[IC] Dino104 | Finalizing IC
« Reply #1 on: Wed, 04 August 2021, 21:35:37 »
8/5/2021: Added Pantones to IC Post. Ash Grey is a collab with KAT Overgrown. Colormatched to the abandoned grey.
8/25/2021: Some news here. The decision had been made to change Dino to a seamless design. We sent the seamless files to manu halfway through the quoting process. Then they waited til after we ordered protos to re-quote us. Unfortunately Dino price is going to be increased to $600. In other news, moq has been shifted to 180 units.
8/25/2021: Dino108 —> Dino104
9/13/2021: Asia Vendor is now Hex Keyboards
10/23/2021: I got some good news and i got some bad news. Good news is protos have shipped and will arrive to me soon. Bad news is we’re changing manus since the quality of these protos are bad and the price will most definitely go up
1/17/2022: IC Finalized, Prototype build stream will be done by Dededecline and prototype pics will be taken when it arrives

Couple issues I take with this.

CNC aluminum
What alloy of aluminum? And why is this so far down in the post?

Quote
Layout:
Unclear. Most people use color to differentiate separate layout options, but yours looks like some vintage catastrophe.

Quote
Vendors:
Why do you have vendors already when this was just posted as an IC? You don't know if people want this yet, how do you have a vendor signed up to run it? And why only 3 regions?

Why is the weight entirely internal? Seems like a pretty bold design choice. edit: forgot jane v2 ce existed lul, this does the same thing with the weight as that board. alpha centered and internal. interested to see how this sounds

By a "Hard-Case", I assume you mean a carrying case.

I understand this is your first IC, but please look around to see typical formats. At the very least spoiler your images.

interesting choice, forcing the 6.25u.
Not that it matters, I'm just here for the split space.

Adding 7u by the end of the week. So that doesn't need to be forced :)

Overall I am really digging this board! High quality custom full sized keebs are a rarity for sure. The price stings, but is understandable considering the size of billets you'll need for these bad boys. One question though. Why is the weight placed to the left & not centered? Seems like a weird decision that'll make the board feel weighted off center when handling it.

The design doesn’t really resonate with me (and that’s okay! there’s nothing inherently wrong with it per se), though perhaps you could consider changing the numpad bottom 2u stab to be north facing for the sake of consistency.

More just wanted to comment to say these (mostly) aren’t really valid criticisms to be going after the OP for. Or at the very least, be consistent. There are sooo many other ICs from higher profile designers which have these same ‘issues’, but I don’t see people going after them.

2 renders, none with keycaps and no prototype? huh, okay.

Couple issues I take with this.

Yeah. Lack of proto at this point is fine. As long as there's at least one working and functional proto (preferably with many pics and sound test) before the board runs that's really sufficient. You don't really have to have one before you even post an IC.

Def not my aesthetic but I'm always a fan of more big bois in the hobby.

OOOOO 10u

Edit: Will google be okay with a direct pull of the design vs an artistic abstraction changing some aspects to at least make something new? I do like it though I hope that doesn't come across wrong.
