A limited number of full brass bases are being produced, more on this before the GB date.

Please ask any questions you have, or if you have any special requests I'm all ears here, PM or Discord, it's been a long road to get to this stage solo, I can't wait to get these boards into people's hands.
I encourage you to join my Discord Discord invite: https://discord.gg/dDjx7q3 (https://discord.gg/dDjx7q3) for live discussion and up to the second information, I will, of course, be keeping this thread updated too.

Thank you... all...  yes, even you Mr negative :D

Hello everyone!

So this has probably taken a bit too long, but I am finally updating this IC to better inform potential participants, and try and convey my plans for this board.

Right off the bat, let's address the name change. I had several people note that V90 is also the name of a Volvo Estate car, and while I’m sure it’s a great car, I thought it best to go with something else, after careful consideration and tossing many coins, I give you the Virgo, hopefully, the first of many boards from FLX <--- That’s me  ;D .

The seed of an idea.

This board was originally an idea I had after seeing the EM7 and Alice type layouts, a layout that I have owned, and didn’t really get along with, so I looked to change things to suit my own tastes.

This is the first “Ergonomic’ keyboard I used, and I used it 8 hours a day 5 days a week for about 3 years. It was awful, but it was super comfortable, so comfortable that it took me a little while before I could go back to a standard layout.
(https://i.imgur.com/IO2PYmV.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/IO2PYmV.jpg)

So I started looking for a board that would suit my needs other than LZ’s Ergo, which is near impossible to source on the aftermarket, there was nothing else in the custom keyboard community that came close to filling this void for me. I set about designing it for myself, with a view that I would get one made for me and that’s that. Three months later and after 13 iterations on the design, the Virgo came to be.

(https://i.imgur.com/XKrOa3K.png) (https://i.imgur.com/XKrOa3K.png)

Testing out Geekhack.

Being proud of the board I had designed and with the encouragement of some friend in the community, I put my first, rather lacklustre interest check on here, to see if there was any appetite from anyone else for a board like this.

In 24 hours I had 200+ people register an interest, including some big names in the community who I respect and who’s work I have admired for years.

I had to run it.

The Keyboard. Here is a 3D turntable viewer of the board...

Layouts.

The following layouts are supported (as requested).

What's in the kit.The standard kit will include:There will be extra PCB's and plates available at time of purchase too.

(https://i.imgur.com/TnYb1Z7.png) (https://i.imgur.com/TnYb1Z7.png)

Plate files and PCB design will be made public after the group buy has been fulfilled, so hopefully one of my boards never becomes an un-used ornament because a PCB dies.

I will update this section as I go if required…

Colours.

So my original plan was to keep to a single colourway and that’s that, however, due to high demand (or outrage in some cases) I have agreed a deal with the manufacturer to allow a small number of colour options for each part I’ve yet to finalise these colours (I need your help), but should you take part in the GB, you will get to pick the colour of your top housing, Base and Plate separately to get the look you desire.

Below are a few renders of colour schemes to get you thinking.

Your board needs you.Interest check google form... let me know if your interested to join the GB.

Plate material check.. Other plate materials may or may not be available in the group buy, but please let me know which you would like to see by default in the kit.

More surveys coming, please come back later and help me out.

Also, feel free to join my Discord, it's just been set up, so it may be quiet for a few days, but I'll use it to keep people up to date the progress reports and other news.

Nothing is final till the GB starts…

Thank you in advance for your time.

Group buy Information.

My initial prototype is expected imminently, barring any major issues or re-works being required then I see no reason to hold off too long on the GB.

Nope…  :(

Google form added.

https://forms.gle/D16WhXbnhctswmj28

Note, this is most likely to be a fairly small run of boards when it gets made. I'm not sure if were talking FCFS, raffle or possibly invites, if it does end up being an invite board, then I will be using this form as a guide for who is actually interested and not just planning to flip, so please fill it out, it may give you a better chance of getting a board.   :thumb:

This is actually very important so yes.

Quick and dirty render of the ISO layout (ANSI users are also supported).

that's an LZ Ergo?

I'm quite open about my love for the LZ ERGO in the top post, this is also very different in design and layout (and split angle) , I tried several different case shapes to accommodate the layout of straight split keys and none look as good as the shallow V shape so I just went with it.

If its not for you, fine, but it's not meant as a direct copy or a replacement for LZ's board.

Shall I start linking the hundreds of TKL's, 60's and 65% boards that share a shape?

Post by: MajorKoos on Wed, 02 October 2019, 08:12:17
I've got a weak spot for Ergos so count me in.
I love what you've done to get rid of the seam.

I have 2 small requests:
Winkey!  I need that key.  Will the PCB allow me to use 2 x 1.25u next to the space rather than a 1u and 1.5u like the picture?
The blocker is in the perfect spot - that key is a PITA to reach on the LZ ergo.

