What are your other expensive non-keyboard hobbies?
« on: Mon, 21 May 2018, 17:57:49 »
Not counting ones I had as a kid,

Bicycles - I have a road bike (same one since 2005 though), single suspension mountain bike, and fixed gear. I'm not as interested in this lately, but mountain biking has been a fun new aspect to cycling in the last few years.
Firearms - I haven't bought anything in a few years. I got tired of politics causing price swings and scarcity.
PC hardware - I think I'm fairly restrained in this now. I built my PC in 2013 and haven't upgraded anything since except for the case; well, and I added more RAM. I'm waiting to get a new graphics card since my current one died. I'm living off a friend's old donated GPU now. I'm waiting until the 1180 is released to buy a new one.
Knives - Not really into this much, but I have more folding pocket knives than the average person. Same with flashlights.
Paintball - I've tried getting back into this in the last few years, but it seems to have really died off in the last 15 years or so. I also usually feel disappointed after playing because of equipment malfunctions and such. Idk if I'll stick with it.
Cameras - I always dreamt of getting a really awesome DSLR, but I never did.
Weightlifting equipment - The garb isn't super expensive, but I'm planning on putting a power rack in my garage soon, which will probably be at least $1500, since I've decided I hate going to the gym since there are other people there (and because the equipment is crap).

That's all I can think of at the moment

Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The world has become a weird place.

Prop replicas. (definition).
Could be as expensive as you like. I would say that I spend more time than money though.
I used to do Star Wars cosplaying, which is how got I started with prop replicas.

If we are talking all of that being alcoholic beverages, that amount is known to be harmful for your health even if you don't get hammered every time. I would suggest cutting down.

Yeah, I was estimating each drink to cost at most $10, which is what is common over here and is considered expensive in an international comparison.

I don't really indulge much in my expensive hobbies because... well... money. But here goes:

  • Computers. Easily the most money sucking hobby of mine. Every year I get about 350 to 385 back in Property Tax Credit, and it usually goes to either my computer or my mom's. This year it got her an i3 8100, 8GB of DDR4 2666 RAM, an Asrock B360 Pro 4 motherboard and two 140mm case fans to replace the one that basically exploded on her and the one that's going out. On the first it will be rounded off with a new case, which will have those two fans transferred to the top exhaust.
  • Keyboards. To be fair, I spend a heck of a lot more on keyboards for a certain smoker in my household (who honestly asks for them whether she needs a replacement or not--she's far more of an enthusiast than me lol) than I do myself. But that is still two RK-9000's, a Unicomp Ultra Classic and an Adesso Tenkeyless with blue switches by itself, not to mention the keyboards I still use and the one that was murdered by a stray cola.
  • Fossil shark teeth. That is all.
T1000 , Firmware ver. Doge.

Most deadly of them all.
Keyboards: Drevo Gramr (Outemu Browns); Logitech K480

Other than keyboards, I have a collection of
  • pointing devices (trackballs, a few mice, a couple of trackpads and rollermice),
  • mostly vintage headphones (this actually isn't all that expensive either, if you don't blow money on amps, can find cans like Sennheiser HD 540 Reference for $50 and be happy with them),
  • obscure portable computers with mostly open Linux systems (this is also cheap, considering that I still use a 10yo Nokia N800, but stuff like OpenMoko back in the day, then OpenPandora or now Pyra can get expensive—like custom keyboards from very limited group buys),
I've mostly given up on photography and can't even make myself build a newer PC (my current computer is a top of the line refurbished thinkpad that I got by accident, I was looking for something much less powerful and cheaper originally).

I could dump piles of cash into sports, but avoid it too.
  • Alpine skiing. I'm very good at it, but don't work out hard enough to get full enjoyment out of it.  If I did, upgrading my current cheap-ish gear would get very expensive, and a day of skiing is both expensive and comes with a large overhead (such as traveling).
  • Biking. I got a decent MTB for daily commute, but gave up on maintenance. Not worth it compared to walking + public transport (where I can read).
  • Archery. Tried it as a kid, it fascinates me, but decent gear is expensive. Generally, it's recommended to join a club and rent a starter bow based on their recommendation… I can't get myself to join a club in the first place, though.
So, I'm cheap, but I might eventually go back to school, though, which is an expensive lifestyle choice in a way.

