Why are you doing this?

I don't know about you, but I find coral reefs to be absolutely beautiful and stunning; however, coral reefs face a very serious threat from us, humans. From destructive fishing to climate change, these external factors threaten approximately 75% of the world's coral reefs.

Some small statistics (pulled from NOAA)

• Support more than 275 million people worldwide.
• Protect coastlines in more than 100 countries - helping defend against storms and erosion.
• Accounts for 15% of gross domestic product in more than 20 countries.
• Hold the potential to fight disease - including treatments for cancer, HIV, malaria, and other diseases.

I designed these keycaps around the Pantone 2019 color of the year: Living Coral (16-1546)

What is the goal of this?

My goal for this is to be able to make a contribution to the Coral Reef Alliance so they can continue to help save our coral reefs. (Charity Navigator rates them highly, but if you have other suggestions, I am open to it)

Working with people around the world-from fishermen to government leaders, divers to scientists, Californians to Fijians-the Coral Reef Alliance protects our most valuable and threatened ecosystem. At the heart of our work are Adaptive Reefscapes - networks of healthy reefs that can adapt to climate change because they are diverse, connected and large."

Donation Percentage/Transparency

Base kit: 25%
Coral Relief kit: 100%
40s kit: 25%
Spacebar kit: 25%
Novelties: 25%

All orders with a shipping address or billing address that is located in Australia will have 100% of the proceeds from their order donated to the Coral Reef Alliance.

Transparency: I plan on releasing the total donation amount shortly after the group buy is finished. A screenshot of my donation via the Coral Reef Alliance's website, as well as, the donation amount being pulled from my bank account will be posted together. I plan on having a post group buy update across all channels.

It's a great color. But I don't like how the purple goes with it. Have you considered using a blue for the accents? A medium to light blue. I think it could look stellar with the coral orange.

I actually pitched a similar "SA coral" set in r/keycapdesigners lol. I really love the coral color and the contrast with bright white. Not a fan of the magenta accent as much. I did tinker around with other accents when and really liked either a darker shade of purple or a teal/seafoam or like the poster had suggested above with med/light blue.

Also your renders are kind of...oddly metallic?

Checking in on this set again — WOW, I have to say it looks great now! That light blue accent really made all the difference. The deskmats look really nice as well.

I did notice a small issue with your base kit, though: you have R1 End and R1 PgDn keys for 1800/CP compat, but they can't really be used without a numpad. Would you consider moving those keys to the numpad kit, and adding R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn (popular options for 65%/75% layouts) to the base kit in their place?
Also, are the triple F and J in the base kit: scooped, barred and regular? If so, do you think it's worth offering the regular F and J at all? I don't think many people use non-homing F and J keys.

Finally, don't give in to Emir's demands, he's been getting his way a bit too much lately I think the padlock caps works well with the set — keep it!

I don't think cutting homing (aka. barred) or scooped is a good idea. If I'm being honest, I don't remember the last time I saw a GMK set run normal F and J If anyone does use them, it's a very small number of people. So normal is probably what you should cut.

- As of late it's become somewhat of a trend to include a second Tab key in mod-colored alpha kits so that
you can build an entire second board with the remaining mod keys. It will surely boost the appeal of the kit overall
- The name "Coral Relief Kit" seems unfitting for the alpha kit. Given that it's an integral part to the idea of this set, and that the alphas
might not run if interest is too low, giving this name to the novelties makes more sense, especially considering the design of the novelties themselves.
- Novelties are nice, but the kit seems a little lean. Having GMKs steep pricing for small child kits in mind, it might need some work. Adding two R4 1u seashells
at the very least for Tsangan/HHKB seems like a no brainer to me.
- I have the suspicion that this unique red might be tough to nail, so be on the lookout for an equivalent RAL-color, as numerous designers have stated, that GMK prefers to work with those over pantone

- Coral Relief Kit is named that since I plan on giving 100% of proceeds I receive from that kit to the Coral Relief Alliance (one of a few ways I plan on giving). I do plan on running to kit as I received feedback that people want to see this kit come alive.
- I will look at adding additional novelties for sure!
- I agree, this color will be hard to match. I will need to sit down and find a suitable RAL equivalent color but that is my FINAL fallback. I plan on working with GMK to ensure we get a color pretty damn accurate, even if it does delay the shipment (assuming we hit MOQ).

Starfish, seahorse, sea turtle, octopus, moray eels, and puffer fish might all be cool to base artisan ideas on.

Mini update,

Today I am pleased to announce the coral wrist rest in collaboration with MarbleKeeb


Some more info on these wrist rests:

The Coral Pink one will be available on 11th October in direct collaboration with the GB for GMK Coral.

At that occasion, 20% of the 65 USD (=13 USD) will be donated to the Coral Reef Alliance for each Coral Pink Marble wrist rest sold, and proof of donation will be provided.
The Coral Pink marble wrist rest is a perfect color match for this keycaps set and it is a great opportunity to try to help the threatened coral reefs.

This GB will be a raffle and will end at the same time as the GMK Coral GB.
28 pieces will be directly available and shipped in November, if there is a high interest for this color (60+ ), I can order another run of production, but quantity of the base material is currently limited for this one and it would take about 3 months before shipping.

Potentially too late now to change, but one thing I noticed that I think this set also could benefit from is including an extra 'Tab' key in the coral relief set as doing so would allow somebody to use the basekit + coral relief kit to cover a full size ANSI layout plus a 60% Tsangan - Except we're missing a 2nd tab key.  And the only way to get that missing Tab key is to buy a whole 2nd base kit.  There seems to be an extra R2 1.5U '\' key in coral relief that is already included in the base kit which is (I think?) redundant.

I will admit that I realized this mistake (of not including tab on alphas) really late in the process. This is my first ever design so please excuse the error. I may ask GMK to see if they'll be able to swap the extra R2 1.5U for a tab.

I talked to GMK and they allowed me to swap the "\|" key in the "Coral Relief" kit for a tab key, which means you will be able to fill 2 boards (one standard and one tsangan) with a basekit + "Coral Relief" kit

Reorganized my IC a little bit, cleaned it up so I can send it off to the groupbuy stage tonight.

I doubt anyone will read this post but, I really want to thank everyone who has helped, supported, and offered advice throughout this process. Without y'all, this would never have been possible. I've learned a great deal the past month about this whole process and it's been a roller coaster of emotions.

Regardless of the outcome of GMK Coral, I just want to say thank you.

(now let's go buy some plastic to save the coral reefs...soon)

Do you think the final product will look more like the render (more vibrant colors) or the pantones (more muted)? I love the vibrant renders. This would be my first keycap group buy ever.

So the pantone chips I have shown is what I will be color matching. Renders are just computer generated images so they aren't exactly accurate but give a good representation of what it will look like. Additionally, lighting may change the look (white light, nature light, yellow light, etc.).

The renders are close to what I envision the final product to look like.
