Round 1: Cyan, Pink, Sky Blue
LEDs are coming from this aliexpress store (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/group/Rectangular-square-led/629743_251765645.html). Later rounds will feature more colors assuming that this goes well.
Why buy from this IC?
It's easy. You don't have to make a throwaway account with them (they will spam your email and all your youtube ads will be for them) and deal with all that.
It might be cheaper. Not sure if I'll split packs or not. We'll see.
SIP sockets are the longer ones that MIL MAX makes and are my favorite for keyboards. They're being sourced from Mouser (http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Mill-Max/311-43-164-41-001000/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMs%2fSh%2fkjph1tjJZclYmfaNPJ3I9Z5RDf1I%3d) unless someone finds a better price.
Payment will be handled by PayPal invoice. As dorkvader mentioned there's every chance it'll be cheaper for international orderers to buy directly from the aliexpess store. If we hit outrageous discounts I'll revisit international orders. Orders that aren't in multiples of 100 will be shipped out last.
International orders will be fulfilled by hwood34 who will send a separate invoice for shipping them.
Prices
cyan: $0.04/each 10000 count price reached!
pink: $0.06/each 10000 count price reached!
skyblue: $0.04/each 10000 count price reached!
sip socket: $0.07/each next break at 32000 count and alternate source is sending samples
Final price may be a be between tiers so extras and padding counts can be reached.
Order Deadlines
Order deadline is midnight the night of Wednesday 10 December. (officially midnight is on Thursday but you get the idea) After then, you'll be able to increase your order until all payments are in but you won't be able to decrease your orders and risk hurting tiers.

Quick recommendation, only allow orders in clumps of 100. You will drive yourself insane if you have to do special amounts for people. And make sure you have a little margin for buying over how many you need in case they short you some.
Yeah, I definitely expect to be able to over-order to make sure we have enough. If the seller shorts us on what we paid for, I'll also do my best to dispute it with them, but I want to have extras on hand so I can fulfill the group buy without waiting on that process.
With respect to the counting, it's one of the few things in life I'm pretty good at, so I don't mind counting out weird numbers as long as people are okay with waiting until all the rounded to 100 orders are out the door.

Good lord those SIP sockets are expensive. That's $.22 per switch. I paid $.03 per socket on ebay, What's so special about these?
These aren't really that special, they're just a bit longer than the ones listed in the SIP socket thread (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=51792.0) which means they actually protrude through the holes in the PCB rather than being flush with the bottom. I find it's easier to work with them, both desoldering and using less solder when assembling. Looking on ebay for this specific part turns up nothing even remotely comparable in price to Mouser, which is a little sad.

Mill-Max SIP sockets is best, high quality and non easy breakable. I use them on my all korean boards.

I'm going to look at the order counts on October 8th and compare that with any discount tiers beyond the 1000count that I get from the aliexpress seller (if any). If we've hit the highest discount reasonable, I'll leave orders open for another week while I invoice everyone and then close round 1. If we're no where close, I'll extend it another week or so into October.
If shipping starts out smoothly, I'm going to start taking orders for a second round immediately. The second round will include international orders for definitely.

According to the datasheet, the "long solder tail" SIP Sockets they have are 0.170 in "for multi-layer boards" that corresponds to 4.3mm. Normal SIP sockets length is .125 in which is 3.175mm
The above manufacturer offers them in pin lengths of 3.94 to 25mm. So we could get ones like this if we wanted:

Interesting. I'll figure out what it takes to get samples from them, I don't really want to order a bunch sight unseen. Given that we need to cut these out of the jackets to use them I want to be very sure that the pins are sturdy and not too soft. I have to head out to my day but this will be my first order of business when I get home.

It's better to remove the plastic if use plate and keep the plastic on the SIP if use pcb without plate.
without or with the plastic, it would be still sit flush and solid. Mill-Max is designed to be durable.

I find that completely separating them from the housing is easier than trying to get the housing to fit perfectly but other people manage to get it to look very nice. One caveat that I learned assembling my Orion is that for loose sockets you need to place an LED in them while you solder so that they remain angled correctly. I did a few before I thought of this and had to desolder them to fix it.

If we're able to get cheaper sip sockets I would like to change my order to include 200 sockets.
We're already in the $0.08/each tier for these mouser sockets and dorkvader and I are looking at alternative sources. I'd suggest everyone order what you want without regard to the current prices. It will help me project what demand is and get the best product and price for everyone. Before invoicing starts I'll announce final prices and give everyone a chance to change their order. I've got cash to cover people who need to drop because the price isn't right without losing our tiers and I'm fairly confident I'll be able to move what I don't use myself.

hwood34 and I just spoke over skype. He'll be providing shipping for international orders. I'll add some fields to the order form to support this tomorrow or Saturday. International orderers will receive one invoice from me for the product and one from hwood34 for the shipping. hwood34 has experience sending international parcels where I don't. Hence why I was hesitant to add international shipping to my concerns for this first group buy. Since the demand is there, I'm hoping this arrangement will work out for everyone.

