Previous introduction:

More
Hi, friends of Geekhack, here is Albert from Matrix lab!

It's been a long while since the our last keyboard IC on geekhack. This time, we have prepared a lot of new things for you guys. At the same time, this will also be our first TKL keyboard officially sold outside of China.

Our original intention in designing this keyboard is to make it a concise and practical. You will not see the complicated external structure design of our previous keyboards on this one. But you can still see some of our previous iconic designs, like the led light in the front or the badge in the back weight. The installation method of badge has been changed to a magnetic type. More convenient to replace it. The badge is compitable with our recent keyboards, like the 8xv 2.0 Additional or 6xv 2.0 Falcon. Also, we will offer badge commission service in the furture.

The front led part has been designed to a simple replacement method. You can easily change the shape by replacing a small metal piece. You can even diy it yourself.

For the mount method, if you are familiar with us, you probably know that 99% of our keyboards are Top mount. Top mount may be the most traditional and widely used mounting method. It can bring a very stable typing feeling experience to users, and can also be tuned very well. From our opinion, the relatively simple structure of top mount can support our complex external design. No matter how complicated our external design is, we don稚 have to worry about the internal structure.

But, we will not use tranditional Top mount this time.

We designed a new type of Top mount for this keyboard, and we will just simply call it 'Top-gasket' mount. The plate is still fixed to the top case, but its not fixed by screws directly. The poron gaskets will be sticked on the plate, and we designed several individual rectangualr pieces to be locked to the top case to clamp the plate. Plz check the schematic below.

As you can see in the picture, the blue one is poron gasket, the red one is fixed strip, and the green one is case dampening pad. The fixing strip is fixed to the top case by screws to achieve the effect of clamping the plate. The purpose of this design is mainly to make it have the typing feeling of the gasket mount while retaining the high compatibility of the Top mount. It allows us to design complex external structures without having to consider the internal structure too much.

Since I have received a lot of suggestions for us to remove/adjust the tabs on the spaces and sides. Here i want to talk about more detail about the internal structure. As you can see below, thats how the internal looks like.

As I have said before, this structure inherits the very flexible advantages of Top mount. The Plate is fixed to the top case by 8 small metal pieces, and each small metal pieces has 3 screws hole on it. You can decide how many screws you want to use on each pieces, and this will ultimately affect the feel of typing.
Based on this, it becomes very flexible. You can adjust the typing feel by adjusting the number of screws used or even the tightness of the screws. If you dont like the side tabs, you can just simply remove the metal pieces, and the side tabs it not working anymore.
Compared with normal gasket mount, I think this is the biggest difference between us.

To improve the typing feeling, we also designed a new type of plate as an upgrade item. A ultra flex one! Plz check the pics below.

We want to increase the resilience of each key when you typing on it, and at same time, it wont fall down at the corner. So we set up flex cut for each keys in the main typing area. The result of this is that it both increases rebound and maintains rigidity. The processing cost of the flex plate is more than three times that of the normal one. So this will be a upgrade choice during GB.

Renders:
This is not the final version, there are still some details to be adjusted

I prayed for a 2.0 Add International Group Buy... but I think this might be better.
My wallet needs to be ready.

EDIT: on another note, I've got some questions about that plate upgrade
  • Can you tell us more about it? Maybe some physical tests?
  • How does it compare vs regular plates?
  • Since it's such a well-engineered piece, will it only come with an aluminum option?
