A lot of people have offered to not get a refund, which is amazing.

i havent gotten my invoice yet (i know it will come, dont feel rushed!) but i suggest putting both prices in there, so people can decide :D i would not want you to lose money and i surely will consider paying the normal price too :)

I will have everyone pay 100% now and refund when the GB is over.

Sounds good to me. :) Only issue I see is around whether or not the case that everyone will end up using can fit in the RGB LEDs (mine can!). :)

Do you have a list or something of those who can or cannot support the RGB LEDs?

@LeandreN: Alright then :thumb:

if all fails i would think desoldering an SMD should be way easier then soldering them on :D (if one wants to do that)

Just pick up a dremel, check out Youtube on how to operate it, and fix your case so that there's plenty of clearance :)

I would prefer not to have the RGB parts, lest they cause clearance issues in my case (aluminum case so modding it would be a little more difficult). The case is opaque anyway so the RGB lighting would never be seen.

However, if I am in the minority and adding RGB parts to every PCB is easier, then that's fine with me.

Do you have a list or something of those who can or cannot support the RGB LEDs?

Based on my research for my B.face build:

  • Anything Tex would have to be modified
  • Stock pok3r cases may also need modding?
  • Basically anything with the horizontal stiffener ridges would need modification
  • I've been told that this case will work (at least I hope so, since thats what i bought)
  • Cases from Ziptyze (the 3d printed ones) should not need modding
  • Winkeyless acrylic cases would obviously not need modifications

Bought the Lambo for the B.face too. Should be coming in today. Also got an acrylic case from TB that has those ridges. It's not a Tex case, but we'll see if it needs modification.

If I don't have a Dremel, is there any other way to modify the case without hassle?

I've ordered a Tier 3 PCB, and just filled in the form to say I will continue to pay the Tier 3 price.
Thanks for the awesome groupbuy
My question is, i'm in the other group buy to get the carbon fibre case I mentioned earlier, and now I'm getting worried that the LED's might not fit.
How easy will it be to remove the LED's if necessary?
You mentioned you could do the soldering of the switches for a fee, but I guess that would require you to have the plate. Is that right?

Sorry building this keyboard is all new to me.

The RGB LEDs are under, and i am 99% sure they will fit. They are pretty easy to remove with a soldering iron and a tweezer. I can solder the switches for you, but then i need the plate...

I plan on putting this in an aluminum TEX case, would the RGB soldering etc. get in the way of mounting the PCB inside? If so, then I'll respond to leave mine tier 2. Otherwise, free upgrade is free!

Just sent the payment to Winkeyless. They are starting the production now.

Still 15 unpaid invoices. I would like to see these paid by the weeks end so I can order the plates :)

Gaterons are also ordered, but not paid.

Thanks! It is decided. This is the best way.

Now please fill out this.
I'm still a little confused. As I am going to use a TEX aluminium case, am I still able to have a PCB without the RGB soldering if I select Tier 2 on this survey?

The tier 2 choice on the survey does not guarantee you a tier 2 PCB. It is only a few tier 2s available. I am sorry. You can refund the order, or keep the tier 3 and sell it(recommended).

Fill out the form either way.

Desoldering should be okay with a tweezer and soldering iron, however I am sure some people will trade a RGB board for a non RGB board on mechmarket :)

There's no particular instruction to follow, just some advices.

Use a small tip, the smaller the better.
Desolder one end at time.
Hold the component with the tweezers and either pull it up or twist it a bit while desoldering. It will come off the PCB.
If you are careful, you can desolder without damaging the components themselves.

Get it without the RGB. It took some very serious modification to get my B.face + RGB in a TEX case.

Update

I have got a lot of payments, still about 10 remaining for Paypal and a couple SEPA/bank transfers i haven't invoiced.

Why did you remove the tier 2 PCB?

The PCB orders suprised me, a lot more RGB boards than anticipated. Winkeyless is going to factory solder all the PCBs. To reduce time, and cost for them, and me, they asked me to remove the tier 2 options and give them tier 3 for free.

2 problems:

1.RGB parts doesn't fit some cases, like the TEX acrylic one. It requires modificaton of the case. It is because of the ridges inside the case.

2. Tier 3 PCB buyers are paying more for the same product as the tier 2 buyers.

Solutions fot tier 2 users
1. They will still send me 10 tier 2 PCBs. Those will go to the people that filled the form and REALLY couldn't settle with the tier 3 PCB. I had to really beg them for this, i really appericate Winkeyless' work!
2. Trade the PCB on classifieds or /r/mechmarket. I am sure some people will trade their non-RGB boards for a RGB one.
3. Refund the PCB (not ideal for me, but i want people to be satisfied)

Solutions fot tier 3 users
1. Keep the tier 3 as it is
2. Refund 19$ to match the tier 2 price (not ideal for me, but i want people to be satisfied)

The GB will hopefully ship faster, and will reduce the massive cost of these PCBs for me.

Thanks for your consideration!

It's not a Tex, but I ordered this one off TaoBao and my B.face fits nicely in it. Not sure whether other RGB boards have the LED strips in the same spots.
http://world.taobao.com/item/45583909127.htm?fromSite=main&spm=2014.21146508.0.0

There are ridges, and they do seem to align with the RGB strips, but I can't tell if they touch because of the height of the screw holes and the angle of the board. Some of the ridges have notches in them as if to accommodate RGB LEDs, but in other areas they don't. If they do touch, they must not touch very much because I'm still to work the LEDs without issue and they don't seem to be bothered by the ridges.
It's not the world's sturdiest case, but it does the job and, for less than $10, I just threw it with the rest of my TB proxy order.

Get it without the RGB. It took some very serious modification to get my B.face + RGB in a TEX case.

Just as another data point, You will be more likely to:
  • have or know someone who has a dremel tool to grind down the case ridges
than to have:
  • The proper skills to desolder the RGB LEDs with a soldering pencil
  • A soldering tweezers

Desoldering the LEDs with a regular soldering pencil will be difficult because the LEDs have 2 pins on each side which have to be heated at as close to the same time as possible so you don't lift pads/traces off the PCB or burn the PCB while trying to heat the opposite side of the LED through the LED itself.

Pictures of the LEDs for reference:
More

Given the choice between disfiguring the inside of the case (which won't be visible when the keyboard is assembled) or potentially damaging the PCB (and rendering it unusable), I'd definitely choose modding the case.  That way you will also still have the RGBs available should you ever want an acrylic case instead.

thanks dudes.

I actually have a TEX case here awaiting the pcb, so I think I'm gonna try and just mod the case. tbh though I am surprised to see the size of the RGB components, as that don't look too large, so it must be a close fit even without them.

EDIT I guess those horizontal supports are literally meant to hold up the pcb between the rows of switches, which would indeed make it a tight fit

does anyone have images of the TEX case modified to fit the RGB strips of the pcb?

Nmur, my boards at home but remind me in a few hours ill take some pics.

You also have to think about the lines shorting out your board, it took 2 layers of electrical tape for mine to stop.

I was looking at pictures of the Tex Acrylic currently on MassDrop and it looks like some of the ridges have been reduced to accomodate backlit PCBs? I have to check to see if my current case (an older Tex Acrylic) has this same type of layout... it might work without modification.

For the folks who are on the fence with cases. Ziptyze cases are really solid for 3d printing, he is super flexible, and as described above, they fit without any mods. In addition if you are buying a steel plate with this drop, this alone will add weight and rigidity to the board overall if you are worried about that type of thing.
