Yeah, sorry about the price. Low quantity means it'll be higher. I don't plan to do these small runs as a usual.

I split the case/plate price as standard as people do get multiple.

From IC: 'This is not X60 V2. That'll be ran in the future, so don't worry if you miss this one.'

And yes I believe he said V2 will be a larger run with some slight aesthetic differences if I'm not mistaken? I think it was around 50 but I could very well be pulling that out my ass.

Looks good!

Will the PCB being offered be the USB-C QMK-compatible one mentioned in the IC and otherwise be similar to the 268 PCB?

Also, will the plate support a universal layout or will it be the HHKB style one shown in the renders?

Between having extra holes in the plate and my lack of care for 1.25u bottom row, this is the result :))

Seriously considering having that as the only bottom row on the PCB too. Clean PCBs are the best. Would love to have a single layout PCB + plate combo  :'(

Meh, I prefer a normal backspace for aesthetic reasons, but the rest of it I totally use an hhkb layout.

Yeah I'll do it for all layout options left. I suspect that split rshift/backspace will stay and lshift will go.

xondat,

2 questions if you have time :

1) will the brass plate be mirror finish only?  I really like the look of the brass plate from the previous run.

2) do you have any pics you could post of the dark grey and silver finishes next to each other? Or maybe of the silver next to a classic beige/9009 colorway?

  • Which brass plates are you referring to? I've only done brass for 268 and they're mirror (the same as this).
  • Dark gray with 9009 below. I don't have a silver case to compare, but there are many on Google etc.

Also thanks for the pic. I thought that may have been silver.  The dark grey seems super dark in some pics, and almost silver in others depending on lighting.

Oh I see. It's the gold aluminum plate, they came out pretty close to rose golden.

I've asked for the dark gray to be darker in the 268 run, and will keep the same thing going with these. X60 dark gray was super nice, so should be closer to that than the sample.

Just wondering you mentioned polycarb plate in the IC. Are you still going to offer that as a plate material?

I did? Probably didn't mean to. I doubt I will unless there is suddenly significant interest.

Mounting will stay the same for when I release X60 V2, so plates with more variety will be available then.

I think the KLE link is a bit borked.

Yeah my bad, seemed to work some times and then it didn't. Try incognito, otherwise just make one from scratch :)

Thanks! Incognito did the trick.

Seemed to work perfectly if copy and pasted but not if clicked =S

Wow, would you drop a hint of the 280 and 220?

Also, speaking of the surface of the case, the R1 X60 has a rather reflective and smooth surface which is cool. A more matte finish is also nice and reflects the light more uniformly. (https://imgur.com/a/gG0Yu X60 vs Viper) Since this is a new factory, do you have any specific preference?

a more matte finish is often a mark of lower quality anodizing

basically, good anodizing should feel and act like a nicely polished stone countertop

so a matte finish might be something you want to achieve with cerakote rather than anodizing

but i'm not a metals engineer, so what do i know

Matte finish and most anodizing finishes just have to do with how the metal is treated before it's anodized. It dependent on if the surface is bead blasted (and what size glass beads if so) vs caustic soda vs flouride acid bath, etc.

The baths can also run into issues with overetching on machined parts, so if anything getting a clean matte finish is harder than a non matte one.

You should start differentiating materials between individual parameters that actually matter, and not between "good" or "bad".

Different anodized surfaces have different properties, which makes them useful for certain applications.
Those surfaces are a function of various reaction conditions. (If you want to learn more: https://materialsdata.nist.gov/bitstream/handle/11115/221/Anodizing.pdf?sequence=1)
The only property that somewhat matters for custom keyboards is surface hardness, but I would argue that cosmetics is a far more important factor.

Was the plan in the end to have USB-C PCBs? Or are we still being offered the ol' B.face (nothing against the old n' gold but I want to make the transition to USB-C eventually).

I see that Doyu has come out with a USB-C board but as it's still in its early revisions I thought I'd hold off on it.

I see that Doyu has come out with a USB-C board but as it's still in its early revisions I thought I'd hold off on it.

I want to personally transition to USB C, so all my future boards including this will have it. It's just a better connector, and I see no point waiting for everyone to get cables (either the consumer or maker has to push it, and the maker can make the switch happen a lot easier).

B.face is kind of useless with this. It's a $60 PCB with a more restricting firmware. I know that's the price because of the LEDs, but they aren't useful with a build like this so it's basically $60/bad firmware vs $30/great firmware. Obvious choice to me.

