Dear Geekhackers:

This is kingnestea from Percent studio, and I'm here to introduce our latest project Skog-reboot.

Some words

As the first keyboard designed by Percent studio, Skog is not that wide spread as the Canoe.
It was late 2019 when we had the idea to give this iconic board a refresh.

After more than 10 revisions, we have finally come to a design that meets our standard and obsession for details.
Long story short, let's get into the details.

Key features

  • Programmable rotary encoder above the arrow cluster
  • RGB led strip above the arrow cluster
  • Solderable PCB and Hot-swap PCB up to choice
  • QMK/VIA PCB
  • Bluetooth 4.2
  • Isolated gasket mount
  • Dampener between plate and PCB
  • Adjustable typing angle from 5.8° to 6.8°
  • 1.5mm aluminum/FR4 plate

The case

The case will be anodised/powder coating/cerakote/electrophoresis 6063 aluminum depending on colour.
As a standard approach, we will provide colour combo's picked by us during the GB phase.
Different from the previous Percent studio GBs, this time we will provide Pantone colour code or colour samples for each colour available.

Available colour combo is tbd at the moment, we will probably put up a poll for this at a later stage.

Plate and PCB

At Percent studio, we agree that besides aesthetics, typing experience is not negligible.
We have added gaskets to the Canoe gen 2 and feedback is very positive.
This time, we are doing fully isolated gaskets to enhance this.
The keyboard kit will also come with a silicon dampener between the plate and PCB and a foam dampener between the PCB and bottom case, this together with the 1.5mm plate to reduce the hollow sounding.
FR4 will also be provided as material of the plate.

Old design:

More

This time, we will continue to provide Bluetooth options.
4 PCB options will be available during the GB phase.
  • non-Bluetooth & Solderable
  • non-Bluetooth & Hot-swap
  • Bluetooth & Solderable
  • Bluetooth & Hot-swap

The bluetooth function will be provided by a daughter board.
To avoid shipping issues, we are using a Nokia BL5C battery, which is easily accessible worldwide.
This also means the keyboard kit will not come with a battery if you choose the bluetooth option.

Next to the iconic RGB led strip, we are adding a rotary encoder above the arrow cluster to the Skog-reboot.
It will be programmable with QMK/VIA.

Please see below for supported layouts.

Solderable PCB:

Hot-swap PCB:

Group buy

If you browse zFrontier regularly, you will probably be aware of this board.
The Chinese GB is running from Sep. 8th to 11th.
We encourage you to avoid the Chinese GB and wait for the international GB to avoid possible communication and shipping problems.

The international GB will launch once we think it is ready and will be hosted on our website https://percent.studio/

Please also join our Discord to stay tuned! https://discord.gg/HZkuG2u

Design contest

We have launched a design contest on zFrontier for the rotary dial knob and received 18 creative designs in only ONE week!
We are also doing this with you Geekhackers!
The model of the rotary dial knob will be shared in coming days.
I'll update how you can submit your work.
After the defined window of submission, we will put up a poll.
Winner who has the most votes will receive a Skog-reboot kit up to your choice and your design will be provided as option during the GB phase and probably later in stock on our webshop.
There will also be rewards for all participants of this contest.

For more renders and the zFrontier design contest, please check out our IC post on zFrontier. It is in Chinese though. https://www.zfrontier.com/app/flow/DrmOJg6B05lZ

Thank you for your time and specially to those who has supported Percent studio with the previous projects!
You are the reason why we are still doing this!
Keep safe

Seeing those design sketches at the beginning of the IC is something really refreshing that I haven't really seen in keyboards before - love the thoroughness of the design process being applied here.

Looking forward to that contest you mentioned too, will definitely give it a shot myself.

We encourage you to avoid the Chinese GB and wait for the international GB to avoid possible communication and shipping problems.

The international GB will launch once we think it is ready and will be hosted on our website https://percent.studio/
...

Why do you run GBs for the Chinese market first? Do your Chinese buyers have to accept a lower level of quality assurance? Or do we have to accept some nationalistic favouritism? This is probably a false dichotomy, I genuinely don't understand.

