Ordered a Keycool 22 - potential problem replacing 0 and 00?
« on: Sat, 01 June 2013, 15:25:01 »
I have a Keycool 22 number pad on the way, and I just noticed that instead of a 2x1 0 key, it has a 1x1 0 and a 1x1 00. I wonder if this is going to cause me headaches trying to find keycap replacement sets? Or if a 2x1 R1 would fit on there somehow...

You won't be able to place a 2x key there.  You will have trouble finding aftermarket key sets, but many of the group buys include keys that could work.  For example, the recent DSA Retro set could handle it easily.

Yeah, it looks like that set has a 1x1 zero key. I could always use a blank R1 for the "00". There's hope yet!

This particular Keycool model looks like a knockoff/clone of the standalone Filco number pad, so I'm surprised that Filco went with a somewhat unorthodox layout that's different from the number pad on the Majestouch. I guess they designed it with bean-counters in mind, versus people who just want a number pad for their TKL.

If you like Cherry doubleshot there is possible if you look hard enough. I will probably include 1x 0 and 00 keys in GMK buys when we get to the alphanumeric packs. May also include some of the more common 1x extra key like Backspace and so on in the nav packs.

Ok, so the number pad he actually sent me looks nothing like what was advertised:

Thanks?! I think? (I guess that takes care of the 0 and 00 issue...at least the switch type is correct)

Yeah it's a Leopold. Maybe he ran out of the Keycool and figured he'd upgrade me to the Leopold without telling me first. Or he just flat-out mixed up the order.

I'm not too bothered by it. This one arguably looks nicer paired up with a TKL anyway:

I'm going to have to show my ignorance here -- what does the key actually do? It literally causes two zeroes to be put into the buffer?

yes, it enters two 0s at once. Not a special character. Very useful for POS when the last two digits represent cents (or pence, etc), or spreadsheets in general.

I wish 00 keys were standard on numpads. They are popular on Chinese boards (as well as the big-ass enter).

Yup, I love them whenever I have to work with money.  I used to use an adding machine with one of those and, while it doesn't seem like much, it makes things so much faster and easier.
