This topic came up today on a serious note.

Anybody have experience or direct knowledge with this? A programmer we know has a Russian "mail order" wife, and a consultant friend married a wonderful Thai girl. Anyone else with a story?

I saw a guy at the mall that definitely had one... or an Escort.

But seriously there was a documentary on TV last year that was pretty good.  I'm sure you can find it.

A large group of us were talking at lunch today and I was the only person that knew of people that had an unconventional meeting of their wives. I'm sure it's not common, but I thought it was odd I was the only person that knew people that had done that. I was wondering if anyone else here did or knew people that did this. Single guy curiosity :)

Can you return them if you are not satisfied? Oh, wait...different thread...maybe.

I've never heard of anyone in the smaller area that I live in. I would think its more prevalent in larger cities.

I have family that knows friends (so it's 3rd hand stories)
They basically get paid to marry.
Now, their family has to know the other family (presumably in china) this way there's the pretense of "arranged marriage"
the citizen(the one who get's paid) then goes and applies for wife/husband visa travels there and "imports" the wife/husband.
The other family buys them a house to live in, and they live in this house but live separate lives for 3 years when the "import" goes get's residency/citizenship or whatever and the citizen get's paid $50,000.

While this doesn't relate directly to mail order brides, it's a certain perspective is all i can offer.

Wow. Depressing. :(
I suppose that people that do it well intentioned may divorce after a few years once citizenship and an easy path has been set up for them...but he 2 people I know are having families (about 4-5 years into it). On a very personal note, one of the two men said it was an "entitlement" issue, he wanted to be with someone that appreciated everything in life, rather than feel "owed" something most of the time. He's a successful yet humble, unassuming guy, so it seems to work out well.

Oh I'm friends with a guy, his friend (idk if it makes a difference) is polish and he got a "mail order" bride. Married right away, and for three years they were happy, hanging out, i even remember a story where she's like ordering boxes of pre-made weight watchers food for him cuz he's just getting too fat. Bought a house and everything, then when the "right time" (i think it's 3 years) came up, she filed for divorce and wanted half. I think she took the cat too. Actually now that i think about it, she wasn't a mail order bride, but rather her "work permit visa" was going to expire and i don't think the company sponsor wanted to renew it, so i guess that's how the marriage happened.

He met another polish girl on a dating website, they both moved to san fran and are happy and getting married this year, this relationship i've actually seen (didn't see the previous one) and they do seem happy i guess. So maybe that's a +1 for dating websites.
