What is Project Ravello?
« on: Sat, 12 July 2014, 17:44:45 »
Project Ravello is a 4 button keyboard that is programmable to the layman

70625-070627-1

Specs:
  • ATMEGA16u2 Chip
  • 7x24 LED Matrix
  • 4 Cherry MX Switches
  • Onboard "Program" pushbutton
  • 6 Expansion Ports
  • Mini USB Connector
Operation:
Upon plugging in the card will scroll the TechKeys robot logo, and then go to the default screen.  Upon holding the program button for 1 second, the card will request you to select a key to program.  After selecting a key, the user may through the alphabet using up and down and commit or delete a character by pressing left or right.  The program button may be tapped to flip from lower case, upper case, number/symbol, and special characters.  When the macro is complete, pressing and holding program button for 1 second returns to the main screen.  Upon pressing the programmed key, the macro will be outputted to the connected PC.

Easter Eggs:
There will be easter eggs in the firmware ranging from Techkeys Coupon Codes to a full game of Tetris.

Storage:
The firmware leverages the chips EEPROM storage so that all programmed macros, will persist even after the card is unplugged and plugged back in.

Firmware:
The firmware will be open source, and users are encouraged to enhance or write their own software for the card.  Graphic functions exist for drawing characters, pixels, boxes, and even graphics (Linux script will convert a png to hex)

Ideas:
  • Persistence of Motion
  • Clock / Alarm / Timer
  • Media Controller
  • GAMES

I guess you could do up the leads from the USB power wires. with some wire. I'm pretty sure the PCB would draw power from anything that it could.

I use to live in Viareggio back in 1991 for six months and it was a piece of paradise.  Still miss it immensely, especially the people who simply let you enjoy the place without any interruption  8) .

Nope - I would suggest plate mounting the switches if you are looking to make a case.  Or get creative with some sort of slot mounting.

I just had a moment of pure excitement, while testing the final revision of the software. I programmed a key through the interface, to type in a username, press tab, type in the password, and hit enter.

When I fired the macro it was the fastest login ever

Sorry for the delay folks...I have had a severe lack of free time lately.  I think I am going to forgo the video for the time being and release the cards first.

I might actually do a contest for anyone interested in producing a short demonstration video.

Babies (and children in general) tend to suck money away from your keyboard hobby

I'm experiencing an odd bug and I'm not sure if it's software or hardware (the switches I used) related.

After the card is powered up and functioning for some time, I lose the functionality of the left and right switches entirely.  It does not appear that the switches themselves are causing the issue, as it goes from working 100% of the time to 0% of the time.  Then, leaving the card in place on the table so I'm not jostling anything around, I unplug the card from the computer and re-plug it in.  Every switch functions properly.

i3oiler, have you experienced this at all on your cards?  Could it be caused by pushing the buttons is quick succession?  I have them programmed to up, left, down, right for a game.  Is this simple and non-macro keycode causing issues?

Anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks!  I can also lose functionality of the other two switches, it just seems to be less common.  Most common is the left switch.

Also, if you fix this bug and we reflash will we lose the easter egg functionality?  I was really looking forward to those, but I also want to get rid of the bugs.

I just started soldering today (complete noob) and put mine together. I can't figure out why the middle two keys (up and down or PD4 and PD5) aren't working! I resoldered them both and still nothing. Pics:

More

Did I damage something? Left and right work like a charm.

EDIT: Nevermind! What are the chances those two black switches were ****? I got them 2 years ago from another member that harvested them. Those two I resoldered 3 times. Still didn't work. Tried two other switches and now it works like a charm!

Still can't figure out how to get the tetris egg.

Also, I am wondering if you can program a combination of key presses (i.e. ctrl + shift + a) as this is typically how I map hotkeys for programs. I've noticed that in the special keys there are symbols and symbols with a _ under them that signify that the key is being held however when you follow up a _ special key with another special key you can't select a _ from that list.

So I just got mine yesterday. Been having some fun with it :)

Is there a way to have a delay between key-presses? ( like if waiting for a program to launch wait 500ms )
Where can we find the source code? It would be fun to add a little more, key combos for added macros could be fun.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I came to this thread looking for advice on how to program this card.  Did find much beyond the OP, but I did figure out the secret Tetris mode.

You're about the first one to have admitted that!

First to admit finding Tetris?

Yes.

I admitted to it awhile ago.  :P  I also found a bug in the sprites that I reported back.  :D  (sorry i3oiler, I blew your cover! :-[ )

"... about the first", said Rowdy, giving himself a way out of that one ;)
