[IC] Black SA blanks
« on: Tue, 11 July 2017, 14:22:51 »
I have wanted a set of sculpted SA blanks for a long time, and it seems to me that a group buy is long overdue.

I think a maximalist layout is not a bad idea considering the price will hopefully be lower than that of a set of double shot or dyed caps.

I was tentatively considering two kits, one for fairly normal layouts from full sized to 60%, and one for more uncommon layouts

Let me know if you think coverage is lacking in any way, or what color is a good idea. Everything is up for debate including how (where?) the group buy is held.

If you're going to do this in black, do NN. I think that is the most common black from SA sets as it was featured in Pulse and Modern Selectric.

NN is the closest thing SP has to a true BLACK for SA. Unfortunately, not all row profiles are available for all key sizes. Row 1 is particularly hard to find. There may even be some sizes for which there are no rows available at all right now.

Instabuy. Please let's do this. The only thing I need that I don't see is an extra left shift (to fill out an fc660c).

Are the capabilities for blank keycap molding somehow different from double shot? Every key in the image has been produced with a double shot legend AFAIK.

There is an extra in the second to last row, the last key. I’ll update the image with sizes for clarity.

No, I was just stupid. I thought you were asking about SA blanks available from the PMK webstore. Apologies for the confusion.

I would buy this set! I was trying to put together an SA blank set from crapbags. This is much more attractive.

I'd probably buy as long as price wasn't too bad. Though the real question is would blanks still have 9month queue lol

I would definitely be interested if pricing and timing is reasonable. Not really interested if it's going to be $70+ and ship in a year.

OP said "sculpted SA" and SP currently only has row 3 molds for PBT SA. So these would have to be ABS.

oh interesting, I didn't realize the same molds couldn't be used for the different plastics. That's unfortunate.

Hmm, well I've only had experience with cheap, thin abs, maybe I could live with sp abs. Are you sure the molds can't be used for either plastic, though? I know kbdfans is offering a blank SA 22333 set, I believe from maxkeys, who has sp's old molds.

Honestly, I really like the feel of the ABS on the SA profile. I haven't tried their new PBT SA sets yet (waiting on sculpted profile). But ABS is not a bad thing as many people make it out to be.

Maxkey does not have the molds for many of the keys in the current configuration, so it would have to be SP I think.

Ahh, fair enough. The only reason I'd prefer maxkey is the price. I'm definitely in for a SP set of blanks.

Hi all - I spoke with ullr and we're consolidating the thread to a new IC here: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=90680.0

I have received some quotes and timing from SP already so we're trying to get this going and hopefully start a GB in August if there is interest.
