I preordered because I really want to see soft keycaps be made and tested, it's a new material so testing and funding are required.

Just trust me with this, wait until you see the final images properly photographed or the hold the final product

At plain sight it's not intrusive at all. The silicone keycap will be slightly translucent so, you'd see it if you look it with magnification or another aid. The different colors of the epoxy putties highlights the contrast, and that wouldn't happen with a more or less plain color.

The photos are taken under a hard light, with a good macro lens, and when resizing the image down it gets additionally sharpened.
In a small scale such as this, it's advisable to compensate a bit the texture, because if it were realistically scaled down, a important portion would get lost in perception without using a magnifier.

Boring update:

I've been cleaning little dents in the sculpts with magnification, as I the prototypes were sculpted without loupes, defining edges, beveling some corners, rounding others, and making the bases as thick walled as I can. Testing fitting issues, etc.

Regarding reinforcing the base of the silicone keycaps: I bought several type of fiberglass composites, which haven't had the adhesion to the silicone I was aiming to. However, I do have some solutions on the way as I've been talking to different providers from past week, that are lengthy to explain. It involves getting the fillers to stick only to the base part, to keep the sculpt wobbly, and the stem integrity. Remember silicone only sticks to itself.

The basic alternatives were to buy fillers pretreated with an special adhesive (tried that with bad results), treating them myself (I'm in the middle of getting the adhesive), or lastly, as I came across with a self priming silicone (gonna try that this week), so it'd adhere to substrates of certain type without extra effort and could be tinted in the same coloring than the body.

I wanna sort out the problem of having one solid silicone keycap and go as further as I can with it.

Boring update 2:

So, It's set. I couldn't find any commercially available option for silicones that resist wear in a day to day basis for the stem, and I'd be making it myself.

My own formula of silicone composite material for the base of the keycap will have a matrix structure set by a low viscosity polyvinyl siloxane, abrasive and tear strength proportioned by a mix of nanometric amorphous and micrometric inorganic fillers, a coupling agent and maybe a metallic oxide to disperse light evenly.

I'll be assuming the costs involved, that have surpassed what I managed to gather with the preorders, but that would mean the best possible, long lasting, flexible keycaps ever made. For the boobiecaps and future projects.

It's super happening, and in a best shape than before, but my initial timing estimates are compromised. They could still be shipping from late january onwards, and regular orders will open only after I test everything thoroughly.

After doing some tests, I wasn't confident on the abrasive and tear strength of the best and hardest silicone I bought, so I decided to make my own reinforced syloxane composite, that'll be more like a regular plastic in hardness.

Then I tested fillers that didn't work, had to see why they failed and correct that.

Afterwards, I had to order more materials and talk to local chemical providers in order to check what's feasible (that took me most of this week). And before going further, I've got to revise my safety equipment.

The polyurethane foam are easier to do. The rigid keycaps are easy piece. Full addition cure silicone pieces are the complication, but what will look the best, and have the highest durability in time.

Those are a stretch fabric (polyamide or polyproilene) over a gel or foam, like some mousepad cushions. Some are just poluyrethane foam stress balls or even silicone.

- Did a prototype mold with silicone putty to test Polyurethane foam adhesion to polyurethane resin. They adhere strongly, however I kept testing the PU foam I'm not convinced of the final result as the foam collapses partially compressing it and the definition of detail is not optimal (maybe it's something related to improper mixing, and waiting time before demolding and not inherent to the PU foam itself).

- final silicone materials arrived. I'll begin doing the silicone keycaps next week. Gotta prepare the molds and receive some appropriate respirator filters yet.

- Most likely I'll do all the preorders in silicone, and not PU foam, until I find one that I like (self skinning maybe).