I plan to use this same PCB with X60 V2 so I'd like it to be perfect, even if it means delaying this shipment or sending them separately (which I doubt either will be the case, as PCB prototyping and making changes is very quick). It won't be too complex or over the top, so should be easy.

Nothing to report as things slow down because of CNY. I imagine things will start shortly after they're back, and I'll report with a estimated completion date when I get it :p

Also I finally compared V1, R, and V2 (took me way too long). See the album here: https://imgur.com/a/pGkB9

R is a combination of V1 aesthetics, and V2 construction. :D

Well it's identical to R, just 2mm less on each side and a larger edge finish. :))

But yes, main change with the internals was switching from M3 to M2, and having a platform that I'm able to do super thin or larger bezels.

Will this be "true high profile" and not have any gaps or switches showing with key caps mounted?

Still CNY, so nothing new on production side.

Works well because I need to make a few design alterations due to small issues found with 268. As described in the 280/220 thread, if 268 was V2, X60 R/280/220 will be V2.1. This won't change production estimates or anything, just that I'm submitting a different file.

Going to be wrapping up the USB-C only decision by Sunday too, so will be following up PMs when I wake up :p

Hi,

For a few months, after all users agreed, all updates on this buy have been on my Discord server. I've now closed the group buy channel for this buy, and all discussion will be here.

The reasoning: This thread (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=96596) was posted -- the intent seems to be to make group buy issues public. I addressed the images here (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=96596.msg2637473#msg2637473).

None of these issues will be present with this buy, as all have been resolved with the factory.

I want to apologize for how careless this may look. I will continue to do my best, and from now on, be completely transparent with the kits.

Thanks, Anthony.

P.S. I will have a public update on what has been going on with this buy.

Is it possible to holtite the pcb?

Are the plates already cut or could I change the layout one last time?

I don't think there is enough space under the PCB for them.

It's only ever been a universal layout :)

Switched over to a custom PCB. I will have about double the ordered amount, so will always be enough spare.

There's really not going to be enough room for hotlites? That's a shame..

Also, maybe I'm tired from work, but are you saying it isn't compatible with standard 60% pcb's?

Thanks

Don't know about Hotlites.

It might be but the case is designed properly for the PCB that comes with it.

Mixture between X60 V1 plate (on top), some brass X60 R plates (middle), and 268.2 brass plates (bottom).

Various cases. I think the right hand side is the X60 Rs.

I am away 7th - 10th September so nothing will ship around then (if stuff arrives before). Most likely stuff will ship 12th onwards sorta thing. It's hard to say when manufacturers don't give a solid date, plus shipping etc. We're close though :-*

Oh so it won't be Phillips screws this time. I've both metric & imperial hex keys ready so hopefully I'll never strip my screws again.

They're metric M2 hex. I did slot for the last one but people complained about slipping and scratching the case so thought I'd go back to these as these look the second best.

Bad news inc.

I got the hex keys and was testing the threads out. M2 screws do not fit into the bottom pieces. I asked my contact and he said "The holes are M2 threaded holes, the loose problem must be caused by several times anodizing".

This applies to all bottom pieces unfortunately. I'll be sending them back and they'll make new replacements.

As a general statement, I won't be using this factory again, although I think that goes without saying.

Threads? Bottom piece? Doesn't the bottom have through holes which could only be too tight?

It’s where the weight screws into.

Title: Re: [GB] Noxary X60 R (Cases Arrived)

M2.5 is quite a difference already. You might be able to just cut a bigger thread if it isn't too close to the wall

Probably a dumb question but would it not be possible to just find a screw that fits?

Not a dumb question.

I’d have to modify the weights to fit larger screws through, plus the “M2” holes probably aren’t any specific spec e.g. M2.5, M3 etc.

In general I expect working parts to my specification from a factory, if they can’t deliver then I need to return the faulty parts. Modifying what I already have would be a lot of work plus the factory would get away with it.

@xondat so only the bottom case pieces will be remade? won't this increase the chances of the top and bottom pieces not matching in color/anodization shade?

Think so, and they know I want matching so they should be able to match it considering they have all the parts.

Seems screws and me just don't get along, eh? First the X60 was wrecked by its screws, now the X60 R needs fixing for its screws, and when I just put in Fox coilovers in my truck last week the sway bar bolts stripped out all the threads inside the frame so I drove around without a swaybar and now it's in the shop getting the frame nuts fixed because of a few screws.