Could you flatten out this bottom edge a little bit (kinda like the LZ Ergo but not as big)?
Speaking from experience with my LZ Ergos that flat edge makes for a good reference point when aligning everything for an optimal typing position.

If there's any possibility for plate thickness options, might I suggest a 5mm plate?

LZ Ergo has been my primary driver at work for the last 2 years and on multiple occasions I've considered using my extra Ergo PCB and designing my own case/plate around it.  Here are some thoughts.  They are my opinion and I do not claim to speak for others!

All that said, I like what I see.  The Alt keys are the only deal breaker (again, just speaking for myself).

LZ Ergo has been my primary driver at work for the last 2 years and on multiple occasions I've considered using my extra Ergo PCB and designing my own case/plate around it.  Here are some thoughts.  They are my opinion and I do not claim to speak for others!

Layout/usability:
 • Consider increasing the split angle, or increasing the horizontal spacing between the left and right clusters.  Compared to the Microsoft Natural and the Cherry MX5000, the LZ Ergo already has the smallest separation.  Individual users vary, but I could use a bigger split.
 • Consider putting the Alt keys next to the spacebar, similar to the LZ Ergo.  Not having to curl my thumbs as much is one of the things I love about the Ergo.
 • I don't see Lock key indicators in the render.  I assume there are plans to add some?
 • I like the 7 degree incline.
 • USB via a daughterboard is a great idea.  The USB port is probably the most fragile component on most custom boards.  Being able to replace that component without desoldering an entire board is something I appreciate :)

Aesthetics:
 • I like the corners.
 • I like the F-key layout more than the Ergo.  Have you considered slightly increased horizontal spacing?  That F5 key is a little awkward.  Not sure that level of isolation is necessary.
 • I don't like the way the top shell covers the bottom.  I'm not a fan of the way the LZ Ergo handles it either.  I'd rather have a seam line than distinctively different tops and bottoms.
 • Consider offering anodized plates if you go with aluminum.  I hate the reflective silver showing up in the gaps between my keys on my black Ergo (with BoW caps).

All that said, I like what I see.  The Alt keys are the only deal breaker (again, just speaking for myself).

If a bigger split happened, that would be cool. This really got me thinking about negative space on keyboards. I don't really have many dealbreakers on either list.

Who else hits the alt key via curling their middle finger?

negative space = more alu = bigger = costs more

not that cost is really a barrier for people anymore

Very interesting, I was just thinking about a very similar layout during the past few days. TKLs have always been my favorite layout by far. I have a soft spot for sky blue and crimson red colors. If either one of those is an option then I see nothing stopping me from getting one.

I used an ergo keyboard years ago, and I'm not sure I got 100% used to it, but if I want to go with the trend and give one a try, this will probably be the one I go with.  I like the addition of the tkl keys, and I prefer the bottom row to the bottom row on the Alice.  I like the blockers, and the fact that they're the same size, without the big gap and logo on the right.

WOW... OK quick update,

I've had over 100 people show interest in less than 48 hours so this will be going ahead, I'll spend some time this weekend on a fuller interest check to fill out details more.

a few FAQ answers in the mean time.

Q: Will the PCB be QMK / VIA compatible.

A: There is no reason it shouldn't be possible, I'm using a fairly standard ATMEGA32U4 controller, I'm not 100% sure how to make it happen but I will reach out to some people for help in the coming days.

Q: Support for Split Backspace / Split Shift etc..?

A: The plates and PCB's will support split backspace and split right shift, the PCB will be ANSI and ISO compatible, and I plan to have separate plates for each.

Q: Any other bottom row layouts available?

A: I was planing on a fixed bottom row, but there have been a few well reasoned requests, so I will play around with things to make the blow options available for the bottom row layout.

Q: Can I get 'X' Colour.

A: I will probably run a poll at a future date to select the colour, but so you know, I am trying to keep costs down as far as possible, so I will only be offering one colourway.

Q: Who will be the US/EU/AU proxy?

A: At this time, I am handling everything myself, I'm open to using a US proxy to make import and shipping cheaper for NA, but nothing has been arranged as of yet.

Q: NE Winkey Avail?

A: No. There are already 8 keys available on the bottom row which is fairly standard, the WK blockers are an aesthetic choice by me, and a second top option would raise the per board price for everyone else.

I may revise the F-Key layout once I get the prototype, but I kinda like it as is for now.

Anyway, thank you so much for the interest guys and gals, I'm really looking forward to things moving along.

Great work mate!

I really look forward to seeing how this all plays out and hopefully I might be lucky enough to possibly get my hands on one in the end.. wkl ergo ftw

Hi All, I've been pretty busy updating info and chasing quotes from suppliers over the last week.

