Title: I Hydro Dipped my QFR Case
Post by: livingspeedbump on Wed, 25 March 2015, 15:14:26

www.morbidstix.com did the dipping for me. it was a custom job, so there is nothing on the website about keyboard cases or where to order, just shoot him an email if you would like it done. He said it would cost $30 plus shipping, which I thought was a very fair price. This included a base coat, pattern, clear glossy finish. I was very pleased with it, and it feels very durable as he did multiple clear coats.

Looks really good.  Hopefully it stands up to use (statement born of ignorance about hydrodipping durability).

That came out really well!

Actually it kinda reminds me of my first computer that had a plastic case with ends coloured like wood :))

This is the first time I've ever had a keyboard case hydro dipped, though I do have a game controller and a mouse shell that have been hydro dipped, and both have held up perfectly well with moderately heavy use. There are a few coats of clear gloss as the final finish, so that shouldn't wear down. (fingers crossed). This was really a test run, I really wanted to see if this was possible and looked good to get a lighter bamboo coloured finish on a KUL case to go with the 1976 keycap set :)

Thanks! Yeah it does almost have a "toy" look to it, I think I'll be going with a matte clear coat finish next time to see how that looks.

I don't personally know the guy, but I've gone to him for multiple custom orders and he always has really good pricing. Definitely would recommend him if wanted to try having something hydro dipped.

Best cheap way to customize your keyboard :)

I have a few KULs and love them because I can get top shells so easily

It's either this or waiting for a aluminum top, which doesn't sound likely. They even offer the Multi-cam pattern so who needs to lust after a Filco now?

its hydrodipped like the title says, that is what gives it the pattern. Its still just a plastic case.   :)

This was originally for 1979, or made in anticipation of it. I think i sold it before it ever came though and did my second board for it, which I recently gifted to my buddy in japan :)

How well would this work with an HHKB do you think?

Might want to do mine o.o

I've actually thought about doing mine as well! It would work just as good, easily. :) I was just going to wait until CAPT and I fix up the HHKB metal case and make something respectable, then figured I'd have this done to my old case.

A wooden HHKB case would look classy as hell!

Sorry for kinda resurrecting this thread, LSB, but I was wondering the same thing about hydro dipping an HHKB. The worry for me is that the layer of film on the case mounted housings. I wonder if that would create any issues. What do you think?

I had MorbidStix dip my KUL case based on this post.  My observations is that there is some thickness added by the process.  While the hydrodip transfer layer is only a few microns, I think the clear coat and primer that MorbidStix uses in addition adds some thickness.  That said, unless the part has some extremely tight clearance, you should be fine.  I don't know what the HHKB clips look/feel like.

A good thing to consider is that people use hydrodipping to cover their guns all the time.  If it was too thick there, it would cause jamming of the firearm.  Rednecks like the security of having a gun that is always ready to fire, so if it jammed, we would have heard about it.

Yeah, it should be completely fine. Furthermore you could always mention that you would not like those parts covered, im sure theres a way he can handle that! Ive been meaning to dip mine, just waiting until the HHKB metal case is ready ;)

After using some of these keyboards heavily for over a year I can also difinitively say his finishes are permanent, and have not work off at all in any areas of the cases.

Is the paint very think?

Just wondering ;'cause the case top is effectively the plate, and I don't know how much leeway there is in the slider holes.

Not really, but to get around this I would tape over the top of the sliders when I had the case in half, and use enough hot glue to fill the ends of all the holes from the backside, and after all the dipping and painting was done, knock out the hot glue. It surely wouldn't affect travel distance at all on the top part of the case/plate.

There is a lot of good options :D personally I never get very professional looking finishes with spray cans, so Id even probably send him a case even if i just wanted it professionally painted.

beautiful dips, love the 76 on bamboo!

Do you need to remove (sand) the rubber coating before dipping? Would leaving it on there cause it to be less permanent or more easily damaged?

I would read the reviews for the controllers to check the quality. The one review for the keyboard dipping makes it seem like a solid coating.

There are some pictures in this thread (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=60892.0) of a disassembled Novatouch, if that's any help.

Stripped? how do you mean exactly? I know some have the rubberized kind of case. My QFR didn't but my NT did and it dipped just fine.

I just had to take the case off and send it off  :thumb:

If you want to remove the rubberised coating, most people just sand it off, carefully.

Are there any tricks? Just disassemble and use hydro dip? Or we need to use sandpaper and then one specific cover?
