Hi guys, just wanted to share this personal project of mine that has kept me busy for weeks. So it all started when I did the first "KIRA" renders, a 96-key as some people might know. I liked the idea of a full size keyboard in a compact layout, so the 96 seemed like the perfect layout for me. I bough a b.mini EX X2 which is similar, and then a ZZ96 and I was happy, at first anyway. Then I realized that I had a hard time finding the arrow keys because there's no spacing between the alphas and arrow keys. That led me to trying out the 1800, which while great since it's kinda shorter, still takes up a lot of space. I am currently using a TX-1800 at home, it's a great keyboard but I still want to try what is basically a compact 1800 like the LZCP and the TXCP. Which led me to my first custom.

So here it is, the first prototype of what is basically a 96-key layout grouped into alphas, arrows and numpad. Big thanks to riotonthebay and Input Club's Brandon for all the advice and help they provided, It would've taken me too long to do this without their awesome help. I would also like to thank forevermadrigal, geckt, rainb1ood, gatix, krytone and livingspeedbump for being so supportive of my designs. I don't expect a lot of people to like it, but your enthusiasm with what I do already makes it worth it.  :thumb:

I call it the KIRA EX.

PHOTOS:

Old Photos

So, the next steps. I'm trying to find someone who can design the PCB for me. I've already talked to Leeku and a friend, and I just need to decide how to go about it. I only just checked the spacing with GMK 9009 and I'm happy to know that my CAD and measurements weren't an epic failure. I've already updated the design too, to reduce the gap of the bezel from the caps, reduce the top bezel width, and add some polish to the corners and edges. I've also designed a weight insert since the bottom of the first prototype was really bare (did it to reduce the cost in case it was a **** up).

Thanks for reading, and I'll be updating this as the project develops  :thumb:

Also, the title is "KIRA keyboards" because I have other layouts planned, and this GH60 case is probably next:

The KIRA60 FE

Things To Do as of 20170722:

  • find a PCB guy
  • acquire funds for second kit (lol)
  • maybe search for some manufacturer options

Changes made [CAD changes for now]:

  • reduced gap between bezel and caps
  • reduced top bezel
  • thicker inserts
  • added some chamfers and fillets to some corners and edges
  • designed a weight insert

Thanks Bunny!

Also I forgot to mention, the inserts are supposed to be either metal or acrylic, but I just tried to screw them together. In the new design I have it thicker, but realized doing two-tone inserts might be great for accent. :D

The point of a compacted F-row here I think in my point of view is the overall decrease in the size of the keyboard.

Edit: this is purely my own views, I do not affect any of the preference made by the designer for the kira 96.

Thanks! I already have a TX-1800 and a ZZ96 so I'll be trying something of a hybrid. When I have the PCB made and actually used it for a several weeks, I will know if the layout is good for me. :)

Here are images of the current progress:

Weight cutout

Weight cutout

Weight insert

The current weight design will add another 1 Kg to the case if brass is used, compared to Aluminum.

0.497 Kg for Aluminum weight
1.546 Kg for Brass weight
1.454 Kg for Steel weight

Sorta like a TX-CP, but different enough due to the F row without gaps.  With reduces bezels (especiallyat the top) you have yourself a winner.  I was looking forward to the KIRA 96key but I already have a board in that layout, but no compact 1800 style board so I'd probably be in!

I'm glad you like it! I used to scoff at big bezels, but after a while I started thinking thin bezels look so generic when looking straight down on it (IMO). Maybe it's because I'm currently using a TX-1800, but I don't think it will look as good with thin bezels. Anyway, I reduced the top bezel by 4mm, and I think it fits the necessary bottom bezel (because of the arrow keys offset).

New photos uploaded! My friend finally had the time to take tons of photos, unfortunately he hasn't seen a numpad for years and I was busy ordering pizza and gaming on my phone so... there's a little mistake in the layout.  :p

Still have to find a suitable PCB for the compact 1800, but here's my other design for a 60%, The KIRA60 FE. These photos were taken from the factory, and hopefully I will receive the board tomorrow or the next day.

Excited to see this board in person, hopefully all my measurements are correct (again)  ;D

Not really planning to offer a 60% PCB, which is why I shifted my focus to this for now, since the PCB and the plate can be acquired just about anywhere.

Just curious, what will become of the "original" KIRA?  Are there any plans to develop that?

Input Club is developing it at the moment, and most of the legwork will come from them. I still have some ideas so I'm just making things I want.

Nice.  I thought I'd heard that but I couldn't remember and didn't want to assume anything.

Are they developing it in conjunction with MD? Or is this going to be completely I:C?

Side question here...

Is there a way to setup an RSS so that you never miss when group buys go live? I would love to get into RSS feeds but I don't know how.
