Exxon Valdez leaks 240,000 of oil after running aground of the coast of Alaska.
Rain Man wins best picture at the Oscars. In hockey, Clint Malarchuk almost dies after he takes a skate to the neck, and Ron Hextall becomes the first goaltender in NHL history to score a goal in the playoffs.
The Hillsborough disaster claims the lives of 96 Liverpool supporters, and students start their infamous protest in Tiananmen Square. Construction of the first McDonalds in the Soviet Union starts in Moscow. Bush orders 1,900 US troops to Panama, and the wreck of the
Bismark is discovered. The Germans took over SW19, with Boris Becker and Steffi Graf winning the singles titles at Wimbledon. The incredible B2 Spirit bomber makes it's first flight, and Nintendo releases the first Game Boy.
The first country to legalise civil partnerships between same sex couples, is Denmark, which passed a law in October of this year. The communist government of East Germany resigns, and the Berlin Wall falls.