I like recording, producing, and mixing my own music. Music equipment and software can get expensive, and gear/plugin acquisition is similarly addicting and it's really easy to accidentally go on a binge.

I also have 2 kids but they are little so don't have hobbies yet. Going to try to save money by making them like what I like. If that fails, I guess I'll support whatever they want to do. I didn't get to have a lot of hobbies growing up because we were poor, so I'd like to live vicariously through them.

I also play chess, but that's cheap af after you buy a decent set and a chess clock.

I also love boxing... I guess PayPerViews can get expensive, but they don't happen too often. If I wanted to get back into the workout side of it, the equipment would be a one-time money dump but then it's also cheap af.

Besides children, most of my other hobbies didn't really begin until after college--when I got my first job and excess cash!

As a kid, I enjoyed reading and playing video games. I still enjoy both, but nowadays I borrow books from the library and go after retro games (pre-PS2/GCN/Xbox).
After college, my hobbies in chronological order were:
fountain pens,
playing cards,
tabletop games,
toys (mostly Japanese action figures), and finally
mechanical keyboards.

The three I still continuously enjoy are reading, video games, and keyboard paraphernalia. I still like fountain pens, but do not use them enough to justify frequent purchases. I love me my European-style board games as well, but my friends with whom I used to play have all moved away so I don't play them much anymore.

Addendum:
I guess I also enjoy lifting weights more, especially as of this year. In high school I was active in sports throughout all three seasons, and since then have kept exercise in my life in some mode or another.

Post addendum:
Whoops; exercise isn't really "expensive" for me as I get a membership at my office building's gym.

Best? or best value? Gotta give me a price range. I do like the 2 zebralights that i own though if you wanted best value with a 18650 battery I would have to go with my Emisar D4 https://intl-outdoor.com/emisar-d4-high-power-led-flashlight-p-921.html  I actually run it with the 18350 tube.

Hrrmm.. Ok ya'll know how an aluminum case keyboard is $300, but in utility / performance, it's the same as $20 mechanical keyboards from pluggable..

So... I don't want $300 aluminum case... I want the performance without the fuss..

The utility feature side:

Optimizing Lumens / Dollar
Must have side button..
uses 1x 18650..
Generally reliable.

If you buy less food your will have more money for weed, but if you buy more weed you will wish you had more money for food.

These are all more expensive than keyboards.

Cars: Built a single turbo mkiv supra in college, ran 10s consistently at the track. Was into the modded car scene for about 5 years there. Recently not so much, but I still spend too much on cars and do car related things from time to time.

Car models: I have like 100 1:18 diecast cars displayed in lit glass cases. So yeah.

Japanese kitchen cutlery: Starting in about 2007 I started getting into the hand forged, custom order, traditional Japanese kitchen knife community (yanagiba, deba, gyuto, and a million other styles) and at one point had over 50 of those. Reduced that to around 20 now.

Musical Instruments: As a woodwind player I've owned everything from variously sized saxophones to contrabass clarinets, flutes, baroque and renaissance recorders, and fancy clay ocarinas. Bought a semi fancy synthesizer at one point. Played throughout college in various groups and even afterward, but currently my work schedule doesn't really allow for it.

I think the conventional accepted age is actually 33. In some book of the bible one of the apostles mentioned jesus was 30, then approximately 2-3 years passed from that point to when he was crucified.

Only reason I know is that a friend had this poster and his dad would always say, "Jesus should be on there too ya know."
Show Image

I think the conventional accepted age is actually 33. In some book of the bible one of the apostles mentioned jesus was 30, then approximately 2-3 years passed from that point to when he was crucified.

^

Children.
Jesus Christ, but you're really young, aren't you? Oo

Next year I'll be the same age Jesus was when he was crucified.  :'(
Oh, I seem to remember a picture of you where you looked about 20 xD .

Oh, I think I uploaded an old photo where I actually was 20 in that pic!

Guns
Motorcycles
PC stuff

Used to have ~30 guns or so, but sold most of em after the new bull**** CA "assault rifle" laws. Really regret getting rid of the Scar 17 though.