There are certain reasons why Chinese and Korean makers separate their domestic GBs from international GBs, e.g. ordering, shipping etc.
Chinese GBs are held mostly on Taobao and communicated on QQ rather than the GBs for western community are mostly held on shopify based webshops and communicated through e-mails or Discord.
Payment method is also totally different.
It is also not necessary that the Chinese GB will receive less qualitative product than the international GB, we will certainly merge the feedback we receive from this IC to the end product both for the Chinese GB and the international GB.
Knowing that the IC on zFrontier is done by now and the Chinese community has followed the development of Skog-reboot from months ago.
I do think running the Chinese GB first as we usually do is reasonable.

Will it support split backspace?

Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk

I don't see why not...I'll ask them to add this in the next revision of renders.
Would also be interested in split backspace.

The Chinese GB is running from Sep. 8th to 11th.
We encourage you to avoid the Chinese GB and wait for the international GB to avoid possible communication and shipping problems.

The international GB will launch once we think it is ready and will be hosted on our website https://percent.studio/
...

Why do you run GBs for the Chinese market first? Do your Chinese buyers have to accept a lower level of quality assurance? Or do we have to accept some nationalistic favouritism? This is probably a false dichotomy, I genuinely don't understand.

That's offensive man. It's because you probably never ran a business. Is it a must for a small scale business to go international at all stages of their business? Let alone it's an unlimited GB. Imagine the scale it would be if they put this out globally, especially for a well designed product like this. They are doing the smart thing by pushing out in stages for better QC not the other way around. I don't understand how you can tie that to favouritism.

Just FYI (not sure this has been posted before), but this webpage by percent provides an excellent deep dive on the design and the options currently available in the Chinese group buy: https://percent-studio.com/Skog-reboot

Will the Casio colorway be part of the international group-buy? I'm based in the USA and am totally in (I will be getting the Skog-reboot not matter what, but want the Casio very much).

Since the Casio is limited, how will you guys handle the process of picking that colorway? Premium pricing or raffle/lottery? (I'm hoping for just paying extra or something). How will we select the Casio colorway in the group buy?

Also, will there be other knobs available or just the standard and the casio?

Casio will be part of the int'l GB, limited though. It will be FCFS and the same price as the others.
Additional knobs will also be available, looking to do 1-2 knobs from the zFrontier contest and 1-2 from the Geekhack contest.

Submitted the PRK (Percent Rotary Knob)

I'm not a fan of brand logo on the top, but in this case i find your logo perfect for the knob, where the bottom of the branch of the logo is the pointer of the rotary knob :)  (also consider that the knob is in fact very small)

There are 2 versions of it, the difference is just the flat vs angled leg of the "pointer" (the bottom of the branch)

Edit (3 more renders from different angles):

I call it the Grippe knob, designed with ridges so it's grippy enough for use with one finger.

... so anyways, I was told I could only submit one design. But I already made two, so I figured I might as well share it here anyway.

I have a submission for the knobs as well. I can't do fancy renders like you guys, so I did my best drawing my ideas.

And a description of my idea:

Originally, I had the idea of making artisan "caps" for the rotary encoder. I drew a few fun designs, but I know that it would be hard to implement in a mass scale. While drawing the designs on the left, however, I had the idea of "what if we made a rotary knob that had a standard mx shaped stem on it?".

I don't know the dimensions of a rotary encoder, so there would have to probably some modifications (eg. making the knob taller), but the idea is to have an mx stem mount on the knob, so you can attach your own artisan keycaps or even make your own traditionally shaped knob with an mx mount.

Hope you like my doodles! :)

Submission for rotary knob - Triskelion Rotary Knob. Not an original design, however, I thought one of the many meanings of the symbol - rebirth - fit well with the Skog-reboot. It's an ancient Celtic symbol (feel free to look it up). Excuse my poor sketch (symbol would be etched in, similar to other user's design), but I can't 3D model anything (no doubt it could be made better). For what it's worth, I like the one above using the studio logo - super well done.

Gregcoder!! Though as a coder, I would love it if we could have a rubber duck on the knob: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber_duck_debugging

Not a designer, can't draw well, someone draw a duck on the knob?

Will wait for the GB to start

I submitted "The Droplet" knob design.

