[Interest Check] Faux Cherry Red ESC + RGBY modifiers
« on: Sat, 22 October 2011, 04:34:02 »
This thread is defunct!  See the order thread for the latest on this buy.

The second round moogle kit buy is winding down, and the work cycloverid did to create custom legends that duplicate the Cherry font ended up looking pretty freakin' awesome.

So, naturally the next step is a red Escape key.  I'm interested in duplicating the look of the classic Cherry red Escape (this one is owned by reaper):

[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 30333

cycloverid has graciously offered to do the SVG file.  Here is his work from the second-round moogle buy.  The Ctrl and Alt on the left in the first image are real Cherry 2-shots, and the two columns on the right are the moogle kit.  The second image shows the white kit in context in all its glory.

[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 30335 [ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 30334

So, to sum up: I would like to gauge interest in doing a group buy for a red Escape key with a custom, faux-Cherry legend.  If there's sufficient interest, it would also be cool to do RGBY versions of the Ctrl, Shift, Alt, and Win keys from the moogle kits.

CONTENTS

The base RGBY kit will include:

2 x 1.25x red Control
2 x 1.25x blue Alt
2 x 1.25x yellow Win (legend as yet undetermined)
1 x 2.75x green right Shift

There will be two left Shift options to complete the base kit:

2.25x ANSI green left Shift
1.25x ISO green left Shift

The left Shifts will be ordered as separate individual keys, and are not tied to the RGBY base kit per se.  So feel free to order extras if you so desire.

EXPRESSING INTEREST

Post in the thread if this sounds appealing.  Please clearly indicate a guesstimate of how many of each of the following you'd be interested in, assuming a decent price:

REDESC
RGBY-BASE
SHIFT-ISO
SHIFT-ANSI

Also be sure to include the country your order would ship to.

BREAKING: Calavera has lamented the lack of Choc-Mini-compatible keys in this buy.  Choc lovers, rise up and make your voices heard, and I'll see what I can do!  #occupygeekhack

PRELIMINARY PRICE QUOTES

Bear in mind that these quotes are for the raw manufacturing cost.  There are a lot of other costs that will be factored into the final charge (e.g., legend fees, shipping from SP to me, Paypal seller fee).

REDESC ($35 setup fee)
25 keys @ $4.38 each
50 keys @ $2.43 each
75 keys @ $1.76 each
100 keys @ $1.44 each

RGBY-BASE (no setup fee)
5 sets @ $46.89 each
10 sets @ $26.51 each
15 sets @ $19.71 each

100 sets @ $8.16 each

SHIFT-ISO ($45 setup fee)
5 keys @ $4.18 each
10 keys @ $2.48 each
15 keys @ $1.91 each
25 keys @ $1.46 each
50 keys @ $1.12 each
75 keys @ $1.01 each
100 keys @ $0.95 each

SHIFT-ANSI ($45 setup fee)
5 keys @$20.41 each
10 keys @ $11.22 each
15 keys @ $7.82 each
25 keys @ $5.11 each
50 keys @ $3.07 each
75 keys @ $2.39 each
100 keys @ $2.05 each

OPEN QUESTIONS

Colors.  I'm leaning strongly toward the same red and green from aggiejy's RGB buy:
[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 30340 [ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 30341

Yellow and blue are still very much up in the air though.  Personally, I like BFK or BOH (blue), and YPB or YCH (yellow).
[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 30342

Legend for the yellow Windows keys.  I quite like the diamond legend shown here:

[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 30807

The other main option so far is the standard Windows logo.  Voice your opinions in the thread.

I recommend that you 2 put your order together and try to get a better price from SP than if ordering separate.

Nevertheless, I'd be interested in the SVG files for this.

Thanks!

I'd be in for a couple Esc, maybe one RGB, I'm in US
Filco Majestouch-2 with Cherry Corp. doubleshot keys - Leopold Tenkeyless Tactile Force with Wyse doubleshots - Silicon Graphics 9500900 - WASD V1 - IBM Model M 52G9658 - Noppoo Choc Pro with Cherry lasered PBT keycaps - Wyse 900866-01 - Cherry G80-8200LPBUS/07 - Dell AT101W - several Cherry G81s (future doubleshot donors) (order of current preference) (dang I have too many keyboards, I really only need two)

I was also going to start such a group buy! :)
I'm definitely into a RGB kit as long as it includes a ISO option (short left shift). I'm sure a lot of people may want this, because there hasn't been a ISO RGB kit recently.
Also, I would suggest to actually do a RGBY kit like the one Sixty did some time ago:
[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 29465
But with all 1,25 modifiers in order to fit Filcos, Leopold, etc. I think it would look gorgeous!

