Author Topic: Where can I buy LEDs for MX Switch/Poker? (Read 5228 times)

I've searched every term I can think of and I can't find what I'm looking for...

I need red, white, and blue LED's for my Poker II. I have no idea what size/voltage/etc to buy, or where to buy them. I need like, 'the idiots link to LEDs'. Any help is appreciated!

You can buy them on eBay. Most people have been suggesting the 2x3x4mm flat LEDs lately. The voltage thing might be a bit more difficult. I'll let someone else answer that for you...

Hmm, wonder if there is a good place where I can pick them up in lower quantities...don't wanna spend $20 for 300 extra LEDs i'll never use.

Not sure how I feel about the flat/rectangular ones, seeing as how the fittings on the switches are round...but if that's what everyone is recommending there must be a reason for it.

I'm pretty sure that LED profile is best for keycap clearance. I still need to get some of these myself, in green.

The problem with the round ones is some keycaps hit them and the solution is to slightly file on the LEDs.

Alright, anyone else use these themselves? Just looking for confirmation.

Other than that, are there any GOOD (read: correct) videos out there showing how to solder on the typical PCB? I 'know' how, but a visual would help. This is gonna be a fun project!

Alright, so I've ordered the LEDs... I'm curious about how to remove the solder thats already on the board. I don't have one of those special vacuum tools. Is it possible to use the solder thats already there to solder the LEDs in?

No, unless you can heat both holes at the same time, and then you would still need some solder, because there is a high possibility that the existing solder won't create a good connection.
I use a solder sucker that I bought for €2 and it has so far desoldered more than 450 swithces including LEDs or diodes. You would need one of those at a minimum. Some say that you can use solder wick, but it really is a pain to use and not even worth buying for these kind of projects.
