"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I wish that I owned a Cherry blue keyboard for you to do the jailhouse mod on.

Or a Cherry clear board for you to do the ergo mod on.

Reasons to use paid services:
1. They have experience in these things, I'm doing this as a learning experience
2. You're supporting your fellow geekhacker
3. They will probably give you some sort of guarantee of their work, I obviously cannot offer this.

Are you able to solder LEDs onto a Poker X? If I recall correctly it has to be manually wired. Could tip you or something if you want.

Yeah that would be quite a bit of work to do one of those, I'd have to essential make an entire LED Matrix on the back of your board, and even then there'd be uber limited functionality (always on, no brightness control).

If you're still interested in that, PM me.

Made a limited edition board even more limited. Both of these switched to MX Clears, and LEDs switched from white to blue in the TK

Also took the white LEDs from the TK and put them in my Blue one, and the blue plate makes it look uber sexy imo.

The “o” key on my Pure works, and then doesn’t work, and then later works again. I have blown it out a little, checked for debris—the usual resorts of the minimally informed. I have no idea if it’s the switch, the solder, or some other cause. Is this a problem you can solve? What do you charge?

I'm sure kmiller8 can fix it. It's most likely a cold solder joint, a lifted pad, or the diode needs to be reflowed.

Did you change the resistors on these as well?

The green/white swap will be fine, but you might find the red LEDs burn out running in a board that was designed for blue LEDs.

Just as a reference (though it's a good ball park)

Those red LEDs might be way over driven

Margo

Is that true of all LEDs, or do they differ from brand to brand?

For instance, Mionix Zibal 60 has a shade of yellow-green that I’ve never seen anywhere. Now would that be 2.1V or 3.4V?

So the reds and yellows need stronger resistors? When doing the SIP socket mod, I’ve read that you can insert the appropriate resistor along with the correct LED into the same SIP sockets. Does that mean you have 2 things nestled together in the same tiny space on top of a Cherry key housing?

Also what about pink/magenta and purple? These being between red and blue, and red and white, it isn’t obvious what is the correct voltage to drive them.

I am concerned given that I’m sending you my stuff to mod, of course… and might be sending Kmiller something sometime. Wouldn’t want to burn out my board thanks to my ignorance after I get it back!

No I did not change the resistors.

It's my understanding manufacturers obviously don't drive their LED's to a full 20mA 100% of the time especially because the change from 5mA to 20mA has marginal change in brightness. So assuming there's a 10mA @ 3.4V, dropping to 2V would only raise the current to 17mA which is still within manufacturer spec (which how trustworthy is that really).

Hey, would you switch the switches on a Corsair K70 w/ Cherry MX Reds? I like the black with red LEDs color scheme, but it's only available in, well, Reds.

I have a box of switches I could "trade" you for, mostly Reds, Blues, and Browns with a few Clears and Blacks. If I don't have enough then yeah, you could either ship a spare keyboard to harvest from, or buy switches from someone.

Alright. I'll definitely consider, but I think that Corsair is going to announce that they stock black and red k70s in switches that aren't MX Reds, since they have an announcement relating to the k70 tomorrow, and the Facebook picture is a black and red k70 with blue switches.

Yeah it has LEDs on the modifier keys. If it's really only $30ish I'll probably hit you up in the near future (week or two).

Ok, so first come first serve on this deal. I want to do SMD work, mostly QFP controllers, however, resistors and diodes should be just as fun.

So the deal. First person to ship me a bunch of keyboard parts gets a keyboard assembled for free (not incl shipping :( ) Done.

As an additional, a white PCB would be fun to test these new flux removal methods.

I am not sure what it's like over in the states - I have a number of "practice" boards - they are just pcbs, with a whole load of pads on them, in all different sizes, and then there is also spaces to put controllers in etc. I bought a couple of reels of passives, and a couple of different pitch atmel controllers, and practiced away on there. Is useful, as I mess about with lots of different solders/pastes and it means you can just do tests without fear of borking anything (not suggesting you will, but I do all the time :D). It's a shame you live a very long way away, otherwise I would send you some with a couple hundred passives.

You going to be smd soldering with an iron/hot air/the oven? One thing I have noticed doing pcb's with hot air - as the boards are quite long and narrow (due to the shape of keyboards) it's best to do all the board at once, and keep the whole thing warmish if you can, I did some boards where I would do the SMD stuff in rows along the board, and that warped the pcb a bit, I think as parts of the board were getting hot and some weren't and it was just causing some warping. To rectify I would just heat the whole board and apply a bit of pressure - but since doing the whole  board at a time this hasn't been as much an issue - I just try to keep the whole thing as warm as possible by moving accross the board top to bottom as I work. I am considering getting an infrared preheating station to warm boards up a bit easier.

Sorry for the wall of text :) Just some things I have noticed doing SMD.

Edit: Thanks for the referral brother mang :)

I plan on doing SMD work with an iron at first, and if too difficult, I have access to hot air.

Thanks for the info, I hadn't considered PCB warping o.o

Just found this thread. I've always dreaded soldering in the past so I've avoided it lol.

Anyway, I'm trying to build my ideal perfect keyboard, with a KBT Pure as the base.

I want to get a plate installed. Would you be able to source one and install for me? I'd pay for the part and the labor of course.

