[IC] KAM Aquanaut (Updated 03/15/19)
« on: Mon, 18 February 2019, 08:53:40 »

Hey Guys!  This is an IC for my first pass at a custom set, meant to evoke the feeling of diving in some tropical paradise, DSA Aquanaut!
I've designed a full set of custom legends for this, including both text and icon modifiers and a few novelties.
DSA profile was chosen because I love the versatility of non-sculpted profiles, but I'd definitely be open to considering something else.  (Maybe all SA Row 3?)
Keyreative is going to be be producing the set, so it will be KAM profile!

I've included some faux-renders (and some actual renders!) that I put together, as well as the different kits I'm proposing.

Thanks for taking a look, and I'd love to hear your feedback!

Google Poll:  https://goo.gl/forms/jO3HpMYs5Rpe2nG93

Updates

02/19/19 - Slight tweaks to legends (M, Y, 3, Comma, Semicolon)
02/27/19 - This past week I've been trying to line up some partners to help get this made.  I think I should have a bigger update on that soon.  Added Polarnaut test.
03/15/19 - Tweaked colors after getting physical pantone chips, and added a few renders.  zFrontier and Keyreative will be helping to get this made.

Renders

Kits

Colors

Polarnaut

The reaction I've gotten to the legends has been pretty positive, so I wanted to get some eyes on this and see if there would be any interest in a more basic kit.  All white?

I don't usually like sets with the fading to different colors effect. However this very nice, I'm digging the diving helmet. My only problem is I never liked the all one height profile thing DSA does. Gl with IC

Love it! Where do I sign up? If you put together a google form that collects email you’ll be able to ping people when you enter gb stage.

Personally, I’m a fan of sa row3, but I think novelties significantly delay that process compared to dye sub dsa. But it’s worth asking sp, maybe these are simple enough to get a quick turn around!

People will complain about the lack of colevrak kit, but with the ombré style alphas it’s probably not worth it. Fwiw, this comment is coming from a Dvorak user.

My last comment is that the ortho kit could use a pair of 1.5u blanks to greatly increase compatibility, and if you’re feeling generous a pair of 1.25u blanks helps as well. Generally I do these in mod and alpha colors, but if you had to pick just one, mod colors seem to be the standard.

I think you’ve done a great job setting up this kit! Looking forward to the gb!

Thanks for the feedback!  The google form is a great idea, I'll get that put together as soon as possible!

I figured dye-sub DSA would be the cheapest with the quickest turnaround, but I do love SA row 3...

And I'd definitely be down to add other kits if there's interest!

Digging the color choices here. Feel like it could use an anchor for a novelty key (or an extra "anchor arrows" kit)

Also interested, here's hoping for a reasonable price ;)

By the way, your Google form is not accessible outside your G Suite org, you need to set it to public.

A 1u Tab and 1.25 Ctrl in the Alternates kit would make this an instabuy for me.  That would fit a few of my 40's layouts easily.

Thanks for the feedback!  I've adjusted the 3, Y, and M legends a bit.  The tilted M is a pretty distinctive feature of the typeset that served as my inspiration, so I wanted to preserve that.  The legends for the alphas are loosely based on a font used for 60s NASA charts/papers/etc and printed on some hardware.  Specifically, I looked at the Apollo Guidance Computer's DSKY.  I think Futura Demi Bold is a good comp for this typeface, but it's a little too crisp and I wanted to recreate the feel of printed letters. So what I've created is a kind of "softened" Futura Demi Bold... if that makes sense.

A 1u Tab and 1.25 Ctrl in the Alternates kit would make this an instabuy for me.  That would fit a few of my 40's layouts easily.

That sounds reasonable enough!

I dig the alphas but I think the black legends on dark navy mods lacks sufficient contrast. I would suggest doing mod legends in the same color as one of the alpha gradients.

I’d also prefer any other profile to DSA but that’s just me.

I'd also prefer SA S3 but I'm hoping this guy does another run of a different colorway bc I love the design but not 100% into the color since I prefer pastels.

This color scheme and legends look really good.

Have you considered MT3 PBT for this? This reduces compability somewhat compared to DSA, but it's a fantastic profile.

Not a bad suggestion!  I do like the diver as the single point of orange, to kind of give it that feeling of being such a tiny thing in the massive open ocean, but I will definitely consider adding an orange enter as well.

It's a cool profile, for sure, but I'd really like to stick to something non-sculpted.  DSA, SA Row3, or maybe XDA if I could make that happen.

I fully respect the reasoning behind that. I would be mostly interested in PBT keycaps, and I'm guessing doubleshot ABS will be way to expensive anyway with all the custom colors and legends.

Hey guys, I wanted to give a quick update on this.

I'm currently talking to partners to help get this made, and definitely making progress.
I'll have a bigger update on that soon.

I also added a quick experiment with a more basic mono-white kit that I actually think looks pretty nice.  I would love to hear any thoughts on that!

I'm hoping to get some time this week to try out a few more novelty key designs.  Thanks for all of the feedback and interest so far!

So far the reaction to Polarnaut has been really good, so that could definitely maybe be a thing!  Right now I'm about 75% sure this is going to be DSA, probably to keep the price point and turnaround time reasonable, but I still haven't ruled out SA row 3.  I need to talk to some people to see what makes the most sense.

Monolegends look awesome IMO. And expecially for international users like me, since then I don't have to worry about having the wrong legends on the number keys.

Holy **** yes 1000% yes on Polarnaut. If you make it SA R3 I'll get 3 sets. Grey on white is the exact colorway I was going to try and design myself and you've done all the work for me 😂

edit: ALSO but please keep the fish related adorable novelties because I love the fish thanks

I would be much more interested in PBT than ABS, and AFAIK SP doesn't make R3 PBT sets. I might be wrong though..

