It isn't really if you have some impulse control. You have to be logical about the amount of keyboards and/or keycaps you need instead of want.

Some may not agree with me, especially those with lots of money to blow. If you're not the richest guy (like me), then you have to have some impulse control and be responsible by limiting yourself.

I have two keyboards: mx brown and mx blue. I use one for general use and the other for typing papers. I don't feel like I need any more keyboards. However, my mx blue keyboard has stock keycaps so I would like to get a set of PBT keys for it. Other than that, novelty keys just don't suit most keyboards, in my opinion.

Well said, currently only own a filco with stock keycaps.  I cant believe I would pay the type of money for 1 keycap if i ever had the opportunity to buy it for retail, but it would look great with the setup I am planning.

Looking through the classifieds and group buys is great way to waste time while I'm at work though  :p.

well... technically none of NEED a mechanical board. the 11$ Dell membrane board that came with the family desktop in 1998, or the one your office's help desk gave you is all you need.

everything else is a want. i want a mechanical keyboard. i want a set of dolch, CCnG, and Round 3 keycaps. i want a 60% board. i want topre realfor......

when it comes to any gadget discussion wants vs needs conversations are silly to me. I dont technically need any of this crap. but i sure do love it!

because having nice quality keycaps makes the keyboard look like a whole new animal, especially exotic keycaps . But do I need them, heck no!!! a 10 bucks keyboard will do the job for my main daily use since im no typist nor I work with the keyboard.... But yet I joined this website about year and a half a go and guess what, now I found my self with 15+ keyboards, most of them are IBM new ones lol, tap on the shoulder and I tell my self, its not for gamblinmg, not for drugs, not for drinking, and after all I can sell them one day and get 70% back.

On another note, if I sell the IBM's after 7-8 years later I might  actually make good money :)

Dont spend what you cannot afford, first comes food, rent, bills and if you have money to spend on keyboard go for it, cause after all if you save 100-200 a month, guess what aint gonna make you rich men even after 20 years , except if you make some crazy investement and for some luck that investment turns out to be 100% profit....

But thats a long way shot....... So I say buy what you dezire if you can afford, after all we all live once, make it count.

Lol I justify my purchases the same way. I also am an avid collectors of nike and Jordan sneakers.  "At least it's not gambling or drugs!"

Sometimes I find that if you don't jump on an item right away, it'll get snapped up real quick.

GB's aside, if there is seomthing you are after, there are many nice people on here that would PM you directly and as for rare goodies, you just need to be lucky and hope that everyone else is sleeping when it comes up for sale.

Its been a weeks or two without a korean custom for sale. a few more weeks back there were so many for sale. would have been a good time for someone to pick one up!

Well, if you want to be technical...Neither a keyboard or a computer are a need. So, since this is a keyboard enthusiast forum (aka wallet hack), we can agree to get past the technicalities such as the fact that a mechanical keyboard is not a need. Thus, I hope we can agree that anything more than ONE mechanical keyboard or keycap set is a WANT and should be treated in a manner in which impulse buying is kept at a minimum.

It is not all that different from collecting stamps, with the added benefit that they actually also have some practical use.

As you can see in my Sig I have a fair amount of keyboards, but I don't have too many interesting keycaps. At least not yet. I've got 2 sets from round 4 coming and then the DSA group buy on the way though. It helps that I use Colemak instead of Qwerty so most sets don't even interest me. Over all though, the only reason I could even buy most of this stuff is because I traded my collection of magic cards for like $1700 worth of cash/keyboards.

Keycaps on my shopping list:

Double shot: CCnG, RA, Valentine.
PBT: Grey and white dye-sub, and maybe grey and blue non-print.
And a gasmask keycap or something else special for ESC key.

All of these in total, will be >500$.

Keycaps I want:
1 full set Round 3 or 4

Anything wicked old school or vintage looking.

I started purchasing keycap sets from Geekhack 6 months too late for the Round 4 Spherical DSA goodness... DARN IT.

The price point of most key caps and even key cap sets lends itself to impulsive buying. They are neat, you want them, they don't appear expensive on the basis of a single purchase.....then you look at your bank account statement.