I have a KBT Pure with Red switches and Green backlighting.

I tried pming the OP as I would like his services on a few keyboards however he is muted.  :(

Anyways, here is the PM so he can get it and maybe get back to me.

Firstly I would like to say I like your work. I am in the market for some keyboard switch swaps. One keyboard is a Corsair K70 that I would like to have greens installed for a friend, the catch is that the F-row and cluster above the arrows is rubber dome and I would like those switched out as well to greens. Thankfully its a aluminum plate keyboard and I suspect that it is possible. The second keyboard will be a poker 2 with ergo clears. I could order any switch type so for your benefit (switches out of the poker) whatever switch is most valuable to you could be ordered. I would also like the plates to be modified so I can swap the switches without desoldering on both boards.

How do your prices break down for work like that?

Thanks in advance.

The K70 and K95 are fully mechanical, it's the K90 and the K60 that have rubber domes.

Tried to shoot you a PM as well, and attempted to email through your blog/site but got delivery failure. Would love to get a price for switch swap.

I'd love to switch my Filco switches from Blacks to Clears, what would you charge for that? Do you have enough switches to cover a 104-key swap? If not, how many new switches would I need to buy?
It's a Majestouch 2 Ninja, so switches are plate mounted.

Yeah, the LEDs were definitely the #1 thing that had to go for me... not a fan of green and it doesn't match at all with my other gaming peripherals that have blue LEDs.

I want to let you know that I sent you some desoldering work without permission in the form of an old Cherry keyboard. Desolder when you have time, hold onto the switches until you get unmuted and I'll pay you and figure out what I actually want to do with them when the time comes.

Thanks!

I figured I should also report my positive experience.

I destroyed a basically brand-new AT101W trying to desolder the switches.  With a thick, stiff plate and bent over switch leads, it's built to put up a real fight for disassembly.  Kmiller8 repaired the board and replaced the switches for an exceedingy fair price, and did the work far faster than I could have anticipated.

I sent a CODE MX 104 clear for spring swap and lube. It came back even better than I could have imagined: perfect feel, no more pinging, and just blissful to type on now.

You provided excellent service and were super fast to respond to respond. What quality work! I'd include a nice photo, but one can't capture the FEEL in a photo, one just has to experience it.

Thanks again! I really appreciate your time and expertise.

I am getting a Feenix Autore keyboard because of aesthetic purposes.  I would really like to get this board modified with MX Clear switches in this board and if possibly with stiffer springs in 80 - 85 cn actuations.

Like stiff springs with a strong tactile bump.

What is the process I have to get your help on this?

Meh, I really wouldn't recommend that keyboard. If you were to get the Autore, that's $160 plus $55 for switches plus $15 to ship to him, $? for modding and $15 to get it back. All in all, it takes a long time, it's a pain in the neck and very expensive as well. I would recommend buying a Code with Clears like the one that Akimbo has for sale in the Classfied right now. You get great aesthetics with the backlighting and simple design, the switches you want all for $140 shipped. You're probably going to end up paying around $250 for that MX Clear Autore. I think Feenix keyboards are hype anyway, they're just a small startup that gave some famous gamers and reviewers a couple of samples.

Also, the dude that you're looking for is still muted so you'll have to wait for that to be over if you want to actually communicate with him.

Bought the feenix for 99 plus shipping.

I looked at the Code carefully and just don't like the aesthetics at all.  Looked at Akimbo's

I have:

many model Ms (grey label one too).
have a Matias which I think is awful compared to the Apple AEK that I have from a long time (m3501 i think).
have the Ducky 3 with green switches (like switch but want the same switch with no noise if possible)
QFR with mx greens

in the past have had:

SSK
northgate omnikey

Thought about the korean customs (but dont like the available cases).

Appreciate the input though.

Hope the PCB arrived safely kmiller - let me know when you need me to send through the coin for the work involved and postage back   :thumb:
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Ok so. My new pricing works like this, $15/hour + $10 shipping.

Just as an example of how long a normal board modification would take
10m to open
45m to desolder keys + LEDs
45m to spring swap and lube
20m to resolder
5m to close and test

so just over 2 hours = $30

The reason I'm switching to this method is because a lot of services I assume take a certain amount of time, and when they go over. like. way way way. over. I'm losing a lot of valuable time for the same price as something that only takes 1/2 or 1/3 the time.

This new pricing goes into effect now!

I'm taking a break from this for a while. No more new PMs, if you've PM'd me already, I'll honor whatever work you want done. Everyone else is on your own.

Hi Kmiller,

Would you consider doing soldering work for someone in Toronto area in Canada?

absolutely, just realize the shipping costs will be higher and longer.

Can you do a Duck viper assembly with switch tuning (lubed, stickered, spring swap, sip sockets)? How long do you think that would take? I would gather all those parts and ship them to you, unless you have some parts in house.

Yeah I can do that, turnaround would probably be a day or two once I get all the parts.

I was wondering if I would have to provide you with switches/springs/stickers/lube if I wanted to swap my cherry MX Browns out for cherry MX blacks with 62g springs and lubed/stickered? Thank you for your time! ^_^

Are you taking on any new work? The_Chemist is out of action temporarily, and am inquiring as to yoru availability.

This would be for full assembly of a 75%.