This is dope. I love it. :D

+1 for monolegends
+1 for thick Keyreative KAM

Polarnaut is just okay for me. It's a super clean idea, but it doesn't click as well as the wonderfully executed Aquanaut and theme to me.

And would you be open to adding two 1.5u Alt keys to the Alternate kits for Tsangan/WKL comparability?

I'm aiming for maximum compatibility, so that's definitely a possibility.  There's been a lot of interest in the alternates kits, so lots of people need these non-standard keys!  :))

I do love the color ways! But I feel like it will look better if the keycaps has a smooth surface instead of a matte one. So do you consider KAT or KAM profile?

I agree with Brian and Jae from Top Clack about having the F Row keys all light blue to represent the light at the top of the water. I don't particularly like color blocking F5 through F8 on non-gradient keysets anyway.

Digging the color choices here. Feel like it could use an anchor for a novelty key (or an extra "anchor arrows" kit)

Anchor arrows sound pretty fun!  I'll consider that!

Anchors don’t denote movement!

The clear choice for novelty arrows is harpoons

Filled out your form!

Another update here.  I've been really busy with other stuff lately, but I have talked with zFrontier and Keyreative and they've agreed to produce the set.  So that means KAM profile instead of DSA.  I'll be sending out color chips soon, so they can start matching and getting samples back to me.

I got a load of plastic chips from Pantone to try and get the colors as close to the original vision as possible and after a lot of trial and error, finally nailed down a set that I think works.  All of the images have been updated with the new colors, and I also did a few renders and added them to the original post.  (I also added a photo of the chips so you can get and idea of what the colors look like in the real world.)

I think I should have a more solid grasp on dates and prices and everything soon, so hopefully another update shortly.

I probably should have been more clear - I was looking for support for WKL R4, so really, I'm after two 1.5u CTRL and two 1.5u ALT.  Would also be necessary for a 1.5/1/1.5/7/1.5/1/1.5 R4 layout.

Repeated delays and total lack of communication (see e.g. Kira80 thread for "how not to do group buys 101").
As for Colemak, KAM isn't a sculpted profile.

It looks very cute! Love those fish novelties 🐟

Amazing colorway for sure.

I figured it'd be worth pointing out that KAM is very shiny. Here are some pics of the KAM Wraith samples, courtesy of Biip, as well as pics of KAM Starry Night (the first KAM set to be run, currently shipping) by zFrontier:

Some people may like this and some may not. I personally think the shine is quite interesting and could work in a set's favor. However, I'm not sure if it's a match for the Aquanaut colorway.

Thanks for pointing that out. I have to admit that the shine is a pretty big turn-off for me.

Have you seen the samples of KAM Wraith? Are you aware they shine like ABS that’s been typed on for ten years? Just checking....

Assuming this project is still going, shiny keys would be a big dealbreaker for me.

I think it's an interesting feature as well. It might work in favor of this set indeed. Now things like KAM Dasher or KAM Honeywell become quite interesting too as they really profit from smooth / shiny surfaces.

I’m wondering why keyreaxrive did this. I mean I could see making shiny an option but not a feature. People in this community associate shine with abc wear and tear. Often preferring not because it doesn’t shine. So why make a mold that can only make keys that look like 3 year used abs keys?

Also not bothered about the shine either. I actually like the look and feel of the smooth surface on SA Vilebloom, that has shined up within a couple of months :)

Just make thia happen! Oh, then again I remembered it is supposed to be run by zFrontier, and that is a big turn off.

Any update on this? Love the colors and would love a Colevrak option (so colors aren't interspersed). I think biip got some intel on a non-shiny version of KAM for the Wraith IC, btw.

I would also prefer non-shiny keys. To me, a shiny plastic looks cheaper than a mat one. That's totally subjective, I know.

I'm also wondering how shiny keys would look in a well lit office. Might be disturbing, might not 🤔

I'd also be in! Love the gradient. If the shiny finish is the problem (not for me, I'd actually like one shiny set) it doesn't need to be - KAM Wraith will have new matte moulds made. Starts in 10 days.

The design seemed to be suspended but thank you for bringing this up. I am writing to the designer to follow up on the design - both parties definitely lost track of the project - and hopefully my email could bring this back again.

I'd also like to see if this is happening. I love this design and it'd be a shame if it wasn't brought to production.

As a side note, seeing all the people complaining about KAM and being shiny, I don't believe this is universally the case. I have a KAT set and it isn't shiny in the slightest. I'm guessing it depends on what material they use and how its produced, but I'm pretty sure shininess would be a non-issue if its not what the designer wants.

My understanding is that surface finish is more a product of the mold than the material and that KAM is just inherently shiny whereas KAT is not, but I could be wrong. I would very much prefer a matte finish to shiny. I'm still interested in this set, but my hopes aren't high; it definitely seems dead.

That's it exactly. They both use the same material, the difference is KAM molds used to be shiny by default. Biip with KAM Wraith made them build new matte molds for KAM so i suppose that now there's the option for both.
That said I'd prefer that set in shiny finish, it will complement the colours quite well.

I like it, but my only question is... why no 1.75 shift support? Most people are getting into 65s rn and that's the fundamental keycap to make that happen.

I hate to break it to you, but this project has been dead for over a year. The designer has been MIA since September '19, and it doesn't seem like reaching out to zfrontier got anywhere, either.

It feels good. I line it way better than sculptured keycaps. But as everything in GH it's personnel preference. So my advice is to get yourself a cheap set from Amazon and test it and send it back to them, if yo want.