I'll give a small update here, as I am trying to hold off updating the first post into a full IC until I get the prototype in hand and I can show it off a bit better.

I have completed the PCB, and ordered prototypes, this should arrive around the same time as the case (1-2 weeks hopefully). then I can start getting QMK figured out, I've found someone to help out with this.

Great news also, the case manufacturer has come back with a very reasonable price on multiple Ano colours, so I will offer a few options after all, not firm on which will be offered as yet, but below are few samples of some colour schemes I’ve been thinking of.

Again, please note these are very quick renders, the final colours (which haven't been selected yet) will probably differ in saturation and hue.

That's it for now, I just wanted to update those who are interested.

Till next time...

Flexerman, when you get the proto could you please kindly consider whether it might work slightly better to bring the two ergo halves closer together so the center “void space” is a little thinner. If you look at the Alice, it seems left and right are about 0.5cm closer together.

Many thanks for your consideration!

I'm not Flexerman, but why take this approach? I mean, why do what Alice does? Isn't that just making another Alice?

Alice was used as an example, not meant as merely a statement to do as Alice did (although Alice is obviously hugely popular...) - it's not the only one where the two ergo halves are closer together. Having used a few different ergo styles in my opinion having them a little closer together feels more natural - but perhaps you've had a different experience given your (presumably rhetorical) question?

In any case, my request was just for flex to look into and consider it, not to do it. This is an IC, after all.

I wasn't trying to be a jerk - sorry if it came across that way. Me personally, most of the ergos I *have* tried are too close together, to the point where I just prefer split keyboards, so making something closer together would make this less appealing to me. And since ICs are ideally new products, I just didn't understand the suggestion to make another Alice. That's all. Again, didn't mean to be a jerk if it seemed that way.

Unfortunately the Prototype has been delayed till next week as I've changed the base to Anodised Alu to better reflect what the GB Participants will receive. I've had my shipping notice for it, so fingers crossed that the UK customs don't hold it too long.

which is a stylised version of the Virgo star sign symbol.

I’ll model it and take a look, I’d really like to avoid going too Swiss cheese on the PCB and having wide gaps on the Plates. But if it looks OK I’ll consider.

I know it’s not ideal for a majority of people, but the plate files and the PCB files will be available after the GB  so people can make what they want in any material they want.  :thumb:

Quick update since I've been quiet for a while.

I had a prototype made, ordered in a nice Blue and gold colourway and it arrived in a very dull grey!

After giving it some thought, I've decided to move to a new manufacturer. Regrettably this has delayed the GB as I obviously need another prototype under this new manufacturer.

Good news is that I'm very happy with 99% of the board, and the outstanding 1% will be addressed in the new prototype and as soon as that arrives I'll update here further.

Thanks all for your interest, this thread will be kept up to date with relevant information, however feel free to jump in the Discord for general discussion and sneak peaks.

Haven't heard anything in a while. How is the search for the new manufacturer going? Any date on the group buy? Also any chance that you can include a wrist rest? Getting one custom made would be a pain.

Well hello,

I’ve purposely left this to quiet down a touch, as I didn’t want to keep bumping without and real news, but...

I have a new prototype expected early next week, if all is well I’ll do a huge update and set a date for the group buy once I have it.

I’ve got a couple of options for wrist rests, I had a shipping notification on Tuesday for them. The plan is to offer a 3D printed rest with the GB. It also to release the CAD model so for you guys who have access to a printer or printing service, you can get them done cheaper than I can sell them for.

Virgo is very much still on, I just need to win manufacturer roulette so I can deliver a quality product.

👍

Hello again.

This is just a quick update for the project, I will take my time and fill out all the details properly in the coming days.

My latest prototype arrived and did not disappoint.

I've not had time to build it up properly, that will come tomorrow. But first indications are that I'm very happy with the quality and I will be looking to move into group buy phase soon after the Christmas break in mid/late January.

I'm going through the process of getting final quotes together for the board, PCB's, Packaging and shipping, and hope to have a final price per unit very soon.

That's it for now, I hope to update everything again soon. For now I'll leave you with some terrible pictures of this lovely board.....  :thumb:

Update 05/01/2020: All the pieces have slotted into place.

I'm happy to announce that the group buy will start on the 15th of February 2020.

Group buy format:
Single form for entry, GB places allocated as follows.

10 places FCFS, available to the first 10 entries on the google form.

This sale is scheduled for 50 boards 'ish, I hope this number can be reached, however, there is a MOQ at the below prices of 25 boards.
There will be extra boards ordered to ensure A-stock for purchasers, therefore I would expect 'some' extras.

and Teal Green

That sounds about right, I need to see how many sell for the final price, as I'll negotiate the best rate I can. if there are enough I'll try and get a proxy involved too.