Is there a quantity where we get a price break on those sip sockets? I would love to get a bunch, but the price is a bit prohibitive. I have been working with the regular ones and I know these will be MUCH easier to work with, but that price is a bit though to swallow. I have been buying the regular ones on ebay for $1.35/120. I know these are nicer, but 10x nicer?

We hear you. I'm trying to get in touch with a supplier in China. If we stick with Mouser, I'm going to try hitting the 6400 count price of $0.07 a socket, which is still pricy but at least somewhat sane. I can say it makes a remarkable difference in assembly for me. Which is why I'm really going for it. If we can't find an inexpensive supplier though, we may have to re-assess.

You can probably get common colours locally. Saves time and a ton of money.
If not, it's pretty easy to order yourself from aliexpress. Just sign up with an email account you don't mind getting all the SPAM on. They ship internationally.
Honestly, I figured everyone would just go buy it themselves from the link. It's like eBay: very simple and I do believe they offer moneyback if something goes wrong (just like eBay does).

GB things I don't yet know the timeline for samples but I expect that I'll be extending the deadline for everything into late November so that I can check them out. I'm also a bit behind on getting the order confirmation and update forms up. Mostly because I've been stuck on Windows and the tools I use for CSV aren't as fun without a proper shell. I'll do my best to get that out tonight along with an FAQ post.

We're able to cut a few cents of each LED for all colors if we can get a poop ton of diodes. Tiers and suppliers I've heard back from both the AliExpress vendor and you can now see the 5000 and 10000 count prices in the aliexpress shop. We're able to cut a few cents of each LED for all colors if we can get a poop ton of diodes. There were some questions about the actual color of the LEDs. I've done my best to be honest about the fact that I haven't seen them yet. The cyan have been reported as "minty" by one user in the IC, but also as a jade green by another user.
The pink are the ones I know the least about, if you ordered some for yourself do please let us know, are they warmer than a magenta or pretty much the same as other magenta / purplepink LEDs?
The sky blue LEDs are reportedly very very light blue.
My initial order of 100 each has shipped. When it arrives I'll do my best to take color-accurate photos against white cards and in my keyboards and balance them on a calibrated monitor, as well as get a few people with good eyes for color to give subjective descriptions.

pretty much. you of it like a tight fitting socket for a plug, i read that analogy somewhere. also when clipping the LEDs, clip them long and slowly adjust so that they fit snug. cutting them too short can make it too lose the LED may not function properly when you press the key it's in. that guide did mention this but i'll mention it again, place an LED in the sockets as a place holder so that the SIP sockets are oriented and spaced correctly before you begin soldering everything together.

Yeah, I definitely break a few getting them out of the housing. There's a slight possibility with this new vendor that
- They might deliver us sip sockets cut into twos already
- The jacket might be slightly shorter (keeping the same pitch, socket pin length, and tail length) such that they fit without removing the insulation jacket
I'm waiting on samples to confirm this. They didn't have a jacket size the same length as MIL MAX so I've got samples of slightly shorter and slightly longer.

So the LEDs arrived today! The sky blue are indeed very white-ish but still cast a blue light. I think they'll look alright reflecting on stainless plates. The cyan LEDs looked cyan at first but then I compared them with the sky blue ones and now I have no idea. They look terrible together, which dashes my hopes at checkerboarding them. Putting the two together makes the sky blue look white and the cyan look green.

I have the Cyan as well and when I fixed it in it looks green-ish. Hard to explain but it still looks nice. Interested in the pink one though. :)

Some notes in general. All LED packets ordered contained precisely 100 LEDs. So far every tested LED (mostly the pink ones but a half dozen sky and cyan as well) has worked. If there are any "out" in my photographs it is likely because it was improperly installed. The G and 7 also appear to have cold solder joints.

The sky blue LEDs look pretty white by themselves, but let them reflect a little and they're a vibrant sky blue indeed! I dug up a set of thick old WYSE caps to use here to hopefully bleed less light than the valentine set did. I'm not sure it was necessary as even the modern thin modifiers barely showed. Note that the greenish color under the arrows is the result of the reflection of the yellow plastic in the blue light. Which should be another indicator that these lights are indeed blue.