My spending on the above hobbies has pretty much stopped besides maintenance, although I'm prolly gonna be getting a faster bike next year. Ninja 300 is a bit too slow lol, awesome just for commuting though.

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. I like fashion. I buy nearly everything in TK Maxx or in sales though. Hunting for a bargain is half the fun of it.

Aside from that I live relatively frugally, bar the nights out where I go a bit mad buying drinks. Been trying to cut back on the alcohol intake lately not great for the health or frame of mind in the long run but felt good to blow off some steam after a couple of very stressful years.

My hobbies seem to fluctuate a lot.  It drives my wife nuts, so generally it's whatever I'm into at the time.  Ones that have stuck around (for the time being at least):

Boardgames.  Love them, have a decent sized collection that I've spent probably way too much time and money on including kitting them out with custom pieces, boxes, inserts (Kingdom Death especially) and recently started getting back into painting minis and acquired airbrushing supplies and decent paints.

DJing.  Started back in college in Atlanta when I found an old direct drive turntable in an apartment.  Used to play a lot when I had a dedicated setup, but with kids and wife's office now out of the house, the turntables are relegated to a bookshelf most of the time.  I have Traktor which I use for digital sets with the TTs and a midi controller.  Been interested in getting a Traktor controller instead to play around with, but when do I have the time these days (plus wife would probably kill me if I started bring more expensive electronics into the house).

Books.  Stephen King in particular, but other favorite authors as well like Tad Williams, Patrick Rothfuss, etc.  I like to collect hardback first editions.  Have a whole set of Dark Tower Grant published 1st's, some signed by King and most of them signed by their respective artists.  My prized one is The Waste Lands, where Ned Dameron did a remarque in the book (fancy word for sketch) of Jake and Oy, which was then captioned and signed by King at a meet and greet.

Wet Shaving.  This one has definitely calmed down in the acquisition area over the past couple years as I've settled down with the few razors/soaps/after shaves that I really like and focused on using them till I need to order more.  But when I started I just had to try every razor and ever brush and every soap/AS I could get my hands on.  Have since sold off most of it.  I also have matched set of 3 EverReady brushes that I restored by hand from old handles that I found at antique stores/ebay with knots from The Golden Nib and Shavemac.  Currently I rotate between my Gillette New Style Long Comb double edge, and a F.W. Engles Leader straight razor.

Video Games.  Currently own PS4, PS3, PSVita, Switch, WiiU, two 3DS's, SNES, and too many games to play with what little time I have.  At least my PC is so old that I don't bother wasting any money on the Steam sales.

True. I guess the expensive version goes by another name entirely. Patrons, at least here in the US, do tend to refer to themselves as "hobbyists" though.

How do I know this? Well, that shall remain unanswered except perhaps to paraphrase Winston Churchill; in relation to those who place a high value on their own "purity"- they have all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.

Drinking is pretty expensive if you have any sort of pallet at all. What really sucks about drinking as a hobby is you are literally pissing your money away.

Still, you'll get no argument from me that a $100 12 year single malt is infinitely better than a bottle of Cutty Sark no matter how much money you save on the latter.

Currently Travel and Warhammer 40K. Travel I'm always saving up for but WH I have now started dipping into my kb budget and prioroitising armies vs customs.

It's a bit of a lose lose battle really as they are both require you to go deep into funds, whereas travel I can justify to myself and others, spending 3-4 times as much on something that will last a very limited time

Yeah, a noticeable amount of my money also goes there. Although I only drink the stuff that's spelt without an "e".

Also starting to take a liking to cognac though. It's a bit easier-going than my usual Islays but still nice from time to time.

Photography.  Though I have most of the lenses and accessories I want nowadays, so not really any spending recently (except a Laowa 60mm 2:1 macro lens--good stuff).  Same camera body for a long time now though, so looking into upgrading eventually.

Fountain pen stuffs: too many inks, a whole lot of pens, more paper/journals than I reasonably need.  Thankfully that too has tapered off, and I'm working on selling off things I don't use.

I suppose it's not really hobby, but pets.  Emergency vets can be stupid expensive. $2000 or so last fall for one such incident, $600 just a month ago. I almost started selling various gear to recoup the losses.

