Can we have a discussion about the word 'keeb'?
« on: Thu, 25 May 2017, 11:45:37 »
I have to admit upfront...I personally really do not like the word 'keeb', further herein referred to as 'the other word'.

I almost overlooked it when it was just a couple UK guys saying it, I mean I get it we all have our own dialect and I thought that must just be what they called keyboards. (examples http://www.hintsandthings.co.uk/library/words2.htm)

I would even understand if it was a regional thing like soda, pop, or coke; however this seems to go deeper than that.

Apparently from the brief history I was able to gleam 'the other word' first became a thing on r/mechanicalkeyboards and has since migrated here.

And I'm going to go ahead and assume some hipster podcast or video series that I know nothing about used the word as well to further its distribution.

I guess I just don't get it....if we like keyboards and we like keycaps we should naturally like typing...wouldn't we want to type out keyboard every time instead of 'the other word'?

So I'm curious do you have an opinion on 'the other word'?

Can you help me understand why anyone would not just say or type keyboard?

AND most importantly do you actually say 'the other word', like out loud, in conversation about your beloved keyboard....do you really call it 'the other word'?

I don't find this word annoying but english is not my native language. However I can sympathize as I'm equally frustrated by deliberate butchering of some words by my fellow native speakers. The one that makes me cringe is referring to horsepower (konie mechaniczne in polish) as kuce (english translation is ponies) by c00000l duuuudes.

I tend to write how I speak, and oddly I've said keeb in real life. They didn't understand what I meant, but I liked how it sounded and will continue to use it.
Additionally, I use it when talking about "keyboard" or "keyboard-related stuff."

By calling it "the word keeb", you are in effect legitimizing it.

Personally, I never really noticed it before. People use stupid slang all the time that they have come up with and then it goes away. Only a tiny portion of it sticks. By talking about it as a word, you spread the use of it ... you help give it critical mass ...

It's "stab" that gets on my nerves. "Stab" is already a word that means something very different, and in this context it just sounds ludicrous.

I detest abbreviations and diminutives in general, although I use "board" in a keyboard forum without fear that it will be misinterpreted. I believe that precision and consistency in language is vital to good communication, and "insider slang" and clannishness are particularly irritating to people outside the bubble.

On a similar theme, personal pronouns are absurdly overused these days, and that leads to enormous confusion.

"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

I have to admit that it took me a long time to get used to "stab" also. I had to relearn what it means two or three times because it's really jarring and not intuitive since it's already word.

I detest abbreviations and diminutives in general …

I never cared for "board" either, but it's not as bad as "stab". I guess I'm getting used to "app" too, which wasn't easy. "gf" is one I've never cared for — something about caring about a person but being too lazy to type more than two letters. In general, there's just something odd about keyboard enthusiasts who use abbreviations, like typing on their beloved and astoundingly overpriced keyboards is too tedious!

At least "apps for applications (and "progs" for programs) predates the current meaning, which I think is "some insidious system designed to relieve you of your money and information without you noticing"

"App" was simply in common use at Apple for desktops so it was natural for them to use for smartphones as well. But nowadays people tend to use "app" stands for smartphone app first, which is bonkers.

Don't care at all which word anyone uses as long as it's clear what they're talking about... I mainly use board or MKB, but have used keeb once or twice.

My main concern though is content from the link OP posted: Do you guys across the pond really say Movie-House? (I know movie-theater is more commonly used, but movie-house? Nothing wrong with it, but I chuckled.) ;)

On a similar theme, personal pronouns are absurdly overused these days, and that leads to enormous confusion.

I detest abbreviations overload too but I browse the forum when I procrastinate from m assignments so I tend to use "mkb, "board," and "mech" for "mechanical keyboard" because they give me the illusion of saving time. (I wish.)

I don't use and don't like "keeb" because I figured it's supposed to sound like "keyboard" (???) but I don't hear the kinship between the two words so I refrain from using it. Maybe it's a non-native speaker thing, I don't know, I'll leave the native speakers to it.

About personal pronouns, I don't know if you're referring to my writing, I don't remember discussing anything with out but it's possible, so I'll just say that personal pronouns must be overused in academic writing so I sometimes forget where I'm writing and tend to go all academic style on the Internet.
I know it's repetitive and maybe annoying after a few lines but I can't go from full academy to full "yo fam" style very easily. If you weren't referring to my writing style, feel free to ignore this.

Personally don't like the term, but I think it should have been spelled keyb. Also I thought keeb was supposed to be used to describe a keyboard user, not be short for the word keyboard. We already have board for that..

Yeah, I remember when using a Mac over ten years ago and rarely hearing the word "app." I thought it was their lazy way of saying applications and thought it dumb.

It doesn't bother me if people write or say "keeb". Same goes for lul, app, l33t, rekt, etc.. Once l33t worked its way into usernames though, I lost my shiz. Total life changing table flip moment... Yea no, I still don't care about random abbreviations. Go nuts. Get rekt.