I noticed that in the original renders, the knob looked small, squished, and close to the TKL cluster. As I tried to mimic the rotation of such a knob by holding it on the sides, I noticed that I would bump into the keycaps and be unable to complete a full rotation. So, my design takes into consideration the: "if you can't rotate it from the sides, you must rotate it from the top." The namesake of the knob comes from the shape of the indent at the top. The droplet shape, purposely larger and more indented on one side, allows the user's finger to rotate the knob from above as the finger settles in the concave region away from the center of rotation. This allows for quick and continuous one fingered use. A tactile bump is also included on the wider side of the indent so that someone doesn't accidentally try to use the narrower/shallower side of the indent. This knob has the same proportional height as the file included, but takes the cylinder all the way up to the top height, where there is a slight chamfer on the edges.
I did try to model the knob on a computer, but I am only slightly proficient in tinkercad, which is why the files are far from perfect (indent depth, seams).

Very nice board! Really like the positioning of the knob :)

Here is my design submission as emailed:

Design name: Macaron Knob (because the top looks like a macaron :D)

Design concept: The design is primarily driven by 2 key elements. Firstly, the unique 2-stepped curved edge of the SKOG which has been incorporated into the knob. Secondly, the curved grooves on the underside of the SKOG which is vertically translated onto the knob to provide grip for turning. If desired, the percent studio logo can be engraved on the top, but I prefer it clean.

Man if the Gregcoder was an option I would beg for greg

Anyways, here is my submission. I kept the design simple since the knob is fairly small. This is my first time rendering, so I messed around with some colors and lighting while I was at it.

Glad I saw this contest before deadline and also that this keyboard is coming back!
I submitted the design Amp Dial which I based on the most comfortable type of knobs I tried on old amplifiers. Besides comfortable use I was aiming for it to be simple to produce, so only one colour and not too complicated shapes. The contest triggered my interest in modeling and rendering, so this are my first renders.

I've been really enjoying everybody's submissions and decided to design a fun, colorful knob too.

Design Name: The Jelly Knob

Inspiration: A Jelly Fruit Cake. I was eating one the other day and decided that it'll be fun to see one used as a knob too.

Fun meets Function: Slot cuts were made on the outer circumference of the knob to offer the end-user a form of grip, while the indent on the top of the knob was inserted to offer a "cupping" function to the knob, should the knob ever be used to rotate using one finger. Credits goes to @keystothelaunch above for their tear-drop idea, which led to this knob's inspiration.

Other than that, I'm really excited for this board to come into fruition! :thumb:

I'm no artiste exactly, but I had a lot of fun with coming up with this. All the designs I've seen posted here and in the Discord have been awesome!

Here is my entry I dusted off my tablet for!

I wanted the crown to be a shiny, brilliant metal, and then the top to be a more satin finish (brushed aluminium for example?). I toyed with the idea of adding a simple "pearl" to use as an indicator, but realized I'm not sure exactly what kind of rotary encoder it's going to be. And to be fair it also looked horrendous, ehehe.

Here it is on the keyboard!

Hello,

I submitted my design, Lightning Rebolt.

The lightning bolt idea came from reboot's synonyms: restart and renew. A jolt of electricity giving life to a project that's both exciting and nostalgic, new yet familiar.
Lightning Bolt + Reboot = Lightning Rebolt  :D

The one thing I would change and didn't have time to do is the color. I would like it to be that deep red metallic finish shown on the "X" knob in the original post's renders.

The Geekhack community has been an amazing place since I discovered it just a few months ago. Joy is only complete when shared and that's exactly what this community has done for me. In full transparency, I reached out for help on Fiverr to get a more professionally done rendering of my basic MS Paint skills by <ranganaghg> so shout out to him for his help!

Very excited for this GB and best wishes to Percent Studio and all the rotary knob creators! :thumb:

Hello, I submitted my design via email with a longer introduction but due to time constrictions and the UK time just hitting 12AM, I present to you the "Free the nipple" design. It is easily gripped and inspires us with fond memories of old laptops ;) with the nipple mouse in the middle of the keyboard.

First time using 3d software so don't be harsh please.

I wish everyone good luck in the contest as well as good luck to Percent Studios with another crazy design and crazy sales numbers.

Desert looks amazing.  I can't wait to order my TKL Desert with FR4 and get it built.

FR4 plates will not be available with the GB, it will be provided as in-stock item later. :-[