For this last photo I tried to match the light cast on the index card to the color reflected on the plate. Nothing about this photo matches reality, I was just trying to give y'all a larger sample of what you'll see under your keycaps.

Sorry about that. The list was actually updated both Sunday and Monday but there's something screwy with the time on my VM.
Today is the last day to order! Tomorrow evening I'll be doing the final collating. Order increases will be accepted until invoices start going out. At which point I'll have to handle things case by case because if something changes the bulk purchase amount I'll have to recalculate everything.

Installing SIP sockets can be an involved process. On switches that you're planning to open and lubricate already, it doesn't add that much but if you weren't planning to open the switches already it does add that requirement. Also if you're trying to mod an assembled board you need to desolder existing LEDs, and if you don't have a custom plate, you also need to desolder the switches so they can be opened.
How much work it adds really depends on how much work you're doing. In my opinion it's only really worth it if you're already opening the switches.

Just a quick update to say I'm not dead. I was planning on spending some time in the last couple days working on invoices but life had other plans. Also I realized I forgot to figure out shipping estimates for some of the larger order volumes. I'll be honest with y'all invoicing will probably start Monday rather than tomorrow since I work weekends.

The public order form is about to get a new column for the status of an individual order. The statuses are enumerated below
PENDING - Your order has not yet been invoiced.
INVOICED - Your order has been sent an invoice via PayPal. If you did not receive it, PM me.
PAID - Your order's payment cleared. This is a manual update so if you paid, check the timestamp on the order status list and send me a PM if yours wasn't marked.
SHIPPED - Your order has been shipped and you've been PM'd a tracking number (probably)
CONFIRMED - Your order arrived all accounted for and you PM'd or posted in the thread.
CANCELLED - You set all your order counts or PM'd me to cancel your order.
Oh and to *really* drive home the fact that you need two SIP sockets per switch, They're invoiced in pairs. (Also with the way pricing worked out they cost me about $0.065 and PayPal won't charge fractional pennies and I don't want to overcharge by nearly a dollar on every order of 100 SIP sockets. ) So if you notice that the unit count in your invoice is half what you ordered. Please also note the 2x at the front of the item line. <3

I've meticulously kept salts, api credentials, and personal data out of the actual script files that run this group buy so as soon as I've shipped this buy with these tools I'll publish the repo on GitHub for others to gawk at my rubbish ruby and possibly take advantage for their own buys.

If you didn't have a shipping address on your invoice it's because I think your order is international. If you're in the US and there was no shipping address on your invoice, PM me.

I have a question. I have no clue how to put these in my keyboards. Brand new mechanical keyboards and just want to make sure I know what I'm doing before I actually start taking things apart.
I've read up about the SIP sockets and they are very convenient (<-don't know why that word convenient looked so weird when I was spelling it). I really like the idea of being able to swap out led colors as I choose. I know where they are installed in. Inside the MX switch which I know I am going to have to open the switch up to access the led placement.
So I'm getting a poker II soon. I want to put these SIP sockets in so I can swap led colors to my liking when I get new keycaps. The question is do I have to desolder everything? Like the switch and all to install the SIP socket. Well I didn't even know these existed before so I got the poker II with led backlighting. At this point, I can make this group buy happen. If absolutely nobody else paid, everything might get a bit more expensive but it will still happen. That would totally suck logistically though, so let's hope that doesn't happen. ;D

Long answer: SIP sockets are going to get ordered the moment I've confirmed the shipment of LEDs has left China so they arrive at roughly the same time. The first thing I'm doing when everything is in hand is sorting and counting out LEDs. Given the size of the LED order I expect this to take 7-10 days of realtime (actual sorting can only happen in evenings or on days off work). Once the LEDs are sorted, I'll start sorting SIP sockets. It shouldn't take much time at all since they come in long sticks.
Once everything is sorted, I'll send the big big order. Then I'll bag international orders for hwood34 to double check and send. After the big order and international orders are out, I'll parcel the US orders as quickly as I'm able. Depending on how well the sorting phase goes, this should take a maximum of 7 days realtime. Tracking numbers will be PM'd to participants when their order is parceled. The post office is close by so I usually get things dropped off the day after they're packed.
So from the LED arrival date the process should be
9 - 12 days sorting
1 - 2 days prepping large and international orders
4 - 7 days shipping US orders
2 - 4 days in US Post

Wouldn't a gram scale with a piece count feature save you more hassle than what the scale costs? That's just a ridiculous amount of counting to be done by hand.