I love the word "keeb". Its use instantly tells me something about it's user.  >:D

That they know the difference between "its" and "it's." >:D

Fair enough. Apostrophes have always been my nemesis. I know the rules of possessives and contractions, but still screw them up. Laziness I guess. Hey, do I get at least half credit?

You get 62.1% in my book.

Keeb was created by slang noobs.
How about something more creative like a swink (switch plank) or conar (contact array) or, or an ybo (pronounced eeboe and guess where I got that from).

We kind of have an equivalent in Danish that people sometimes overuse during conversations. It's not enough to drive me bonkers but some people almost don't say anything else and that does get annoying.

Picked that awful habit from American roommates. I still cringe every time I think a sentence with any like it and try to stall and work my way around that if I can.

Ok, since we're venting all words and not only concentrating on keebs, I wanna address how much it annoys me how some pronounce the letter H. It's a soft letter, I don't know where people got the idea to emphasise the H like Stewie saying cool whip.

ok, point taken. but as the article mentions, it started to merge in the 13th century and by the 18th it was fully accepted / merged in educated speech too... sooo, the fact that we're using keyboards as an interface to directly communicate with each other indicates to me, that we're at least in the 20th century. My point still stands...

I have never used that word and this is the first time I have seen mention of it. I frequent keyboard stuff a lot too, maybe I am not as addicted as others or have been spared of such word usage? I wouldn't use it myself don't like how it sounds but that's just me.

Here's a novel idea: we're typists. We ostensibly enjoy typing. "Keyboard" shouldn't take meaningfully longer for us to type. Even in speech, it's one thing to use exclusive jargon when you're getting deeper in. Putting it right up front, referring to the very name of our hobby's object with a made-up in word is idiotic. Particularly a made-up word as stupid as "keeb."

Unfortunately it has already spread like wildfire. Subreddits dedicated to mechanical boards are full of it and I know at least one online shop named after this term.

I hadn't even heard the K word before now.

So no, I never use it.  And won't, now that I am aware of it.

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I don't see what's wrong with simply saying "board."  "Keeb" is weird.

Type of topic I'd expect from ander :p

I love the word "keeb". Its use instantly tells me something about it's user.  >:D

That they know the difference between "its" and "it's." >:D

LOL, I didn't realize people were talking about me or I would've gotten here sooner.

Yeah, I point out stuff like that now and then. It just seems ironic to me when someone on a keeb forum indicates that they haven't quite learned how to, you know, use a keeb. ("Right, what's this key with the little 'tick' mark for again?")

Keeb needs to be replaced by Koob

My wife had a dog named Koug.

Keeb was created by slang noobs...

Who created "noob" then? More experienced slang peeps? Slang peeps who weren't noobs?

Show Image

I'd be in a bad mood too if I had a big ol' watermark on my face.

Actually I hate overuse of the word "like" more than I hate the word "keeb", come to think of it.

Yeesh, tell me about it... My son finally stopped doing that in his first year at university. (I doubt it was spontaneous.)

According to Urban Dictionary keeb and keebs already have several meanings.

That's generally true. However, peeps in the keeb keyboard world are famous for obsessing hyper-focusing on detail—so it may not be realistic to try to limit the things they agonize over ruminate on like this.

Besides, you'll notice that this topic's title is "Can we have a discussion about the word 'keeb'?" So this isn't necessarily a discussion of it. Such a thing may still be in the theoretical stage.

Actually I hate overuse of the word "like" more than I hate the word "keeb", come to think of it.

That was a huge pet peeve of mine in the very early 2000's. People still do that?
It's gotten MUCH worse since then! I regularly clock people saying it three times in the same sentence.

Oh yes, this gets me too.  I hear it every day, 3 times or more in the same sentence (I'm in NYC).  What gets me worse is that I occasionally insert a "like" where it doesn't belong.  I catch it immediately and silently chastise myself.  You kind of adopt the language around you.  I guarantee if anybody lived in Alabama or North Carolina for a few years they would begin to say "yall."

Did we stop discussing this, the "keeb" thing? I was just wondering what the verdict was.

Personally, I'm still saying "keeb", but I'm willing to b swayed by public opinion. However, one way or another, the "keeb" issue should be resolved.

Keeb.

I like my mechy-keebs

.. but really though, how often do you have to explain that "no... not piano keyboard, typing keyboards" to people.

So "keeb" was created to differentiate computer keyboards from pianos? That does seem like an important distinction. You wouldn't want to tell someone, "Hand me that keyboard, will you?" and end up having a piano dropped on you. It seems like we should err on the side of caution and maintain this vital, potentially life-saving term.

BTW, did you notice how I typed "I'm willing to b swayed by public opinion" above? I wasn't being trendy with the "b"; I just neglected to type the "e" after it. Doesn't it look cool though? I'm going to learn some of those hip-hop hand signals next, so I can show everyone how independent I am by being just like a bunch of other people.