Photography is the major thing that's sucking my budget over the keebs, I'm basically just buying vintage/new manual lenses and playing with them cause they're so much more fun than af lenses.

I'm eyeing a new 35mm f1.2 for my fuji... Getting my fuji has opened so many doors for adapted glass that it's a bit of a hazards since there are a lot of cheap russian lenses on ebay.

<-- Fuji user for years.  There's no 35mm f/1.2--I assume you mean 35mm f/1.4?  Or do you mean a vintage lens of some sort?  If the former, great lens.  If you like manual glass, I highly recommend Mitakon Speedmaster 35mm f/0.95--wonderful lens, super sharp in the center even wide open.  First I thought I'd just keep both, as they are different, but lately I think I'm just going to let my 35mm f/1.4 go and only keep the 35mm f/0.95.  Focusing with the Mitakon is super easy too if you have X-T1 or X-T2 (or X-H1) with split screen EVF mode in manual focus.

Agh. I should have specified, Rokinon 35m f1.2. It's slightly cheaper than the mikaton, but that fast aperture is kind of tempting... I'm slowly getting some more manual glass. But I first have to learn how to use my rokinon 21mm f1.4 for astro. I set focus to infinity this week to shoot the milkyway, but it was still a bit fuzzy. I gotta go back out to try again but bugs don't really make it easy to just sit and mess with your camera.

I've never really used split screen, but I'm more partial to focus peaking. It's pretty OP sometimes lol

I recommend the Mitakon (Mark II) over the Rokinon.  Something about the effective "rendering" of the Rokinon bugs me from the samples I've seen.  The Mitakon lens is very solid though: small, dense, beautiful color, lots of character and apparent volume to the subjects (vs that flat over-corrected look).  You can find good used copies for around $400-450 time to time.

The little turds live in a more expensive environment than I do.

Every time I start a new hobby to degrade the amount of money wasted for the previous one, it turns out even more expensive...

Currently, listening to music (vinyl only) and finding the perfect whisky.

I finished building my garage gym a week ago (I acquired and assembled the equipment over about three months), so constructing that and now using it has been taking a bit of my time. I could have done this for fairly cheap, but the materials for the platform were more expensive than the guide I followed stated. I also decided to go with bumper plates instead of iron, which would have saved me a few hundred dollars. All in all, it was about $2k for the whole setup, but the bumpers were almost 1/3 of that.

For the past two months or so, I've been going to a Karate class, but that's not expensive since the Sensei is doing it for free (just $5 for the gym's mat fee).

I've been reading too, which is only expensive because I'm doing it through onlinegreatbooks.com and basically pay for monthly Socratic seminars. Not sure it's worth the cost yet, but I wouldn't be reading these books otherwise, especially at the given pace.
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The world has become a weird place.

I could imagine as a travel agent you know when to jump on a vacation offer. :))
I haven't been to that many countries but again traveling has never really been my thing. I'd love to re-visit America though.

Truth?
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Sometimes I feel like I have too many.  :-[

Motorcycles - I’m a supersport lover. Insurance is a *****
Vinyl - I was addicted after I fixed up my late grandfathers old Pioneer
Instruments - Percussion mostly, along with bass and guitar. I dream of a nice Skervesen 7 string
Firearms & Ammo - Mainly rifles. I built an AR15 last year, wanting to get a nice AR10 next year
PC Hardware - Built a new PC as a graduation gift to myself a couple months ago
Video Games - Though I spend a lot less of my money and time on games now

A part of me wants more hobbies while the rest of me weeps thinking about how much it will cost

Totally agree with you there.

Guitars & Keyboards & Equipment to go with them: I've pretty much slowed down now, but I'm always on the lookout.
Video and Computer Games: Even given steam sales and humble bundles, I have a backlog that years deep, and have spent way more money that I should have.
EDC: If I'd known when I started how expensive this would get, I'd have just stuck with my keys on a split ring and my simple wallet.
RPGs: I have enough for a store (mostly from when I used to work in one), and still back a lot of Kickstarters for more.
Boardgames: See above.
Computers: I have way more computers than I really need, and still buy more.
Dice, Coins, Tokens, and accessories for rpg/boardgames: Didn't think dice were expensive?  They can be.  Very expensive.  Waiting for a set of wenge dice inlaid with mother of pearl right now.
Bags: I can never find the perfect one to take to work.