Short answer: I have no idea.
Long answer: SIP sockets are going to get ordered the moment I've confirmed the shipment of LEDs has left China so they arrive at roughly the same time. Ok, so I just weighed out some LEDs that I have. They are 3mm round flangless LEDs I ordered from China.
The LEDs weigh .156 grams each, very consistent. (weighed with a milligram scale). I also used my gram scale to weigh these out that only has tenths for a resolution. Counting out a known number of LEDs and weighing it with the less accurate scale will produce a +/- 1 or 2 error rate most times. Getting a scale that has resolution to the hundredth will pretty much eliminate the error.
The only problem is when you buy milligram scales, they can only weigh like 20 grams total. So whatever you are weighing the LEDs in will take away from the total weigh-able amount. For example a 9 oz plastic cup weighs 4.5 grams. 200 of my round LEDs weigh roughly 31 grams. You can get away with using a scale that has a resolution to the hundredth and has a capacity of about 100 grams, and they are cheap $10-20 on amazon or ebay, just be sure to get one with a nice sized weighing platform you can place like a Solo cup on that will hold your LEDs to be weighed. Add in an LED or two for good measure on an order if you have a little padding, and it will save you 1 week of counting hell.
Hopefully these will be bagged in 1000 qty, 500, 100, etc by the supplier. I doubt you'll receive a huge sack of each color with the number ordered all together, but who knows. Either way, you have some work ahead of you, and I thank you again for putting this together.

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking. If we manage to sort everything before I leave, it will all ship before I leave. If we don't finish the sorting, I'll ship what I can and sorting will finish when I return.

Yeah, I have an acrylic case coming for my Sprit, I have a corsair rgb coming to harvest switches from for that, and then I'll be buying one of the upcoming 1800 kits as well.

Wow this buy is taking a lot longer than I would've thought when I saw it come up. I ordered the LEDs directly from aliexpress and got them within like 3 weeks, since I didn't want to wait to finish up my projects.Yeah, LEDs and SIP sockets, order them after the deadline, have them in 2-3 weeks, take a week to sort them uinge a scale to measure them, print labels, then you are done.

You can get SIP sockets on ebay for a couple dollars o_O, I haven't really been following, but did you guys source longer legged SIP sockets? If so, that may be worth it.

Just wanted to chime in here and report that I used LEDs from this vendor (these actually (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/High-Quality-and-High-lightness-100pcs-2x3x4-Rectangular-square-type-sky-blue-color-led-beads-brightness600/629743_2022772817.html)) on my Octagon 75% build this weekend (no sip sockets) and they look amazing -- super bright. I had no duds. They fit perfectly in the space on a Cherry MX switch and were otherwise really easy to work with. Couldn't be happier. You guys are in for a treat.

General status
Sorting is happening and the big box is packed. It's taking a bit longer than expected due to my scale not being as nice as I thought. I'll work on replacing the scale today. radio_killah stopped by before dinner yesterday to pick up his stuff, so that's one order delivered.

Yeah, the LEDs arrived in one box with cardboard dividers between colors. Individual anti-static bags of 1000 and a bag of spares that looks to have between 10 and 20 LEDs.
I am going today to get a scale to do the sorting for cyan and pink as I finished doing the sky blue yesterday.

There's also a few hundred LEDs of each color counted out and in measures of 100. I would love to keep sorting tonight, but I have yet to pack for GDC and I need to be up at 6 to leave for it. Which means that I won't have made my goal of shipping everything before GDC. I'm really sorry that's the case and I'll be coming home a day earlier than planned to get everything I can to the post office Saturday and send the rest out Monday. If there's any further add ons to orders, PM them to me over the course of this week and I'll add them to the list for when I return.

Normally, my job is awesome. I work at a highly distributed company with a schedule that is generally very accommodating.
However, since the start of March, a number of pretty awesome but very time consuming projects have increased the general amount of time I need to spend working the schedule of a normal human. Because I'm not used to working this way, I'm also twice as exhausted as I normally am. So even on nights when I have physical time to work on sorting and packing, I don't have the willpower to get it done.
Today I've got a proper day (almost) completely free from work and this is what I've managed to get done:
1 order was picked up by a helpful sorting volunteer
19 of US orders are sorted and packed, and just need bubble mailers.
26 orders are sorted and need to be assembled and packed, they need flat rate boxes because of the SIP sockets.
9 orders are odd amounts that need to be sorted still.
If I can make it to the post office today, get more bubble mailers, and then get back, set up postage, it's possible I could get those 19 out today. But it's more likely that I'll drop them off tomorrow morning on the way to work.
The plan for the remaining orders is to pack them up and get them ready to send. Hopefully I can get boxes on the first post office trip.

If you don't remove the plastic they don't fit quite right. I removed the plastic and placed an LED to hold it in place while soldering.

