Noppoo Choc Mini
« on: Wed, 17 November 2010, 23:45:50 »
So the Noppoo Choc Mini is released and all over TaoBao, I didn't want to crowd the KBC 40 thread with this so I started a separate one.  The auction I read said you can get these in MX Black, GREEN or Tea (Brown) - What the heck is green?  Is it like the Greens you'd find under some MX blue keyboard's spacebars?  They were like a Blue but heavier.  Or did google translate wrong and they really mean Blue?

Green is what they call blue.

It's ~$60. Probably ~$80-$90 after shipping to get it to the use.

Not bad at all. Too bad I'm waiting for the KBC/Ducky 40%

Someone should see if they can find a method to buy direct.

If green is blue, then they must drink blue tea.  But then what would "tea" axis mean?

So back to this keyboard. Looking at the layout, it seems great for anyone who wants a very compact layout without having to deal with key layers for standard functions.

Nice sized right shift
Nice arrow cluster

That media and tenkey layer seems like nice extras.

Rip, think we could get a section in the wiki for tenkeyless boards and mini boards?

I'm starting to think i may want a tenkeyless or mini/84/87 but im not sure what boards i have to choose from.

I checked the wiki but i couldn't really find a list.

Also, i really like the look of this Choc mini board.  I assume its not available in the states yet?

Agreed.  I'm a software developer and all the commonly-used keys are in pretty much the the usual locations, with the rest mapped logically.  Looks like it saves a couple of keys worth of width as compared to the Filco 87-key.

I'd probably buy one of these if they were available in Canada.

prices of shipping gone higher

That's a bit ambiguous.  Shipping to where?  What currency?  And what's the 25 Euro bit?

I'm looking for a price in USD including shipping to Canada.  CeeSA is looking for a price including shipping to Germany.

Lastly, how would payment be arranged?  Paypal?

CeSa knows the price.

you shouldn;t even know where germany is or even know where Europe is if u dont know the euro..

I am only taking one order so first come first serve.

I am not going to do this anymore, since 1 i will lose money since the course of the chinese renminbi has gone back, first it  was 1 euro= 9.20
now it is 8,87.

or ofcourse you pay more but it isn't worth it then anymore..

I'll buy one of these (in "tea") from whoever is willing to mass order/import/whatever.

I got a quotation from Obook and the potential savings from a group buy are really quite minimal, at least if you choose airmail. If you factor in reshipment costs from the main buyer to the other group members, and the double-dipping in Paypal fees, there may well be no savings at all.

So I went ahead and ordered one for myself, with blues. We'll see if things actually work out, or if the order gets mysteriously canceled as some other forum members seem to have experienced.

(Also, I noticed that obook's commission is actually 22.5% for keyboards. The commission rate of 15% only applies to a limited class of goods.)

Negidaku, would you be so kind as to tell me the link you asked obook to purchase from?  there are so many on taobao..  Would you also be willing to share what the total cost was shipped to you? (I assume you are in the US?)

Thanks.

Ouch 22% for keyboards? wtf!

Any other reliable buying services that charge less than this?

I tried to get a quote from another one that supposedly charges 10%, but I never heard back from them.

Just google taobao buying agent and inquire at a bunch.

The quote from Obook was:

Out-of-pocket expenses $62.96  (keyboard)

Freight charge $9.89 (airmail to USA)
Commission $14.17
Paypal fee $3.37

22.5% commission is pretty pricey, but since the keyboard is relatively cheap to start with, the total commission paid doesn't seem terribly unfair in this instance.

As for which link I used, some of the sellers list a choice of switch type, and some only list a single switch type. To minimize confusion, I randomly picked a cheap listing that was for blues only and had a good seller rating:

http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=8335258075

However, Obook did some looking around and switched to a different seller for the same price, because of better location and free delivery:

http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=8442058132

Note that this new seller offers a choice of switch types, leading to the possibility of confusion. The person I corresponded with at Obook didn't seem to have prior knowledge of Cherry switch types, so I had some e-mail back and forth with them to make sure they understood to order blues, and how to tell if the switch was blue or not (without removing a keycap). Hopefully nothing will get screwed up. If you choose to order browns or something, good luck explaining what those are like. :)

unholy mixed can sometimes be a good thing. I'm really liking Blacks on the modifiers and browns on the typing area. Browns and blacks work good together, but they should never interact with Blues. (Yes, I am racist.)

I just registered a taobao account so I could ask the seller a question. Hopefully I will get a positive response from the dealer. If so I will let you guys know and I may arrange a group purchase. I'm still holding out hope for the KBC 40%.

my previous experience with the TAO of BAO involved a real CHINA(wo)man with an online bank payment thingy-ma-jiggy. I think taobao takes Alipay but it would really help if you had a real CHINAperson to help you out as the checkout process is equally as challenging as ordering your item. It's no PCHOME.

Just got a quote from Obook, which is a bit more than negidaku's since I want brown switches:

Freight charge 9.90
Out-of-pocket expenses 75.05
Commission 16.89
Paypal receiving fee 3.89
Total 105.73

I'm wondering how much a group buy would save over this.

9.90 USD for freight is pretty good, i'm assuming this is non EMS?

It boils down to, who is willing to do the same amount of work for less or no money. Any savings on that part is going to get padded on again when the boards are shipped out again... so I too would like to know how we can save some money and buy some interesting boards from the CHINA-town.

Dibs here.  May 2011? Why so far in advance?

By then we'll know if it really has nopoo, and hopefully all the bugs are worked out and so i don't have to pay for shipping.

I'm really liking the look of the keyboard.  Unobtrusive legends, dusty charcoal colour, good compact layout, built-in numberpad.

I just wish I could order one in North America.
Daily drivers are:
Microsoft Natural (the original, and still going strong)
Microsoft Natural Elite

Has anyone found a better way for US residents to buy these yet?

The keyboard I ordered is finally in Obook's hands, after substantial delays. They have revised the freight charge upward because it is too heavy to be sent by air mail. I can't say I'm terribly pleased about that development, but I suppose these are the risks one runs when ordering from China.

The quoted shipping weight is 1.15 kg.

The layout seems great except for one thing. It would be much better if it was del/pause/pgup/pgdn instead of pause/pgup/pgdn/del. Del would be next to backspace instead of far away and pgup/pgdn would be closer to the arrow keys.