I don't mind waiting for it done right, man. :thumb: I mean, I still need to build my Klippe...

I think I'll have these in about a week.

The plan is approximately to quality check them, then build them all before going on a short trip (7th - 11th). I'll be able to hand deliver one of the cases on this trip (and convince him to leave some feedback or whatever), but otherwise should be ready to mail them all out when I get back. I do have one spare blue gray 60%, so PM if you're interested. I'll send out shipping forms/invoices just before I start building them, and hopefully all are paid by the time I get back.

I'm hopeful but cautious still. The manufacturer hasn't had any major problems, and when there have been minor problems, they replaced instantly. The anodizing on the T60s they produced was damn flawless, and the only problems I had were some hook marks on the inside, but those shouldn't happen again. I'm sure there will be a long story time after these are sent out, but let's get them shipped first :)

I've QC'd and packed the following:

001
002
003
004
005
006 (delivered)
007

I'll send out shipping invoices shortly. These will be sent out first to make sure no problems with packaging etc, then the rest can be sorted. Only issues I've found with the new aluminum parts is that the color matching is decently far off, which is annoying, but it's something that can be improved for the future.

Factory rep said they get back on Monday and can review their actions then so going to wait till then. I should've expanded initially - it seems like the finish is slightly different, as they reflect light differently. The color saturation also is difference, so adding these two issues together can create quite a big difference in the worst cases.

In the mean time I'll pack the silver and pink boards (which are fine color wise, the others have varying results) so there is the option to start sending some out. Silver/pink boards are:

005
008
013
014
016

Are there any pics that highlight the color variance? If it's not that bad, I may not care.

Let's wait and see before jumping to conclusions. The factory have been good with fixing things in the past.

I'll post pictures depending on what sort of action they want to take.

Invoiced the follow for shipping:

005
008
013
014
016
018

I'll get them packed over the weekend and hopefully have them collected Monday.

Invoiced the rest of you for invoicing. Some people didn't have a PCB at all, so I've added 1 on at the original cost. Let me know if something is incorrect (please don't pay if it is).

Regarding the color difference, the factory have said it's within their suppliers limits. The main points were that the piece thickness affects the duration in the anodizing baths, and beacuse it's all manual, it leads to instability of the results. They also mentioned it's to do with the aluminum batch quality, so different batches can yield different results.

Apologies for not shipping the above last week, something happened Monday night that I've been trying to overcome.

Anyway, I'll be packing the rest over the weekend and keep you all posted.

I'd like to move to using digital invoices so I will ship one (Vadur's) as a test. I would rather to be charged once instead of 7 extra times :) Will be collected tomorrow and then should arrive by end of week. Should speed up the label process a little bit for the future.

Everyone paid their shipping invoice, so thank you for being prompt on that. Once Vadur's board arrives (hopefully issue free), then will get the rest out.

Yes, I will start packing and sending the rest. Will be working in invoice number order, however most are easy after the first 10 due to no extra parts. I think I can have 002-009 done this week, and 010-020 done early next week.

Correction, will be Tuesday since I want the 1st proper batch to arrive (which is mostly on Monday) and get some quick feedback on packaging etc.

Received my X60R today and really happy with how it turned out, the silver looks and feels great and the screws came out with no issues.

It's getting late so I didn't have time to finish building but I will be sure to get some pics as well as post my thoughts on the board and how it feels once it's built. I've been really enjoying the lower height on the 268 and so I'm expecting this to feel similar if not as good.

In the meantime here are some crappy lighting pics I took.

Will preface everything I say about this by saying I was not in the GB from the start and didn't follow everything about this except skimming over the thread a few days ago:

Just got mine, initial impressions are I am impressed. Color matching between top and bottom don't seem too bad for me. Minor scratch by the USB port and on the plate but other than that it seems great. Going to get it built today and will get some nice pictures tomorrow when I get my desk cleaned up :P

How do I program this thing, and how do I turn on the backlight? I'm assuming it has backlight support based on the resistors?

What does the PCB look like?

If the PCB supports QMK, then you need to program RGB_TOG onto a key for underglow (RGB on the underside of the PCB) or BL_TOGG for per-switch backlighting.

