The AidanBoard: first build - initial design
« on: Thu, 30 March 2017, 17:27:50 »
Here we go!

Below is my initial design for a keyboard custom build. I was generally just being a spaz to see what my ideal keyboard would be.

- Modifiers are all hilarious
- I don't really use the right hand side modifiers (Ctrl + Shift etc) at all. Only on the left hand side do I care about these.
- I really like the idea of a 60% keyboard but I need arrow keys in my life because I have too many hotkeys mapped to them and I'm not convinced a pok3r for example would allow me to retain the same level of functionality and ease. I looked into 65% keyboards but none of them looked sexy enough.
- I figured that I might want F1-12 but I might add them at a later date as a separate dedicated keyboard entirely. I don't ever use them in combination.
- I have zero use for a number pad. I'm typing this on a ducky shine 5 (100% size keyboard) and I don't think I've ever touched that once.
- I do use the following keys:
  - del
  - home
  - end
  - pg up
  - pg down
But I renamed them to stuff like alpha, omega etc because it looks cool.

The basic idea here is to allow me all the functionality that I currently have and preserve my current hot key ability whilst getting rid of everything I don't use and having something small and portable that I can take in my backpack to client sites at work.

Let me know what you think! This is my first build so I'm about to figure out how to do CAD drawings for it. Once I have each step made I'll upload the schematics for other people to use. :)

That layout has for sure been made in the past, unless you really want to have your own board made you can probably find the layout somewhere else for cheaper. Look around for 65% keyboards and then you can use a separate keypad for the f keys.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

Congrats!  I'm about to build my own layout too, but I'm going 60% and not 65%.  What you have looks close to a whitefox.

Here's the pics http://cdn.matt3o.com/uploads/2016/01/whitefox-all-layouts.jpg

I have the same requirements and habits as you, with no right modifiers.  The biggest thing about your layout is finding a case for it, I think.

Here's the layout I'll be building soon.
