Looking like someone famous is fun, especially when you can use it to **** with people.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

I had a little while where I was getting hit up by older women because I looked like James Dean. The unfortunate side was majority of them had really let themselves go and it wasn't good. No cool stories of hot milf/cougar action :(

Most Post Office employees are aliens, you know that.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

A simplified version of my day today:

I couldn't process some data today because I didn't have the correct labels.
My advisor didn't have time to give me the labels because he needed me to check something.
I couldn't work on that because one of our roughing pumps started making some dreadful noise.
I couldn't see the oil indicator because I needed a flashlight.
I couldn't use the flashlight because the batteries were dead.
I couldn't replace batteries because they had fused to the tube with so much corrosion.
I couldn't take the corroded bit apart because it had a custom wavelength LED I would damage.

and on and on and on

Later, fixing things involving getting a piece of lye stuck under my fingernail, cycling the UHV pumps, and putting on 2.3 miles just trying to find a single important piece of glassware - my advisor comes and asks if I had that data processed for him to look at.

Is it bad that I know who James Dean is and don't know who's this Tatum or whatever?
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

those thing are loud - my ears are ringing in the silence!

It is unbelievable that insects can make that kind of sound with organic appendages not much larger than a fingernail, when modern technology has to employ a lot of components in a speaker.

By the way, did you get those big speakers working?

Still waiting for the amp to be delivered.  Any day now ...
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

The heat is bothering me. Australia is too hot (42ºC last week, so that's 107ºF)

On the topic of looking like movie stars. Apparently I look like a young Bill Murray. At first this bothered me but then I started quoting him all the time and its funny now. I don't look like him though

I was in the kitchen at work today waiting for the kettle to boil.

I was standing right back against the wall, almost hiding behind the door.

For reasons the lights were off.

I happened to glance up at the ceiling, specifically at where one of the light fittings is.

Most of the ceiling lights have round reflective things to throw more light downwards, but this particular light is missing its reflective thing, allowing for a view into the ceiling space (we have one of those lowered ceilings).

There was a weird reddish light up there, probably just from light reflecting up from another light fitting in an adjacent room.

But for a few moments I was able to indulge in the fantasy that there was a secret division at work that had a hidden control room in the ceiling and was engaged in covert surveillance.

Then I realised that the only thing they would be surveilling is, well, me and the guys.

Fortunately the kettle finished boiling, and I was able to extract the requisite quantity of water and depart.

I don't even know if that bothers me, but I couldn't think of anywhere else to put it.

I don't even know if that bothers me,

Watch the movie "Brazil" again.

Coworkers who wait until the day before a due date and request things that typically require a few days to finish.

Also bosses who won't ask for things directly but text coworkers who aren't even here who then text me the request.
