Keycap Profile Usage Types
« on: Thu, 07 June 2018, 10:38:24 »
Are different key cap profiles better at doing specific tasks? For example, is there a profile that better suits gaming and a profile that is better suited for typing?

not an expert by any means, but for me SA is the most comfortable for casual typing, and it looks the best imo. For gaming or typing a lot (like papers, long emails, ect), Cherry profile would be my top pick. If you like the way a laptop keyboard feels, or are transitioning from one, I'd go with DSA. It is comfortable, but the uniform profile is not as nice as stepped.

I wish I could enjoy typing on SA.  SA keycaps look and sound amazing but for typing?  They're kind of awful...

SA makes for great showpieces but for practical everyday use Cherry profile is the way to go.

So I've heard this a lot, but I still don't understand why so many people say it's terrible to type on. Is it just because of the wobble? Is the sculpt too aggressive? I'm genuinely curious.

I think it's all for feel. I don't find SA conducive to typing but that's just me. If I'm really looking to get work done I use Cherry.

I don't think there are any good or bad profiles for certain things - just up to personal preference and how you type. I'd say just go to a meetup in your area and try them out.

Being used to row height differences, I could NOT game on my first DSA set. My fingers kept getting lost. Perhaps thats just because I'm dumb or bad or both (lol), but even just that subtle change in key profile from row to row seemed to make a difference to me. SA looks really nice to me, but it felt like wobble city.

I suspect it's because SA is tall and those people rest their hands on the desk while typing, and so they have to extend their wrists even more than usual.

I feel the same, I love the look of DSA and SA BUT strictly typing then OEM and Cherry are much better.

I think it's the typing angle + cylindrical is just much easier to find your keys.  When I type on Sculpted SA it just feels like I'm keep hitting edges when trying to switch between letters, also I think cylindrical just feels nicer than spherical top.