I've let go of my extensive DVD collection finally.  But now I'm just getting digital.  Not expensive singly, but en masse, it's not pretty.
I also finally got rid of my miniature collection- Warhammer 40k and Warmachine.

I saw this minimalism documentary lately..

The gist is, the advertising system sells us 1-avenue of happiness.l

And it more/less IS Happiness..

But there ARE other methods..

So, it's less so straight Anti-Consumerism,  and more an enlightenment of the fact that we Have Options for filling the void in our lives..

Of course the first thing this documentary did was cause Tp4 stress..

And so for the past week Tp4 has been planning out a Threadripper 2 build..

I've always wanted to get into boardgames and tabletop games but I never had any friends that were interested.

I had this problem too. I wanted a bag to take everywhere. School, work, gym, travel, etc. I got a Goruck GR1 21L and I absolutely love it. PRICEY for a backpack, but the student/mil/LE/government employee discount they offer is pretty forgiving. That said, the thing is built like a tank and comes with a warranty that covers everything short of setting the damn thing on fire. I like it so much that I'm going to also get a GR2 at some point.

I am in a similar position. I have at least 1K CDs of sophisticated collector-grade jazz and rock (mostly 1960s-1970s) that I would gladly let go of for ~$1 each but I am not inclined to publish a list and sell them piecemeal.
Cognitive distortions are patterns of thought, typically automatic and unconscious, that cause an inaccurate, negative view of situations, people, and/or events. These include things like jumping to conclusions; black-and-white thinking; negative mental filtering; overgeneralizing; mindreading (incorrectly believing we know what others are thinking, what their motives are); and emotional reasoning (believing that if we are feeling something, or if what we are thinking is associated with a strong emotion, it must be true).

Yeah... I was using MakeMKV to transfer to my NAS.  But I was also moving and when I say a massive collection... I mean a massive collection.  I, unfortunately, had to make sacrifices.

As far as bags, right now I'm carrying either a Knomo Durham or an LM Products Commuter Bag or a Timbuk2 Commute, depending on the day and how I have to look.  I also have a few slings- I like the Aer Day Sling a lot, so carry that when I don't need my laptop or my Surface. Those GoRucks are nice- I just don't do backpacks well for daily use, though I do have an Eagle Creek Gear Hauler for single bag airline travel (the only way to fly- especially overseas).

I used to have a few friends, and would play a lot at work and we'd have game jams to get together and just play boardgames.  Sadly, I moved- so I didn't see the need to keep them all.  That reasoning doesn't extend to RPGs though.

That's pretty major!  My dad had a *lot* of collector grade CDs and LPs when he passed (blues/jazz/musicals).  Unfortunately, I was in a different state, and my sister wasn't inclined to save them, so they got tossed.  He also had a typewriter fixation (I guess that's where I get my keyboard fixation from), and they all went bye-bye too.

I get that. I got a 6TB drive for file storage, mostly media. With the film and music I'm already close to 3TB deep. But those are amateur numbers, I'm sure. The day will come when I regret not getting the 8TB model.  :))

I have Tens of thousands of CD's. I do not rip them. I feel Redbook sounds best on super high end spinner into super highend dac. Goldmund>MSB Select. If I like new music I just try to buy Flac. Music does not get "old" so I can spin what I have the rest of my life. I am telling everyone music servers getting lazier and lazier. The sound of a spinner is far superior.

I suspect that LPs will prove far more durable than CDs in the long term.

Same argument can be made about good food/fine dining - literally flushing money down the ****ter.

The older I get the more I realize some of my most cherished and memorable moments were of eating excellent meals. I think the confluence of senses all at once solidify the memory of eating a good meal more than other experiences. Food is one of those definites in life, after all what is the point of human existence if not to bide time between meals? Sleeping and eating are the only two things a human needs to sustain itself, and eating is the only one of those you do while conscious.

Live to eat or eat to live.

you are americans, so the former for you!
