I found this thread helpful when doing SMD soldering for my ErgoDox. :thumb:

Cool, thats nice to hear.  I have learned a lot in this process.  This second (bigger) board took me about 1/2 as much time as the first one took to get all the SMD stuff soldered on.

I'm interested in a 75% SpiRiT, however, I'm a bit confused to as how everything fits together.

There are 3 pieces that make up the case, and 1 piece that makes the plate. Does this mean that the plate is optional, and only necessary if I wanted to plate mount, instead of PCB mount the switches?

May seem like a dumb question, but I'm just trying to visualize how this will look in the end.

Thanks.

Mmm... machined aluminum

Unfortunately I am not going to be any help on this. I did not buu any of his cases since I am prototyping and building my own case design. Sorry.

"My keyboards bring all the geeks to the yard,
And they're like

Damn right it's better than yours,
I can teach you,
But I have to charge"...  :P

Switches are finally together.  Just I just have to solder it all up and build a case...

I just read your tip on inserting the sip sockets using tweezers.

Did you by chance try using a LED?

I found it quiet easy to attach both sockets to an led and slip it in, then used a small flathead screwdriver 2.4mm I think it was, inbetween then led wires to dislodge them inside the switch.

That process sounds long to me. The sockets will move around a bit after you insert them anyway, so I am not sure if there is an advantage to that. How did it work out for you?

Didn't really take long, was a smooth process for me, I found it more annoying to put my snipped led's in after I closed the switches in preparation for soldering.

Each time you place them in, you place both sockets, so for me I think it saved time for any other alternatives.

I don't own any small tweezers that would work for me, so mothing to compare to.

Ya. I needed to find something that would help me place them because they are small and annoying to work with. These tweezers worked will, but they are just what I had in front of me.

It's all about finding solutions with what you have on hand. :). Good job.

How did you use that battery as a led tester? I got a 2032 3v flat battery and cant get my leds to light up.

If it's a high Vf LED (blue or white are usually over 3V) the battery might not have enough voltage to deliver current to the LED sufficient to light it to visible brightness.

Make sure you are using it the correct way. It will work one way0 and if you rotate it, it won't work (due to the polarity of the led).

I have tested white, blue, etc, and they all light up fine with 3V.

Could have sworn I tried both ways. Of course it started working with your tips. :)

I do enjoy the "simple case" design.

If it's any help, I got mine from eBay (this listing, I believe) and they worked quite well.

I bought mine from here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3PCS-Strip-Tin-PCB-Female-IC-Breakable-40pin-Single-Row-Round-Header-Socket-/200924888625?ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:CA:3160

They took about a month to arrive though.  If you are in the US, I think dorkvader's link is probably better.  If a couple dollars is worth waiting a month for, then go ahead and get them from where I got mine.  I bought a ton of them (basically enough to do like 6 keyboards) and I knew that the components for my builds where about a month or two off when I ordered, so I was not worried about the shipping delay.

Hello,

I am interested in building this as well.

Would you be able to list your BOM for this? I am thinking that I only need to order the PCB and switches for this, am I close?

Thank you,

Jaime

Sorry for digging up this topic, but since more and more people are getting their stuff from sprit...
Thanks for the amazing build log, the tweezers and diode tip is so great, was really intimidated by the size of the diodes but thanks to this guide it was pretty straight forward :)

No worries.  :)  I actually have a new Sprit 75% board to solder up, so I will probably be adding a third entry here soon.  Ya, of everything I learned, that is by far the most useful.  I doubt I will have any new tips on my third board, but I will try to add it anyway.  Glad it was helpful.  :)
