[GB] Noxary X60
« on: Fri, 10 June 2016, 16:33:49 »
Major Update regarding this buy here.

More
The Rundown

All parts have been affected by poor manufacturing and no quality control. Despite constant reassurances that what I requested had made it to production, nothing actually did. I'm in early talks with the manufacturer and will be trying to solve this. I've listed things in as much detail as initially necessary.

The Problems

There are 10 unique types of problems that occurred throughout this production run of X60. I've outlined them and given the necessary info that I've gathered when looking at all the parts including some pictures to give you an idea of what they are.

Top scratches
Approximate affected: 75%
Info: Varying sizes, most apparent on coloured parts. Pictures show the majority of variation.

Show Image

Show Image

Top hook points
Approximate affected: 100%
Info: Manufacturer ignored my request to place hook points on the bottom side (which would be hidden when assembled) and instead they are inside. Not visible when using the keyboard.

Show Image

Bottom scratches
Approximate affected: 80%
Info: Same as top scratches but in larger "chunks". Also, to my surprise, it looks like they've chosen Sharpie over anodizing on a few spots on a very small number of black cases.

Show Image

Bottom hook points
Approximate affected: 25%
Info: Only really affects 3 corners on black parts.

Show Image

Bottom inside machining marks
Approximate affected: 80%
Info: I didn't really check this as its hidden inside and wouldn't be worth replacing them solely on this.

Show Image

Plate laser start points
Approximate affected: 90%
Info: Doesn't affect switches in any way, just utterly annoying that it isn't perfect. Apparently unavoidable with their laser cutting machine. Only aluminum plates are affected.

Show Image

Plate scratches
Approximate affected: 70%
Info: Same sort of occurrence like the top/bottom pieces. Random scratches.

Plate hook points
Approximate affected: 100% (only aluminum parts)
Info: On the Esc and backspace key cutouts, very small marks.

Show Image

Show Image

Weight through holes
Approximate affected: 9 standard weights
Info: No idea on this one apart from 9 standard (Limited to 100 Cases) weights have smaller through holes.

Show Image

Damaged bottom pieces

Affected: 1 blue, 2 black bases
Info: Seems to be damaged from shipping.

Show Image

Finances

It is worth noting that the boards are paid off fully - there are no more funds to just get some more cases made or offer partial/full refunds. I've invested several thousands of dollars to try and make this happen - we're all out for the moment. I won't be able to pay for replacement parts myself and there is also no way to retrieve funds spent on this run.

Regarding spot selling, extra plates and shipping invoices

I'm still happy to allow people to sell their spot through me. I will presume that anyone buying a spot after this post has read it, and they fully understand what they're getting into. If you'd like to sell your spot, please email me @ support@noxary.co and include as much information about your slot just to make things easier. I'll then list it here and allow people to email me if they want to buy it.

I will not be moving forward with extra plates until I have a new manufacturer & a good majority of cases have been delivered.

There is no need for shipping invoices to be sent out, so they won't. If you haven't paid shipping yet, and you choose to take a case with imperfections, then you will be invoiced at the normal amount.

Moving Forward

I've been speaking to a few people that have lots of experience running buys in order to figure out what the best solution to this is. I am still in early talks with the factory, but if the communication breaks down and I can no longer work with them, there is a long term plan to replace parts (I will get into this later if it gets to this point). For now, I will catalogue the cases with pictures and descriptions so that I can offer them to people that would like their cases with the finishing problems. If anyone has any suggestions on how to replace parts, then please suggest them with consideration to all the detail I've given.

To make it clear - you can contact me (I will post a form or something similar when ready) if you would like to receive your order with the outlined problems. If you've decided that you don't want a damaged case, please continue to be patient as I am working on getting replacement parts as soon as possible, but be aware there is no time scale for now.

I'm sorry that it's gone this way - I will fix this, and there will be 100 X60s delivered, no matter how long it takes.

Awesome bud!

In for a normal 60% if you can get a nice 60% PCB that runs TMK and has LEDs.

Can you engrave something cool on the weight?

I'm looking to get a nice 75% and missed out on Octagon as well. Definitely interested!
edit: I think someone else is running a hhkb case interest check as well, not sure how different yours would be.

This looks fantastic. The first render looks like it will support an arrow cluster on the bottom right  :thumb:.

Would love to see the controller chip on a seperate board, think Teensy/Adafruit Feather/etc. This would raise the cost, but also means we can add our own controller and write our own firmware. What do you think?

HHKB plox

Would it be possible to make the 60% keyboards support premade PCBs like the GH60 or NerD 60? You mentioned the lack of cutouts for the USB connection, and I figured that's the only thing you need to modify to fit the 60% PCB standard.

Would also be interested in engraving something neato for the weight  ^-^

I'd prefer a 60%/HHKB layout for this board.

Personally, having a RGB diffuser like the one present on Duck's Blackbird would be great.

Would be down for a hhkb layout, or if it's even an option to vote for arrowed 60%.

I don't like how the bottom is just an angled square extending the front tbh tho.
Throwing in another angle on the back would make the design look a lot more elegant.

Hubble Mira has a angled bottom in the opposite direction for example.

Once I figure out what to put, sure.

Accommodated!

Depending on the layout it's unlikely but I'll make sure to use a PCB that supports customization.

Done.

60% PCBs are universal so it will support the standard 60% PCB.

The renders look like it has a steep angle on it -- what's the angle of the board?
8 degrees.

Other than the USB location, the plate is mounted to the sides of the case, rather than the PCB being mounted to the bottom of the case. So that would need to be modified as well but I think this was done for increased rigidity. Same as how you see it on the TKL ones.

It's already done in another IC by Dotdash32

I'll throw it out there as it's been mentioned a couple of times.

These are two very different cases. His is a normal 60% mounting style, with the PCB screwing into the case, identical for the traditional 60%. My PCB mounts to the plate, which mounts to the top case, similar to the great customs. His aim is to replicate the HHKB case but for MX whereas mine is just because people like the layout. Finally price points are completely different. To quote him "the goal is sub 100". Mine is a lot, lot more.

I'm going to be putting a questionnaire up in a few hours, it'll help if people fill it out.

Questionnaire is live. All but a couple of questions are optional, so only answer the questions you think are relevant (although I'd appreciate you answering all questions).

I finished a complete remodel of the 60% form factors and will be doing a 75% remodel tomorrow. The remodel is just to make sure everything is working properly.

This is pretty epic Xondat. Will totally be in for the WKL case. Want some blockers in my life. Also doubly down if the PCB has some TMK love behind it.

These are the two weight shapes I'm deciding between - input would be appreciated. I made a strawpoll here. Please note that I haven't added tilt/chamfers/fillets yet. Screw holes aren't final.

Thank you to everyone that filled the questionnaire in so far.
