【IC】EM-01 80% Mecha-Themed Keyboard (by Zero G)
« on: Thu, 12 December 2024, 09:21:24 »
I'm incredibly excited to introduce to you Zero G's second creation, the "EM-01". After 9 months of development, we have finally reached the stage of prototype production. Allow me to introduce to you this mecha-style design.

In the heart of every mecha enthusiast, there's an unquenchable fire for these steel behemoths. Today, we're proud to debut a creation that brings this passion to life—the EM-01.

The EM-01 is born from a deep appreciation for mecha culture and an unwavering commitment to detail. From "Transformers," "Gundam," "Neon Genesis Evangelion," to "Iron Man," these animations and films that have been a part of our lives have fueled our fanatical dedication to mecha themes. In the world of customized keyboards, we've found the perfect canvas to turn this zeal into reality.

We're not about superficial design. The EM-01's design goes all in, incorporating mecha elements into every single detail without regard for cost. Drawing inspiration from the robust lines and powerful presence of Gundam's mobile suits, we've infused the essence of these iconic machines into every nook and cranny of the keyboard.

The EM-01 is more than just a keyboard; it's a plaything. We highlight its playful nature, pursue an aesthetic that captures the theme, and ensure there's room for future customization. We've strived to make the mecha style of the EM-01 more three-dimensional, with every detail meticulously crafted to perfection, even if it means a higher price tag.

In terms of structure and tactile feedback, the EM-01 features a sturdy, solid feel, ensuring each keypress delivers a direct and crisp response, perfectly in line with the mecha theme.

The EM-01 mecha-themed keyboard is a testament to our unwavering love for mecha culture and our passion for customized keyboards. We believe the investment in detail is worthwhile because it's not just about the product; it's about the experience, the emotional connection it forges.

Let's dive into the mecha magic that the EM-01 brings. Let every keystroke be a bridge to a conversation with the world of mecha.

Timeline and Roadmap:
Timeline:
The product is currently in the stage of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) sample manufacturing, and we expect to receive the unpainted prototypes by early next month.
Following the completion of testing, we will proceed with the production of samples in designated color schemes in mid-February.
Roadmap:
For this release, we plan to sell the product through a group-buy model.
There will be 3 to 4 specific color options available.
Optional decorative accessories will be available.
DLC:Sets for the replacement of external armor, as well as designs for weapon packs.

Model:
Serial Number: EM-01
"Experimental" indicates that it's a prototype designed for testing and development stages.
"Mech" is short for "Mechanical," and is commonly used to refer to mechs or robotic warriors.
Thus, "Experimental Mech" is the designated name for this keyboard model.
As this is the first iteration, it is labeled as the Alpha version, hence the number 01.

Exterior Design:
To capture the layered look of a mecha, we've employed an exoskeleton-like accessory structure. This design not only gives a more three-dimensional feel but also offers greater freedom in terms of color and material customization.
Naturally, the detachable armor design does increase the overall cost of the kit, but it also opens up a wider range of possibilities for future customization.
Judging from the prototypes made from resin castings, it has indeed achieved the desired effect we were aiming for.
Additionally, we are considering the launch of an DLC (Downloadable Content) Armor Upgrade Kit. By replacing the existing accessories, it will transform the entire kit into a different form, much like the weapon packs in Gundam model kits.

Expansion:
With the premise that the entire armor is detachable, we've endowed the EM-01 with a wider array of color combinations and the playability of accessory expansion.
This brings a keyboard closer to the definition of a toy.
You can simply swap out a few parts to create a keyboard with a completely different style.

Overview:

PCB Thickness: 1.2mm
USB Interface: Type-C
Keyboard Slope: 7°
Front Height: 20.8mm

Would be nice to have two keys where the backspace key is at.
There is no greater knowledge than the knowledge of one's self. There is no greater truth than the truth of moral conviction. And there is no greater keyboard than the one beneath my fingertips.

We will consider whether to add an option of soldering pcb, so that more key positions can be matched.

This is a really cool design! But like Blondie has already suggested, the addition of split backspace support would be a really good addition in my opinion. GLWIC!

I don't quite understand the split backspace. If possible, can you give me a schematic picture so that I can ensure that I understand it correctly?

For sure! Just an alternative to the normal backspace where you gain an extra key where the backspace normally is, and the backspace is in a slightly different spot. I personally really like this layout.

Okay, based on the images you've provided, I believe my understanding is correct. I think this kind of split is more suitable for implementation on a solder PCB. I will consider adding an option for additional solder PCBs in the future.
