Keycap & Keyboard Photography
« on: Thu, 23 May 2013, 12:24:20 »
I thought I would start a thread to show off creative ways to take photos of keys. Got bored today so out came my camera so I shot some of BunnyLakes Keys. Let me know what people think of the photos.

Could you release the files so i can use them as Desktop backgrounds?
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

That said, I have some new lighting gear (for my real photo work), will start using it for future keycap photos.

How did you modify your Pac to USB? I forgot to ask you at the meetup.

I made reddit thread for the mod, actually, see here:
http://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/1befcb/modification_dolch_pac_65_keyboard_usb_conversion/

Basically, I opened up the PS/2 end of one of these PS/2 -> USB convertors from this GB (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40549.0) and soldered it to the appropriate wires coming from the PAC board.  The imgur album link @ reddit should be pretty helpful.

Beautiful pictures and keyboards, man.. Especially that red translucent.

I guess I will post the clack pictures I took the other day.. They aren't great, but I guess the aren't bad either. I really ought to get a proper light setup though.

That said, I have some new lighting gear (for my real photo work), will start using it for future keycap photos.

Where exactly did you get that Code key from? Been trying to find out for ages!
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

That image seems broken, but you might look through the recent SP Crap Bag threads - there are a lot of odd and unusual keycaps surfacing there.

It's not SP. He got it from some typewriter that used Cherry doubleshot keycaps.

Not MX stem but I just picked up a Royal 8000 with a blue CODE key for $8 on eBay :)

Will take a bit of modding but it looks like a pretty easy job.

The lighting is just perfect on these shots, what were you using for a lighting setup?

I'm pretty sure I've posted all these on here at one point but I'll repost them since I haven't taken any more keyboard pictures recently. I mix a lot of my stuff with guns, hopefully no one minds.

Thanks! The last pic was taken in a homemade lightbox I made out of a cardboard box and some thrift store fabric.

Otherwise I just bounce the standard camera flash. I'm using a Nikon D5000 with the 18-55mm kit lens.

Where exactly did you get that Code key from? Been trying to find out for ages!

The code keycap is a cherry B profile ABS doubleshot, pulled from a TA Royal Alpha 110 typewriter, which also included an alpha set of TA green on light gray thick PBT dyesubs.  I found it on ebay - probably also worth mentioning that I haven't seen another example of this particular model typewriter come up again since I bought mine about 6 months ago... they are not easy to find these days.

Back to the OP topic, I did some fun photos with keypop's polycarb series caps not too long ago, here's the thread: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=43921.0

And the full album: http://dianoda.minus.com/mzZ6q6uSw4OiC

The retro on white is especially nice :)

The main trick is lighting, then take lots of photos (digital cameras FTW) from different angles, and pick the best one to upload.

There are a couple of GH photography threads with lots of excellent tips!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I still prefer natural lighting best, ive tried different methods including lighting with monitor
natural ftw

except you've a good camera and proper lens
was using 50mm f/1.2 with my mark III for the photo above
god I really need 100mm

It really doesn't get much better than natural lighting. I've found that bounce flash can come pretty close, though it's difficult to do with large items.

Natural lighting is my preferred, but you can get some fantastic shots with a proper artificial light setup.
