Wow.

This surprises you?

The US government is owned by billionaires and large corporations who have convinced millions of citizens to avoid voting. And because of years-old "traditions" of procedures in the operation of the Senate, a couple of dozen senators can easily hold the country hostage for almost any purpose.

Social programs which actually help people have been slashed drastically and repeatedly since the Reagan years, and companies like auto makers, BP/Exxon/etc, and even Google(!) get billions of dollars in cash as government handouts each year.

http://mic.com/articles/85101/10-corporations-receiving-massive-public-subsidies-from-taxpayers

It does because similar things happen in the UK, just not on such a large scale, obviously because we are smaller and have less businesses based here. We hand out almost a hundred billion pounds a year in corporate bursaries of one form or another, but our voting system is not influenced by corporations in the same way yours is.

The thing that surprises me the most is the fact that there is just such a flagrant disregard for the consumer. We have independent bodies that monitor monopolies, and there are processes in place to stop corporate buyouts to prevent a lack of competition. The fact that you have absolutely no choice in what ISP you use, I think is just mind boggling.
But everybody happily pays their Internet bills, so what's the motivation for them to change?

In the US, I believe the best hope for change is actually Google, because they have an interest in bringing true broadband to the masses. That will close the gap between web-based and native applications. Every city where Google Fiber sets up shop, soon after sees the entrenched providers in the area start offering competitive speeds and pricing.

This is awesome for consumers because eventually it will reach a saturation point where Google won't have to keep expanding Google Fiber because the other ISPs will have already bit the bullet to bring actual broadband to the majority of the country.

Nah, the best hope is a continued push for regional ISPs.  They've been showing that they can kick ass at a better price point than the regional monopoly providers.  Of course, ISPs are trying to make that illegal in many states, so...

Used the wrong term, sorry.  I meant local municipal broadband.  Ars Technica has done articles on why ISPs are trying to kill it and has done a few stories on it recently.

Trains.
The human race has operated trains for over 100 ****ing years. Yet National Rail seem totally ****ing surprised and incompetent as **** to anything that may happen. I've been sat on this train for 30mins (the length of the journey) and it hasn't moved yet because they couldn't find a driver. On top of that the station that I'm suppose to stop at has had signal problems, so it might be canceled at any time, even while I'm on it.

For this amazing service it costs me more than the fuel it would cost to drive there.

The train ended up being an hour late, a full hour late. So I was a full hour late to work.

Everything related to the British trains is wonderful.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

It would be better if it worked
It's insane how expensive trains are, I'm not sure nationalising them would solve that but the insane price coupled with the retarded way they are run and managed makes me mega cross. The private sector has proven its self incapable of making the trains, efficient, run on time, well priced and reliable. The national rail network I'm told wasn't much better (bit before my time), so I don't know what the solution is, either way the customer or the general public gets ****ed.

Yes. Just look at the Netherlands. Or Russia. Good heaven, even the Oppressive Dictatorship ****hole has trains that are always on time for 3-10 times cheaper than in the UK. And you don't have to open the door pushing the handle outside the train! And come think of it -- they use electricity!

On the other hand, British coaches are privatized, cheap, and work great for me.

  • Missed another sale.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Got into a minor car accident today at school.

Some Mexican guy swiped my car. I can pick at him being Mexican because he was picking up his daughter and he was mad about the whole thing and was speaking Spanish to himself and then called someone while I talked to his daughter.

*****, talk to me, don't make your daughter do it.

I bet he's gonna lie about the situation too.

All these car related woes. My car went missing  last week and is assumed stolen.  No word from the police so it is likely gone for good.

Holy ****, dude.  I can't even imagine...

It was... erm... weird...
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

There are many nice members here I am sure. Im new too but every time someone does something stupid during my breif time here, there are more people who are actually supportive and who try to help protect others from being scammed. A perfecr example would be when bunny and bro discredited the edited img.
