[IC] GMK Coniferous R2 - Back in IC
« on: Wed, 24 January 2018, 19:01:55 »
Current kits 08/16/19

Base kit

Spacebars kit

Novelty kit

Bonsai kit

---

Update 5/20/18:
Alright, so here's the current plan for the set. Kits are soft locked as they appear below:

Base Kit - most likely will include some novelties as well

Spacebars Kit - typical normal and split spacebar compatibility

Bonsai Kit - Hiragana sublegend alphas

Monotone Mods Kit - U9 mods to be used with alphas to make a monotone/uniform set

As stated previously, there is a bit of non-compatibility with the U9 mods and the Bonsai in that they could not be used together without some other keys being needed, F1-F4, F9-F12, numpad numbers, spacebars. Really there's no good way around this, I'd need to add those keys to one of those kits, but I don't think that's fair to raise the price on either of those kits for the realistically very small demographic that would be using the two together.

If there is a significant number of people looking to use those two kits together, let me know and I can look into a solution if there is enough support to warrant it. Otherwise, I think it's better to leave it as is for the best chance of everything hitting the MOQs.

Here's my current list of what needs to be done for the set:

 - novelty design and approval
 - submit to gmk for mockups and quoting
 - talk to potential proxies
 - move into GB stage

At this time I'm still hoping for a launch sometime June and hoping that won't interfere with anything else.

Go ahead and let me know your thoughts and if I missed anything you think needs attention.

Poll for a U9 mods kit https://www.strawpoll.me/15375947

Bonsai Kit anyone?

No hard deadline at the moment, but the plan is for around May

Same kit with text-only mods?

Hmm, didn't notice that only the text rendered. The mods are still very much text + icon

I got lucky and got an extra slot from someone in the first round while it was still in progress. The part I really worried about was the spacebars just cause i seem to put a spot on my spacebars in the same place every time, and I want a clean one for photos.

R2 is meant to clean up the kit contents a little while also providing superior compatibility to the first round. It won't be happening until probably around May, so now is a good time to suggest kit adjustments.

Maybe now that people have seen the set in person and liked what they saw, they'll participate in R2? Shrug.

I got lucky and got an extra slot from someone in the first round while it was still in progress. The part I really worried about was the spacebars just cause i seem to put a spot on my spacebars in the same place every time, and I want a clean one for photos.

Which spacebar from the set would you use?

Thanks for your concern puddster, but not only did we clear MOQ by 14%, there was substantial demand for the set after the GB period and during the fulfillment period, as evidenced by conversation in this thread as well as other Coniferous topics. Additionally, as creator and runner of the set, I'm pretty free to run the set when I'd like.

Damn been looking for a nice green set, but the beige alphas kinda kill it for me. I will support any keyset that feeds my love of green though. This is going to be so much easier than R1 I'm sure, good luck with this donut and keep doing you man.

Well, not so much an IC but a statement from me "this is going to happen" but whatever. I guess it had to be done so that later on I can wait 1-2 weeks for my GB thread to be approved when I want to start the GB

If you report the thread and ask for approval that way, it gets done sooner. No need to be an ass about it though.

Donut, can you possibly hilight the changes from R1 to R2?

Easiest way is to compare kit contents:

R1

R2

Removals:
Mod-colored F1-F4, F9-F10
Accent-colored F5-F8
Accent-colored PrtSc, Scroll Lock, Pause
ISO @ ' key
Mod-colored blanks
Windows icon keys
Menu icon key
Dot-homing numpad5

Additions:
Alpha-colored esc
Stepped R3 control
Barred-homing numpad5
Proper 65/75% support
Code keys
Menu text key
R4 1.25u and 1.5u capslock
2u Shift
Make right alts into alt gr

My thought process in the kit re-design was cleaning up a lot of stuff that I felt was redundant or unnecessary and add stuff that I realized was really missing from R1. The goal is better compatibility than R1 while streamlining to keep the cost reasonable, which might still be difficult with the current state of EUR:USD. While R1 had a lot of stuff that I liked, I'm realizing now after almost another year of kit design experience that it was quite bloated for the amount of function that it gave.

At this point in time I'm still open to kit suggestions and do need some assistance with the ISO keys to make sure they're what they should be.

Never understood the appeal of alpha colored Escape. It throws off color balance and it has no business being alpha colored.

Bottom row CapsLock keys should be part of the "redundant or unnecessary" cleanup, it's 2018, CapsLock needs to die already, put it on a layer and be done with it.

I believe Puddsy's concern is valid, what's the rush? Of course there were people after the GB that cried for extras, but don't be fooled by a vocal minority. I'm not speaking against a R2, I'm just agreeing that doing it so soon is not a good move.

I agree on capslock and goofy escape.

I don't think there is any reason to rush, but it's also not like there are custom colors on this one.

What about running it with gaijin alphas and calling it bonzai :P

That is... an incredibly interesting idea. I personally heavily dislike green on my keyboards so I never considered Coniferous but I'd buy that because I love and have owned bonsai trees my whole life. What an interesting concept.

Not really rushing, like I said May is currently the estimated GB start, but that can easily be put back a month of whatever depending on what's happening then. For the capslock and escape, I don't really see a problem since at the moment they're adding maybe $2 to the set cost, probably less. Also, that bonsai idea is brilliant and now I'll have to work on figuring out a gaijin mock-up this weekend and putting it through IC.

I say ditch the following:
R4 caps lock
Stepped Control (does anyone that swaps control to caps lock use stepped?  I don't know, honest question)
Alpha colored ESC
1.25u R3 FN.  Is this only for 40/45% support?  Which is otherwise lacking so why just give 1 key.

I'd be interested in this, especially the Bonzai ideal if that's feasible. Either way I really do like this colorway & would've been in rd.1 if I had the extra cash at that time but I unfortunately did not.

Hello. Very much interested in this  :)

I have yet to own a GMK set. I saw a pic of a 65% with these and thought "YASSS that will be mine!", and a fellow member of the discord that I was on was selling their set which seemed lucky. Unfortunately my finances at this time do not permit such an expenditure, so the fact that this will come around again is very pleasing, as I especially like the green in this set.

Couple of questions: Will the deadline in May be for paying/placing the order? And will Mechboards.co.uk once again be a proxy for it? As that would be handy for me, living in the UK and all. I'm somewhat late to the mech keyboard game so I wasn't in the market for such a set at the time of the last groupbuy.

Thanks.

Agreed. Even tho the stepped ctrl could be fun, it would probably be hard to use another set on the same board with the correct caps.

As a Mac user I would MUCH appreciate R4 1.5u Code keys. Even better would be proper Cmd keys of course, but I guess the chances for that are slim. I guess those would see a lot more use than the R4 caps lock keys anyway.

Stepped Control user here. But not a big loss if there is no stepped Control: a nice-to-have, not a requirement.

Thanks.

May would most likely be the start date of the GB period, if that's when it happens. Also, there will indeed be Mechboards.co if he's up for it again, Taobao proxy via KP group, and most likely zFrontier proxying as well.

Not really rushing, like I said May is currently the estimated GB start, but that can easily be put back a month of whatever depending on what's happening then. For the capslock and escape, I don't really see a problem since at the moment they're adding maybe $2 to the set cost, probably less. Also, that bonsai idea is brilliant and now I'll have to work on figuring out a gaijin mock-up this weekend and putting it through IC.

Dude, yes! Please, I need more hiragana sublegends in my life.

I know this is a lotttt, but is there any way to add dark brown modifiers instead of dark grey, i feel like that would make it much more foresty
