The user is pre-committing himself to the yet-to-be announced second round (R2) of the Fjell case, which he plans to use for his AEK64 custom keyboard build.

The user registered to the Geekhack forum for the sole purpose of keeping up to date with any new Fjell news, in the hopes of not missing the announcement of a second round.

Damn, you must be having a really great morning, lol

But seriously, how will you build an AEK64 (which is a case) with a Fjell (which is also a case)?

Oh, that kinda makes sense, who would have thought that there are many different things that are named the same, I was thinking about this case with integrated plate:

Will the Pro be more expensive?

tray vs top-mount:  Top-mount is superior in every way - right?

He meant Alps64 PCB, not AEK64 the stainless steel case

Ah, I see what he meant (kinda), and I kinda expected this.

AEK64 is a layout. It's a 60% board based on the old Apple AEK boards, but in a 60% size. Most of the time using Hasu's Alps64 PCB, and whatever case you want (Fjell, for example).

Someone recently ran a closed group buy of a 60% case, called the AEK64, which I think is where the confusion came from - I've seen this a few times already, actually - after seeing that new steel case, because the case is named after a layout that already existed..

ETA: that is to say, one could build a an 'AEK64' keyboard, with or without the new 'AEK64' steel case, and it would still be an AEK64 keyboard. If that makes sense Kawasaki?

It's pretty certain the Pro will be more expensive.

Whether it's superior depends on the traits you view as more important.

Top-mounted cases tend to feel more solid since the plate is attached to the case. Though if it is improperly designed it can also have pinging issues when the plate transfers the keystroke to the case. They are also capable of coming in the HHKB layout with Universal PCB's (GH60). They also tend to be more expensive since the multiple parts makes it more complicated to produce.

Tray-mounted cases offer a different feel since the PCB is attached to the case instead of the plate. IMO this gives the keyboard a softer feel. This completely avoids the pinging issue that improperly designed Top-mounted cases can have. Tray-mounted cases can also be easily swapped because they use universal plates. While Top-mounted cases use plates that are specific to them. They also tend to be cheaper because they can be made in one piece.

One isn't better than the other. There is only the one that best fits what you want out of a keyboard.

Yeah he said somewhere the pro would be more than the Classic case.

Just picked up a purple Klippe! It was hard to choose between purple or black, but I have a black Fjell. Does anyone know approximately when the Fjell R2 and Fjell Pro buys will be? If they're going to be simultaneous I want to make sure I'm prepared...

From what I've seen, he said they'll be available on 1up first, with more retailers and/or group buys possible in the future.
