IBM two piece keycaps
« on: Thu, 28 August 2008, 12:27:40 »
Hey, I just discovered what you guys meant by that. There is a cover with the markings over the keys. How neat. I can have a blank keyboard by just taking them off. Yes, I know all the keys are the same size underneath, bummer. But look at how easy that makes remapping keys want to swap ~ and Esc just remap and change the keycovers. Want to change Caps Lock to Ctrl just remap and move the Ctrl keycover to the cap loc key (unfortunately the caps lock cover will not fit the control key without a bit of surgery as it is longer). How cool!

Very cool indeed :) Also for cleaning... it's too bad the new Unicomps are one-piece, but people here say the feel is pretty much identical. I would love to get black caps for one of my M's, but I think that if I had to change all the switches it would loose the feel it has to it...

Are you sure about the Unicomp keyboards with the one piece keys?
My customizer has 2 piece keys, they are grey. My spacesaver I ordered with black keys, they are one piece.
I prefer the 2 piece keys. Its probably all in my mind, but I think they add something to the feel.
I suppose the best way to find out, would be to weigh them. If they weigh the same then I would think its me. Does anyone have a scale that is sensitive enough to weigh the difference?

You are right, I remember now you telling me you had 2-pieces on that board. The black ones are the ones I'm referring to as being one piece. I had contacted Unicomp to see if they had a set available to replace the white keycaps on one of my model M's.

My Unicomp has two-piece Ctrl keys, but the rest of them are single piece. Kinda strange. Maybe they just lots of spare Control key parts from IBM but not for the others? I don't know.

For what it's worth, the black Unicomp Endura Pro I use at work has two-piece keycaps, for all the keys.

Once I took them all out and replaced them randomly, just to see if anyone would notice.  No one did, and typing on it gave me a massive headache (even though I'm a touch typist).
