I don't like how high the port sits. I think it'd be better with a daughterboard.
Agreed, but still a very handsome board

Sounds lame, what if we ditch the daughter board and move the port up?

full run ETA, will do a proto run then then a public raffle/fcfs/vickrey sort of thing with like 30-40 units, no more than that likely. I do plan on doing multiple runs - goal is to do smaller but more frequent runs/buys, so drop new colors/etc every few months

Does this mean future GBs will be open to the public?

Having never designed or manufactured myself, what are the main reasons for low-batch runs?  If anybody could manufacture at scale with QC, it would be China, right?  There's clearly more work on your end with say a 500-run batch vs a 100 run batch, but aside from that, are there genuine manufacturing concerns with quality?  Upfront manufacturing deposits?  I'm starting to get the design itch....

so manufacturing isnt the problem. it's how much time i am willing to take out of my day (free time otherwise, usually, or time i spend designing stuff like this for myself and others) to QC, ship, deal with issues, etc.

it's easier and gives me more peace of mind to not deal with larger scale orders at once, because i like to live my life as well

Trust me. The last thing you want is China QCing these boards. At least not as the sole QCers. And most designers don't make livable profits (or sometimes even profits) off their GBs. It's usually done in their free time and for the hobby.

I think your statement is dumb, for every board the preliminary phase of qc always happens in the factories. So it's important for "china" to qc them.

QC from the factory is usually physical defects etc. with less emphasis on finish or coating issues. you can always pay to have better QC done (which I did with hbcp, and others have done) which is nice, but will drive the overall cost up.

I always wonder, do designers have a go-to keyset in mind when drawing these up?

Yeah this hobby is very keen on perfection, which the factories are not used to as they produce things more for functionality versus aesthetics.

not exactly but i prefer the classic/simple sets so that's probably what i end up designing for subconciously, lol
