Best switch for ergodox?
« on: Tue, 22 September 2015, 04:10:55 »
I've tried everything but clears. I use a vintage black cherry on maltron right now, and browns on a filco.
Each switch feels good on a different keyboard layout.

What would you recommend?
keyboards: Cherry G80-3494- cherry reds | filco majestytouch - cherry browns | kinesis contour - cherry browns | cherry G80 - 1800 cherry blacks.
mice: filco touchpad | logitech G9x | wowpen joy | kensington orbit trackball | zalman fpsgun | intellimouse v1 | logitech rx1500

I find light lubed linear switch (modded vintage MX Black or lubed MX Red) PCB mounted to be the most ergonomic in ErgoDox. Please note that I dislike tactile Cherries, though I quite like clicky Cherries (and Gaterons). Still my favourite Cherries are linear :)

The fact you're using an ergodox is largely irrelevant to the switch choice. Computer usage and personal preference should dictate your choice. I personally like cherry white.

But... Caps?

Massdrop....  I picked up 3 sets of doubleshot's.  ABS though.. but still.  Doubleshot.

I am personally waiting for the infinity ergodox drop to start again so I can pick up an ergdox kit with matias quiet clicks.

All doubleshots are ABS though. Except for Vortex, which look like crap and defeats the whole purpose of doubleshot.

Ahh.  Shows what I know :)  I'm not the biggest fan of the feel of ABS but its a trade-off with the feel of the switch.

BTW:  Massdrop is dropping another round of ALPS switches right now.  The dolce looks great - someone posted up a pic of their KB60

I agree with that statement, partially.

I am however of the opinion that switches that do give tactile and audial feedback are more ergonomic.
Also, audial feedback should be given only on actuation - not on bottoming down or topping up. Also, bottoming out hard is bad for the fingers.

Therefore, I think that one the best switches for the ErgoDox would be Cherry MX Blue with O-rings installed. (or similar).
If you, by nature strike harder, then do by all means use MX Green or White, which are like the Blue with a
harder spring. If your strike is very very light then you could use Browns.
Alternatively use Cherry MX Clear, but do lube them and don't use lighter springs - a lighter spring does not make actuation less hard. The harder spring in Cherry MX Clear only cushions the stroke, preventing you from bottoming out hard - the hard springs are an ergonomic feature.

Yes. If ergonomics is the goal, blue, white or green as preference dictates.
My point was that using an ergodox does not necessarily mean that switch economics is the goal.

If I were to get an Ergodox, it'd definitely have MX Greens.

I myself am leaning toward MX White. I have a rule where I do clicky stems for full-size boards, tactile for TKL, and linears for anything smaller. The ErgoDox, being such a unique board, needs some unique switches. The milky White MX is more tactile to me, but still has that soft click that may come in handy in providing audible feedback as I learn a new keyboard.

Get a tester and find out what you like.  No single switch is better for one particular physical layout than any other.

My two current ErgoDoxen have all Cherry MX Clear switches. For the Infinity ErgoDox, I went with the Zealios 65g switches. When I build the Infinity ErgoDox, I plan on using either the Gateron Clear or Gateron Black switches on the thumb clusters, and the inner and outer keys (the 1.5u capped ones).