I am basically worthless when it comes to programming keyboards. I see there is the noxary 268 pcb on qmk configurator but there is no noxary 260 pcb (which is what this is). I'll get it figured out soon I guess lol

It just has stock retooled mx blacks because this is my gaming keyboard

Things I like:
Very low profile, it is impressive how small this board is especially given that it isn't a tray mount
Seams between top and bottom are very small and line up great
Finish is very smooth (noticeably nicer than 360c, mira, lz gh v2, etc)
Heavy (4lbs built)

Things that could be improved:
Plate is pretty snug inside of the top half of the case, have to push down on it somewhat hard to get it to go all the way into the top
Plate switch holes were on the slightly snug side, not too hard to press switches into though (might just be a preference thing)
Little scratches here and there (One scratch on back side of case, shown in 2nd pic. Scratch on plate by the noxary logo. Scratch on brass plate on bottom of board, shown in 4th pic.)
Resistors maybe could be tweaked:
I think the resistors could be changed to allow for better backlighting. Right now my LEDs are incredibly dim even at the highest setting, dimmer than how bright these LEDs were on the lowest possible setting on the 1UP 60 PCB they were on before.
When I have more time I will try to swap them out for something else.

How is the color matching between top and bottom?
It is pretty good imo. Obviously not perfect, but a lot better than I was expecting. Most of the time there is a shadow that goes down the front or side edge of the case that makes it impossible to tell anyway.

There is a color tone difference on mine, with the top half leaning more towards a reddish hue and the bottom half with a more yellow hue I would say. You can kinda tell in the 2nd pic, ultimately it is what it is. I will say when the case was on it's way to me I had considered that I could either find a place to reanodize it or have it cerakoted, but after having it in front of me I have 0 interest in doing so now. Maybe some cases are worse than mine as far as color matching but mine is acceptable.

Thanks for such in depth.

On the improvement side, it's worth noting that only the top and bottom pieces were made new at this great manufacturer. The weights and plates were made by a pretty crap place. The small scratch on the back of the case is interesting, I'll pass it onto my rep but not sure what happened there.

Regarding the resistors, good to know. I think this is the first keyboard from me in a while I've seen with full backlighting lol

I finally took some pictures, but I'm still busy sorting...

(Attachment Link)

Brilliant picture, thanks!

aside of the weird black smudges and circles on my weight, quite happy. built with lubed red pandas.

(Attachment Link)

ignore the tmo50

TMO is hard to ignore, it's a great lil board :p
Ah that is interesting to know. The weight and plate aren't bad per se, it's just that the plate is probably ever so slightly too large where it slots in.

Honestly there could be a chance that scratch on the back came from the original owner, it just seems like it might be under the ano since it didn't take any color off the board.

I'll try to order some resistors and see what works best, any suggestions?

Still though, very happy with the board, it's going to get a lot of use, that is for sure!  ;D

So the caps lock LED is comparatively a lot brighter than the rest of the board. I will investigate this, maybe just a setting I could change in QMK instead of swapping resistors.

Bad phone pic makes rest of the board seem brighter than it really is but:

I received the board today and wanted to clarify some things. I tried digging through the post history (briefly) but didn't find anything.

1) Was there a reason/justification for why all the weights seem to be 01 out of 20?
2) Were there supposed to be bumpons included in the packaging?

2) there is, some are on top of the foam, others are inside the package.

Everything else turn out good?  :)

It's 1 out of 20 because there are 20 60Rs and the one you have is 1 of them. c:

Yep it's a pretty common practice to number things like that.

Ah, I see the bumpons now (you even circled it!). Did you send out a form or something asking everyone if they were okay with all the weights saying 1/20? I honestly could've filled it out and forgotten or missed it, I just wanted to ask so I know why, is all.

I think everything else turned out good, I haven't tested the pcb yet but physically I see no flaws/dents/anodizing errors. :)

No, iirc all the details were decided in private then I just saw who was interested. :)

Finally finished building my X60R today and I just so happened to receive Red Riot today as well so I figured I may as well try it on for a little while.

[attachimg=1]

Loving this board so far very solid feeling and I must say the Reset switch on top has to be one of the most genius things I've ever seen on a keyboard and is a god send considering X60R has 10 screws holding it together.

Concerning my anodization the Silver came out great and both halves match together perfectly, probably one of the benefits of picking a safe color like Silver.

Overall I must say that I am quite happy with this board and hope Xondat keeps up with this quality with his future projects. 10/10

Yeah the reset switch is pretty cool. I've always preferred a physical switch over one hidden inside a layer, so this one is great. And only need to remove the caps lock key.

They are reasonably close in colour. What you see after Photoshop is not what you get irl. :)) I wanted to emphasize the blue.