So i'm interested in RGB + ESC, I live in Italy.

ISO left shift is different size from compact right shift, yes?  that's too bad because then there's four different shift keys people are likely to ask for...

Yes, ISO left shift is 1.25 as well, so it's actually shorter than "compact".

Help yourself:
http://deskthority.net/wiki/Doubleshot_Replacements_Round_4

There are still some kits not covered by those recent mini-group buys.

I should have known better beforehand: 4 means death in the East-Asian cultures and group buys with an even ordinal number always faild in history.

Personally I think that 7bit is doing a great job with GB4 and I don't want to boycott it in anyway. However, smaller single-purpose GB like Moogle kit 2 have proven to be much faster for obvious reasons. If this GB is going to offer what I'm looking for and I can have it sooner, why should I wait any longer? I'm even ok with spending a little more money for that. I don't really believe this is going to kill GB4 anyway.

What set of caps is that and how does that work? I bought one set of Rebel 1.2 and Rebel 1.5 and none of the caps have an offset and I have never seen a cherry board that has stems that fit like that (like realforces)
Check out my sales thread.

It's a Rebel 1.2 set, I took the picture from here: http://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=689&hilit=rebel
I think it only fits winkeyless keyboards. However, I only meant to suggest to replicate the RGBY color scheme and the "cherry star" legend, not the key size.

They also kill off any volume discount.

But I don't mind!

Maybe I should write some script which is able to turn posts like

I think you should find somebody who would help you translating. It could speed up things. The whole think is too geeky in the moment for the majority. If you are into volume, you need to offer Iphone and Siri, that is a fact of life.

I'm down for RGBY, but I'm not super keen on the Cherry star legend.  Also not sure how economical splitting the order across the various shift lengths will be.  I'll be in contact with Melissa at SP about this next week.

I don't know where the Cherry star come from. I suspect it's not a star but a cursor that Sixty designed it for this board! http://keyboardporn.com/mx-switch/g80-3500-hau---cherry-mouseboard/

I think the yellow key should be an alternative - and neutral - system key. Maybe it could be a simple "diamond" key, as seen on previews GBs. Otherwise it could feature the good old cherry logo, if it's not too detailed to double shot.

I like the idea of an OS-agnostic yellow Meta key.  I'd like to avoid another custom legend if possible though.

"Meta" it's ok for me, I think it woul look fine. That won't be cheaper than a costum legend though, since it's a costum font anyway.
I was looking for a close up on the windowed cherry logo key found on keyboards such as the 2100, but I could not find it. Anyway, I think it looks roughly like this:

Odds are that will be too detailed for SP to make into a doubleshot. Also, the 'meta' has been used on a lot of keys already.

That doesn't look too bad, there should be enough space between the lines for it to work, that is if people wants it

My concern is in the spacing between the fruit and the spacing between the leaf; SP has very strict rules about their Doubleshots and, if the TeamLiquid key is any indicator, they will make you change your design or they will not even attempt it.

According to the wiki: "gaps between lines must be at least 0.5mm". I don't know how to measure that, but I believe the logo could be modified to respect that rule. Anyway, as I said, I'm also cool with "meta" if more people preferes that.

Can you please measure the space bar of the Iphone and the Siri? Are these tenkeyless keyboards?

Those were some group buys that I missed 'cause they went too fast for me. Can't tell you much about them. I could try digging in some Korean forums if you're really interested.

I think people are trying to turn this buy into something far more complex than Hashbaz had in mind when he decided last night to throw out the interest check.

How about you split it into two general categories, make it simple.

choice #1 : ESC only
choice #2 : RGBY for Filco/Poker/Leopold...etc (all 1.25)
choice #3 : RGBY for others (1.5 modifiers + single ALT, short right shift for Noppoo choco mini, EU-size shift)

Something like that, see how many are interested in each.

Probably the best way to go about this, yes.
