IBM Model F from (modelfkeyboards.com)
« on: Tue, 18 July 2017, 15:04:13 »
Hi,

I was interested in purchasing a new IBM Model F from: https://www.modelfkeyboards.com/
Anyone have any ideas about the build quality(hopefully not like unicomp)?
Any input would be great.

Thanks

Hey dude,

Check out the group buy page here, tons of information (probably more than most people need): https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=79141.0

TL;DR it's gonna be awesome :)

It must be a very very well built keyboard, made to last forever. As regard finish, I'm not so sure. After seeing the attached photo #1, I would be worried about the paint job. Also, the keycaps look like the Unicomp's keycaps, which don't have a perfect finish either on the bottom edges (see photo #2) and their legends sometimes are a bit off-centered (noticed the keycap with the word "pause", for example). They they also tend to rotate a little when installed (at least in Model M), so sometimes they do not look perfectly aligned. However, it would be a dream to have a brand new Model F. I would really consider spending all that money if it had a more functional layout.

I really hope that the overall construction is way better then unicomp.

Entropia the first photo you linked is not of my project.  The second is a photo of the very first prototype.  Check the www.modelfkeyboards.com/blog for more recent prototypes photos that corrected those early issues.  Unicomp keys are on the prototypes; XT quality keys from brand new molds will be used on the production units.

Ellipse, please forgive me for posting photos of products that do not reflect the final quality of your keyboards. Sorry and thank you for clarifying. :'( It's great to know that there will be new keycaps. Do you have any future plans for new form factors, maybe a 100%, tenkeyless or 1800? Or at least a compact layout but with the function keys row?

I feel like I came late to this party, and I'm still kind of a noob here, so...  I have a few small-but-nagging questions too.

Apple key modifiers?  I see them as an option in the store, but it's not entirely clear if those are substituted on the keyboard when it's assembled, or if they are extra keycaps that I can swap in later.  Would like to have both sets on hand.  Actually, it seems like quite a few keycap options that have been proposed aren't in the store yet?  I'm guessing those will crop up later?

In a similar vein...  I understand that you've chosen not to go with Unicomp-made keycaps, but will they still be compatible?  I mean, if Unicomp have something I'd like, how well could I expect it to fit and work?

Happy hacking keyboard layouts?  I think I understand the split right-shift key, and having a Fn key there seems like a good idea.  (Then everything on the bottom row can stay symmetrical as it should be.)  Not sure about the top row options.

I see that some layouts have an Esc key in the upper-left, some don't.  I know these are programmable, but...  If there is no labeled Esc key, what is the usual or default way of handling that?  Fn-tilde?  Does the HHKB upper row result in Esc on the left, tilde and backslash on the right, and backspace moved down a notch, to just above Enter?  Same as a WhiteFox, for example?  I could get used to that.

It would be nice to get more information about programming.  All I got from the website is that "It's fully programmable!" and "I know nothing about the programming."  OK, who does?  I'm a programmer myself, so I'm pretty sure I can handle it, however it works....  but I'm curious.

I may be responsible for some of the confusion due to my mockups of various key sets. If so, I apologize. I am jumping back and forth between the SBS/Beam Spring project and the F XT repro legends for Ellipse so things are a bit hectic at the moment. Ellipse and I will get around to clearing the up the keycap situation eventually.

Caps for Model F or M are the same and I am sure the boards will be compatible with Unicomp or vintage IBM as far as fitment goes.

HHKB layout: http://i.imgur.com/wg1002D.jpg

This is the 'official' layout and I believe Ellipse will be programming the Fn layer to match for those who have ordered this layout. You can, as you noted, change the layout so that ESC is now Fn+Tilde (or vice versa) if you did not opt for the split backspace option as well.

You get the Apple/Mac set preinstalled if you order those keys.  You also get the other keys as well.

Yes Unicomp keys will work.

Here is the open source code, gui, and firmware being used:  http://downloads.cornall.co/ibm-capsense-usb/

Yes you can put either Esc or `~ on the top left (any 1U key can go there).  Yes Fn+key would be for Esc, or you could have the key labeled Esc and Fn+Esc would equal the other functions.

For any more questions please head over to the project thread:  https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=79141
