O-ring alternatives, maybe?

Has anyone ever tried silencing clickclacks with thin pads of textile felt instead?
Any thoughts about how the solidity (or lack thereof) on underlying keyboard PCB or even the chassis materials would impact keystroke decibels?

I think the felt would compress over time, as well as be tedious to cut to fit without dies for the task.
