GB July 24 - August 24
GB Post

Hi everyone, welcome to the interest check for GMK JAGS.
Change log and thoughts on R5 are in first reply to this thread.

Interest check form: https://forms.gle/8Yya3ZLNDY9y1jPE8

This set uses WS2 for the primary legends. All other colors were selected from the RAL Classic and RAL Design catalogs.

Below are the current iterations of the kits I would like to run. Kits are subject to change based on feedback.

Base:

This kit provides compatibility for 40%, 60%, 65%, 75%, TKL, 1800, and full-size boards.

Previous base kit:
More

Hangul:

The sublegends are meant to be UV printed. I prefer the look of accented sublegends over doubleshot here, but may opt for doubleshot if quotes (assuming this set makes it to that stage) are too expensive.

Extension:

The legends on the windowed keys are UV printed.

Spacebars:

Includes accented bars and Alice bars. The extra B necessary for the Alice layout is also in the kit.

R5:

The R5 kit includes compatibility for 7u bottom rows. Slimmed the kit down by excluding mods for 6.25u bottom rows to keep the price more reasonable.

Collaborations:

RAMA WORKS x GMK JAGS
Both caps are anodized aluminum with enamel infill.

Accent:

Mod:

Keebstuff x GMK JAGS

The plan is to offer a MDPC-X sleeved and a stainless steel sleeved version. LEMO is cerakoted Aztec Teal.
Below is a peek at the MDPC-X version. More pics of the cerakoted LEMO color and other things can be found on Keebstuff's Instagram.

Deskmat:

I don't think the hobby really needs more of these, but if people would really like to see a mat that matches the colors used in the set, I can try to get something done.

Change log:
  • 03/03/2021: Added 3-key 40s support to the base kit.
  • 04/30/2021: Add R5 kit to the proposed kits. Announce vendors.
  • 05/25/2021: Fix mistake in R5 kit render.
  • 07/19/2021: Add collab renders, pricing, and gb date.

R5...
More
Updated the kit to include 1u Supers. The idea of including this kit has grown on me quite a bit. I've wanted to try R5, but didn't want to buy sets that were forcing it in base without offering an alternative.
Will update main post soon.

agreed... consider moving b to base. having no doubleshot keys will lower price of the kit as well.

Modo on steroids. I vibe w it.

B in the spacebar kit isn't a big deal, since you'll need that kit for alice anyways.

I personally have never tried R5 so I did not include it in the initial kitting. Though, I'm not against possibly adding R5 keys into a kit somewhere if enough of the community feels strongly about it.

I also really love r5 so maybe that's not a bad place to stick the row 5 keys?

like the colors, hope this runs.

The key w/ R5 is to separate wanting R5 from wanting it instead of R4 in the base: add r5 to the extension kit for both 1.25u x7 and tsangan and the arrows, the extension kit will be at least 80$ and the sales are gonna hurt. Some will want it for the shine through, some for the macros, some for the R5, and not enough of us trade to make it worthwhile. I like R5 even though it adds cost to a base kit. I'd probably buy anyways w R4. I'm not buying a giant extension kit.

So everyone who wanted R5: you want in the base? you have to outnumber the people who say they won't buy it if R5 is there. Want it in the extension? Gotta be willing to pay 210+ USD before shipping for base and extension.

Ok, let's start...

40s People:
please consider adding the 3 most common 40% keycaps in base (1.75u r2 Backspace, 1.25u r3 Tab, 1.75u r3 Enter)
Obligatory: 40% keyboard support please.

As a non-40s user, the 3 key 40s support in base route has been on my radar for a little while now. It seems like a relatively harmless way to add at least SOME support for 40% users. However, I'm sure people from this part of the community would prefer a dedicated kit that would offer support for a bunch more layouts out there. While I really have no problem with working to put together a dedicated kit, I continue to get hung up on the issue of meeting MOQs. From what I have seen it takes an extremely popular set for the dedicated 40s kit to get enough love. What are people's preferences regarding 3-key support in base vs dedicated kit? Please let me know; I would like to know where your heads are at.

Regarding R5:
Currently, I would prefer to stick with R4 in base, but my initial thought was maybe adding R5 support to the extension kit. However, I feel that kit would then become really beefy and much more expensive than it should be as a result . Alternatively, I can look at a potential dedicated R5 kit? With this too, there is the problem of MOQ. If R5 were to be added somewhere, do people want mod sizes for both 6.25u and 7u bottom rows? Let me know.

Overall:
I'll draft up some kitting revisions to show some possible options for both of these requests. I will say that as a potential first time runner, I am a little bit wary of attempting to run too many kits, but I hope I can bring some options that people can look forward to.

Realistically, GMK prices for child kits are far too expensive. 40s users would have to pay an extra 50% on top of the base kit to get coverage for a board that will use half the keys included in both kits total. The three key system in base works very well as a standard because like, seriously, 90% of smaller boards (and 100% of all the premium 40% boards) get row coverage from just those three keys. It makes a ton of sense to be able to get the whole shebang in one go and be able to swap the set to other layouts without having to be like "aw darn a year ago I should have paid $50 for those two keys I needed".

+1 for adding the 3 40s keys to base, as you said it avoids concern for a child kit that misses MOQ frequently and is a relatively harmless addition. Those 3 keys would maximize the amount of weirdos who could get by with base and space bars while keeping additions to a minimum. Obviously it can get out of hand quickly if you try and cover every layout but those 3 will cover a vast majority of boards in the wild.

Well, R5 is more expensive than R4. So I think it's better to add more keys to cover more layouts rather than change to R5 and then you'll need to trim down the base to reduce the price.

Thanks for at least considering it. If R5 were added somewhere (I'd vote for a separate kit), I'd personally only be interested in a full winkeyless bottom row. After thinking about it more, I think lack of R5 would be enough to stop me buying the set, as much as I'm fond of it.

3 key 40s support is really the way to go.  Generally, you can expect ≈10% attach rates with GMK 40s kits. As such, I wouldn’t put the effort into kitting, rendering, and quoting a full 40s kit unless you expect to easily clear 1000 base sets.