A few years ago, I would have been really irked to see something like this. Somewhere along the line, I learned to accept that life has inevitable imperfections, and more often than not, it costs way more in terms of money, time, well-being and relations to correct the imperfection than it's worth. If I was still that person, I'd still be bent over at my station right now resoldering the left shift key, which is rotated a few degrees clockwise unless I "tweak" it for photos. If I was still that person, I wouldn't be modding my dream truck right now and would instead be trying to throw money into the water to get into another one (which, in 2019, regardless of make, would be prone to just as many problems), just because it has a few "issues" that require a bit of time and effort to correct.

Plus, what would have been my X60 was utterly destroyed and unusable in that state. Aside from the colour, the quality on the X60 R is impeccable. I'll gladly take it.

If you read xondat's posts on the 14th and 15th of February you would see that he tried to see if the factory could fix the issues that he had seen. It's not really on him that this was within their tolerances, but hey don't have to read a thread to call someone out, eh?

I take it that this "jessica" is some breed of shill, and being labelled as such is supposed to hurt my feelings?  :blank:

You're smart, so try this one; it's called reading comprehension. I've already clarified previously that the difference between top and bottom is minimal irl, but I took the opportunity to draw out the blue when I was working on my photos afterwards, because I liked the vibrant look. Look at the other Blue Gray boards in this buy and you'll realize that the colour is far more subdued.

It's not a requisite that you "allow [your]self to think" that the top and bottom are identical. I never made that claim, either. Were you part of the R buy?

Looks clean - the mismatch could be considered a bit unfortunate, but if it doesn't bother the customer, then it's all good :thumb:

There are 200 extra sets and the manufacturer told me they didn't have budget to fix the existing ones but ok

Keycaps are very different from keyboards

and further to the point people have been tape tricking gmk caps for years and nobody has rioted about it cause the fix is piss easy

i am short the three thousand dollars it would take to get the molds up to the standard you're looking for since i already forfeited my share of the profit (about $700) to actually have the sets made

to get the keycaps fully replaced it would cost about 10x that, to reanodize/refinish a keyboard it costs about $100

considering xondat's openness with his profits on his gbs i am fairly sure he has that kicking around

when it comes to that last question, at least red riot came out the right color and yolch is negligibly close. it's also worth noting that less that, i'm not aware of any complaints about red riot/yolch

if you wanna continue this piece of discourse please PM me, i didn't intend to threadcrap nearly as hard as i've ended up doing.

i honestly should have pm'd xondat instead of posting this but i didn't wanna unblock him on discord

there is no evidence that you tried to correct this issue

Read the thread instead of just commenting for post count ffs

what was stopping you from getting the boards refinished locally?

and did you message the recipient of that board to make sure they were OK with the quality?

Pretty ****in rich coming from someone who is bumbling their way through a keycap gb (without manufacturing any extras) and telling people with problems to use tape/plastic on their loose caps, simply because they "dont want to deal with the manufacturer" again.

There are 200 extra sets and the manufacturer told me they didn't have budget to fix the existing ones but ok

Keycaps are very different from keyboards

and further to the point people have been tape tricking gmk caps for years and nobody has rioted about it cause the fix is piss easy

There is no evidence that you tried to correct this issue.

Whats stopping you from getting the keycaps replaced then?

And did you message the recipient of the caps to make sure they were ok with the quality?

i am short the three thousand dollars it would take to get the molds up to the standard you're looking for since i already forfeited my share of the profit (about $700) to actually have the sets made

to get the keycaps fully replaced it would cost about 10x that, to reanodize/refinish a keyboard it costs about $100

I'm negative over $5000 from this buy.

I haven't had any complaints about X60 R from owners. You're the only person to complain actually.

Now stop thread crapping. Thanks.

while all of that was genuinely funny to read, i'm glad exanile is happy. your shots also show just how nice the spacing tolerances are between the caps and the top piece. the isometric shot also shows how nicely the leftmost column of keycaps' bottoms align meet the height of the top piece.

We all posting to reddit too, huh?   :D

I love the white countertop. I have a giant white island that I don't make nearly enough use of for photos. In those photos, it's almost like your board is white micro-arc; the surface looks so smooth. Spot-on use of Muted.  :thumb:

So I swapped out the resistors to 150 ohm (were 400ish before)
0 impact on the brightness. I am clearly not doing something right lol

could it be something related to the qmk setup?

Yeah I tried that and nothing I did helped.
