G9c.

Weight of the G9c without a shell or tray is 70g vs 78g for the G9x (95g for the G9c with the precision grip). Build quality is fine, not gonna win any awards but definitely better than some of the generic mice I've had. As for performance I haven't done any in-game testing but I don't notice anything inherent terrible just mucking about, but I've included some mousetester plots (frequency does look a bit wonky, but I'm not well versed in reading this stuff so maybe it's normal?).

That looks pretty well made, definitely not amateur.. cable shielded.. rotary encoder spring looks thick,

So, no obvious corner cutting.

One other thing I'll mention is that I did a bump test for input lag, and while those can be iffy, it's roughly 15-18ms slower than a G9x (which is a low lag mouse).  So it's among the lower tier gaming mice in that regard, but I lose quick-draws in games already anyway.

By the way, it actually does have software.  TBH I have no idea where the actual source is, but this is the link someone posted elsewhere and it checked out virus-wise.  Software is nothing fancy, but does the job:

Highly controversial ..

it wouldn't be fair unless you arduino up to both and test that way.

So, the question I have is: how the hell do I order this thing?  LOL  I've been pestering Logitech for YEARS to make a new one (along with a Mechanical G13) and they just continue to make more shoddy gamer mice that have zero ability to compete with the G9/G9X shape-wise.

can't get the software to work, says my mouse is disconnected. help

also as far as the input lag goes i'm getting the same result vs my g pro but i can't tell if it's because the switches are heavier.

doing reaction tests comparing the two as well gives a similar result but again it feels partly due to the fact that the click is heavier.

these stock feet are like, way faster than hyperglidez lol.

one major problem i'm having is the LOD though. :(

maybe i will sell them.
