What is the most you have spent on a keycap?
« on: Tue, 12 May 2015, 19:02:29 »
And what cap was it? Id assume clacks and brocaps go for the most. Only asking because I may drop some on a independence day reaper, so it got me thinking haha. MY guess is the most ill see is 150$. Please prove me wrong! =)

In a roundabout way, about $55.

I bought a used Omnikey 101 which was a complete basket case.  However, one of the few salvagable parts of it was an ANSI-style double-shot enter key, very difficult to find with an ALPS mount.  Sadly, it's shiny and ugly.

I've never purchased a single keycap... but I'd only spend < $40.

There were some clack auctions on ebay recently where some sold for $400+. Pretty crazy...

I think I spent $50 on a cap once. I ended up trading it 1:2 though, so I'm happy with that. Most I've paid for a single cap I ended up keeping would probably be $25, but I'd be willing to pay more for one I really wanted.

All you guys with max below $50 are liars!

I've never actually bought an aftermarket Clack or Bro, all mine are from getting lucky in sales or via trades. I think the most expensive one I have would be my Noxious Ribbit, IIRC that was about $75 including shipping.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

I would like to do the same from this point on. My raffle luck should cooperate though

I'm sure you've got nothing on 3Love - some of the rarities he has make me wonder if he's assassinating Clack collectors or if he's just swimming in coin.

Some people have very large swimming pools.

I barely have a small puddle.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

$140 for an f2 blue. didn't intend to spend that much on a keycap, but i had money sitting in paypal (which i tend to consider already-spent/play money) so it was one of my "**** it" moments. in terms of value, probably not as bad as dropping $220ish for a JIS 10th Anniversary Realforce to use two keycaps from it (rshift and backspace) though.

basically all my regrats can be seen in my signature. i really enjoy it all, just wish cost would've been a bit more reasonable.

I think the most I ever spent on a single key was a streak of 20+ failures for one good key in a specific color.  Cost was probably in the $90 for materials and I'm not even sure about the cost in time.

i always wondered what you makers spend when your experimenting !

My most expensive key was $40 but it was a raffle set. I also spent $39 dollars on a GirlDC cap. I make $13.50 an hour work 45-50 hours a week and barely scrape by so clacks and such are a luxury I can't afford. I guess if I was wealthier or had a nice chunk of money I could afford to spend I would drop some serious coin on something I just HAD TO HAVE. My stance on seeing these crazy price tags is that people can do what they want with there own money. It just sucks that it perpetuates the cycle and mentality of $400 pieces of plastic. Then again that's almost a weeks pay for me ...YMMV

$250 for a clack factory

Was that the Senzunite one?

Yeah he was purdy,

I doubt i would ever drop that kind of cash again though. Maybe if CC released a cap in a diff material

I tried googling this Senzunite CC but can't find it at all. It got me very curious, do you happen to have a picture?

On a single keycap? $3 on a Cherry doubleshot red Esc. And probably will buy a $25 aluminum 6.25x spacebar, but still thinking about it.

$50.  More if you count the cost of giving one away get buy one.  Two $50 Clackvent, I added $5 on one to make it $55 and gave away a $50 Clack to get the other for $50, and one that was $50 tracked and shipped from Australia.  So pretty much retail each time.

The one that means the most to me was given to me by another member though.

Paid 100 for my first vader. Think I paid 150 for a green trans which I sold next day.

So yeah 100 for a single cap. Got my second dark side for retail. Miss it already ;_;. Need to stop selling those.

That makes me sad, mainly because someone decided it was fair to charge you that much when Bro has asked to sell at retail.  Part of the reason I've never "played the game" with artisans.  Too many people taking advantage of others.

Yeah, but it happens behind closed doors.  There's also a lot of shady people who take advantage of people and want 2:1 and 3:1 trades or 1:1 + mucho dinero because the person really wants the cap.  It's twisted and is making me really re-evaluate whether I even want more than one or two artisans...an internal debate I regularly go through.

Bro Bors (and other Bro Caps) are not supposed to be markupped at all!

I've paid $65 for a Clack recently.

That seemed expensive compared to my first clack, an OG Tri, from EK, for $16 I think it was. Hahaha. I thought that was crazy-extravagant back then!!
I'm back.

Of course none of the 'great' collectors dropped in and shared...

I was hoping of tales of 500$ dollar caps in closed door transactions and some other such things.  :-X

To be fair, who wants to publicly brag about spending thousands on keycaps :)

A few have talked about how much they spent behind closed doors.

I've been told some numbers through PM but it isn't information that I'd feel good sharing.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

About 50 cents, when buying a cluster of four wasd replacement caps to have a different profile for the W key.

Buying artisan caps for lots of money is an alien concept to me.

$3.... GMK Red ESC, although I have entered one of the Elite Keyboards Clack draw rounds. I ordered a $5 BSP Red ESC, but they were out of stock, so I got a refund.

Got my most valuable cap (Cinnn Iron man) in a giveaway (thank you Spamray!) and it holds pride of place on my ergo board. The only backlit cap on that board and the only artisan I own (so far). I will not pay above the artists' price for an artisan cap on principal (helps me limit my keyboard spending to new board parts and Group Buy keycap sets)...

I have spent a decent amount in a single keycap set Group buy, though, and way too much in total.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.