I think you're gonna need to use the raffle spots relative to sales if the max is 50

This says when the group buy opens, but not when it closes. Given that it is a raffle, it doesn't close when it hits 50.  How long will you leave the raffle open for?

I’m winging it a little on that front. I’ll leave it open for at least 24 hours, if it needs more time to get decent numbers then I’ll let everyone know and extend it.

Hello again, and thanks for all the interest so far.
I thought I'd jump on for an update and to try and answer some of the questions from the IC form that I've been unable to answer until now.

First, an update regarding the group buy, I am now able to offer Carbon Fibre plates as an optional extra during the group buy, these will be available in ANSI and ISO flavors.

Q&A from the interest check form.
Q: Will you offer a Winkey version?
A: Sorry Winkey is not going to be an option, aesthetically I personally prefer WKL, and this board was originally designed as a personal board. The bottom row does have 8 keys tho, So your not actually short on keys if that is the worry.

Q: Is there a wrist rest to go with it?
A: I have a wrist rest designed and ready to go, I wont be offering partly because I forgot about it, and partly because most people could get one made for cheaper than I would be able to offer them. I will however make the manufacturing files open to whoever wants to get one made.

Q: Is this board QMK or something else?
A: Yes, the Virgo PCB is already in QMK ready for launch.

Q: Will the Virgo support VIA?
A: With the recent release of VIA 1.1.1, and the excellent work Olivia and the rest of the VIA team have put in, I see no reason this can't be achieved. I will try and get it VIA ready by the time boards are delivered to customers.

Q: I would really like a plate-less build, is that possible with the Virgo?
A: Unfortunately not, the mounting system uses tabs in the plate to hold rubber strips that are then held by the case. A half-plate would be the closest you could get to plate-less.

Q: Do you support Alps?
A: No, the case will work for Alps switches, but the PCB and Plate would need re-working, this is something I'd be happy to do for any owners who wanted to use Alps, but it's not going to be ready for the GB. Talk to me after if you own a board, and I'll do it for you.

Q: Do I need 3 pin? switches?
A: Both 3 and 5 pin MX switches will work fine.

Q: Do I have to have 2 different colors? can I just have an all black board?
A: Of-course, you can have any combination you want from the colours on offer. Including Onxy/Onyx

Q: Hotswap?
A: Not this time sorry.

Q: Can you fix the F-row, it looks a bit off? I love everything except that.
Love the F-Row please don't change it, looks unique!
That F5 make the top row look niiiiice, love the balance, well done.
I think the F5 needs to sit with F1-F4, I think this may stop me buying it.
Could we loose the F-Row entirely?
Could you just copy the LX-Ergo's F-Row though?
A: Erm...............
This is why most designers stick with their original vision and design, people either like it or they don't.

Q: Do I need a space bar kit from GMK to fit this board?
A: You don't "need" one, no. most GMK kits will cover it if you split the left and right shifts and use the 2.25u and 2.75u shifts as your space bars. I would recommend a space bars kit tho, for aesthetics.

Q: What are the layout options?
A: (https://i.imgur.com/UUijN2v.png)

Q: Will X Color go with X Keycap set?
A: I have no idea?

Q: This is great, thank you, I've been looking for an Alice style board with a TKL cluster for so long!
A: I'm so glad you like my design, however, you still haven't found an Alice style board with a TKL cluster, sorry.

On the whole, I've had very positive feedback so far, thank's again to everyone who took the time to fill out the IC form and join my Discord.
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have ready for the GB on the 15th Feb.

This Keyboard Only Winkeyless???

There is a gap like a WKL board, but if you count the keys on the bottom row you'll see that it isn't missing any.

Are you planning some renders with your colour options.  The green looks really good if it remains dark but I would fear that it ends up a lot lighter.

Pantone color codes from Discord:

Teal Green (https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/631811415627530240/665494925055623199/image0.jpg)
Red Hibiscus (https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/631811415627530240/665498617095782401/image0.jpg)

But don't forget: anodizing, texture and shine will make colors a little different.

Don’t worry, there is no real need to join Discord, only for chat or if you want to ask me a direct question or have a discussion with other potential buyers about plate material or colours.

Any important updates will be on here too.

Last bump in this IC thread from me.

Reminder, The group buy for this keyboard will go live next Saturday 15th February: I will have the GB thread up early next week, with the link to the Google Form where you can enter.

The current plan is for there to still be 50 public boards total, with 10 going to the first 10 entries in the form, the other 40 will be raffled once the form closes (24 hours after opening).

Colour Options:

You can mix and match top and botom colours as you wish.

The form will be enabled at the below times.
15:30 GMT
16:30 CET
10:30 EST
09:30 CT
07:30 PST
23:30 HKT/SPT