US orders without SIP sockets went out today. Should be delivered Monday. I had someone else take care of delivery so I don't yet know what tracking information was preserved.
That is, shipments should be tracked but I'm not sure if the tracking numbers are associated with orders or if I just have a ton of tracking numbers.

Really like both the "pink" and the "sky blue" variety. The "pink" is indeed a warmer toned pink as compared to my magenta LEDs (the more standard variety found on eBay). A very nice color to go with a "purple" (magenta-ish) board I should finish putting together. The sky blue LEDs are brighter and perhaps a tad less green than my turquoise LEDs--I've only tested both on an LED tester, and it was difficult to tell the exact difference in tonality due to the difference in brightness. Either way, a great color. The jade colored "cyan" I already had from long ago from aliexpress and never found a use for them :(

I'll try this again at some point, as photographing LEDs is usually an exercise in frustration, but here's a rough idea of how these LEDs compare. I'd mostly pay attention to the glow halos around the LED bulbs.

I didn't ship the international orders, but I can say that depending on the origin and destination countries tracking can be a totally crapshoot. I've had things that never appeared in tracking *arrive* with the tracking still saying "waiting for origin scan" or whatever.

I did my best to make sure that all orders are complete and correct, but mistakes happen. If possible, please at least spot check your order to make sure it's more or less correct when you receive it. As you can see from the thread history I'm traveling quite a bit. Which means that if an order found to be mistaken after end of May it could be a while before I can do anything about it.

I don't think this happened but it's easily the thing I'm most paranoid about. Most (all?) orders have a little paper slip in them that says who they're for and what amount of everything is in the order. If you got an order meant for someone else... well.. dang. PM me and we'll figure it out. I'll likely just ship folks the difference rather than have people re-ship out orders.

I'd be interested in picking up some SIP sockets if anyone has any spare to sell, stopped looking at this GB when it was US only and didn't realize international orders became available until it was to late.
I mayjust have to buy from mouser directly as the Vendor who picked these up seems to be going nuts on the price and marking it up a ****load over mousers prices let alone this GB's.
Which vendor is this? I only need like 20 more, not a huge quantity, so I'll have to suck it up with the price.

Also, price is trivial when it comes to having the easiest SIP sockets to work with, as well as build quality. Have you confirmed on the source of SIP sockets?
60% has ~61 keys, so you'd need 122 sockets. I doubt you'd need many extras, if any, as I don't really see many situations in which you'd be breaking these.

Hey all. Sorry for the slooooooeoewness of this long tail. Everything has long since shipped. I've been busy with The Real Life and never got around to sending everyone their tracking numbers. There are two individuals I'm working with to send additional items because their orders came up significantly short.

Honestly, I don't think LED GBs are worth it, unless it's actually impossible to buy them in small quantities. These LEDs are already readily available to buy on AliExpress.
We shouldn't give anyone the burden of having to sort and ship thousands and thousands of LEDs for what may be a negligible price difference.

Well, I never participated in a LED buy so I apreciate the input. I'd be down to host it but unfortunately I'm not in the US and brazilian customs would delay the buy for months if not years. According to the seller there are some custom options (see the image below) for LEDs that perhaps some people could be interested in.

I don't have pictures of your setup, nor enough experience to give an exact advice. However, thinking about it and creating some scenarios in my head I came to the conclusion that you should be good with either. It doesn't really matter. The tail is long enough for you to solder the SIPs, but aren't extremely long to the point they could potentially pierce through the bottom of your switches. I don't know what case are you using, nor how your setup is but I believe you should be good with both options. I'd get the longer ones (standard ones used on the buy, aka Long Tail), as you could trim the legs a little bit if they become an issue when installing.
Perhaps some more experienced users could give some more precise inputs? It would be much apreciated.

I'll try this again at some point, as photographing LEDs is usually an exercise in frustration, but here's a rough idea of how these LEDs compare. I'd mostly pay attention to the glow halos around the LED bulbs.

And these are: "Sky Blue", my previously owned turquoise ("Ice blue"), and my previously owned "Cyan" (more like jade):

To put this in perspective, Ice Blue already looks very cyan-green when installed in large numbers on a keyboard. So in that respect, Cyan looks a cold shade of VERY green, and I anticipate Sky Blue to look more green than what I currently have on my keyboards and call "turquoise". I was hoping Sky Blue would be less green than my Ice Blue, but it seems to go the other way around. Still a very nice color to experiment with. The Pink LEDs will go great with purple anodized plates and cases, as the normal Purple LEDs are usually too cold toned to match.
Where did you get the more purple led? I bought some purple ones in 2014 from an ebay store but now they only sell the more pinkish led
